Abstract

The law [ ] where [ ] is a measurable quantity such as strain and A and cu are empirical constants, describes the behavior of materials in terminal stages of failure under conditions of approximately constant stress and temperature. Applicable to intact rock and rock masses, the relation may be extended to conditions of variable stress and cyclic stress, and may be used to predict time to failure. Applications in rock mechanics include slope and excavation stability and various topics in ground control.
