Abstract
Existing acid mine drainage treatment techniques are not remedial In nature, i.e. though heavy metals can be removed from acid mine water, their presence in tailings and large quantities of these tailings tend to increase capital and operating cost for tailing management. This paper presents the results of a series of systematic tests which finally resulted In the development of the "ferrite" process for mine drainage of coal operations at ambient temperature. The role of pH, temperature, quantity of ferrous salt addition and degree of oxidation is investigated targeting the production of high emu spinel ferrites and effluent water complying regulatory standards with respect to Iron. manganese suspended solids and pH.
