Abstract
The future environment of our planet, with the concept of sustainable development, has moved to centre stage of all future plans for development. This global view is new. It presents great opportunities and challenges for the Earth Sciences. We have the tools to describe our environment on all scales - planetary to molecular levels. We must respond to this great demand by world society.
