Abstract
Magnesite is of importance primarily as a refractory material for lining
steel furnaces , although substantial amounts are used in the production of
flooring compositions and other building materials and for certain chemicals ,
notably epsom salts . Since consumption for all of these purposes is largely in
the eastern United States and domestic deposits are situated in California and
Washington , this country's magnesite mining industry , which was created largely
by war- time conditions , has subsequently been sustained by tariff protection .
