Abstract

Many volcanoes in western Melanesia have tectonic settings and rock compositions that do not conform to conventional models of arc- trench systems. Part of the reason for this may be that in an environment of rapid tectonic change mantle source regions bear the imprint of former subduction even though subduction has now ceased.
