Abstract

An overview of the first Swedish Research mine at Mt Luossavaara, Kiruna, Sweden, is given, including its background, objective , program and expected results. The Research mine involves the spending of approximately US$ 32 Million over a five year period of which 30% are financed by the Swedish Government and remaining 70% by income from ore sales. The main objective will be to develop an underground mining system based on rock mechanical pre-investigations and blast hole stoping using big holes. The research program will include the following main components:
