Abstract
The investigation of the causes, behavior, and control of anthracite mine fires, which the Bureau of Mines has been carrying on has yielded several publications directly applicable to mine-fire problems. 3/, 4/, 5/, 6/, 7/, 8/ As a further step in elucidating the causes of heating in certain anthracites subjected to oxidation, reliable information vial needed relative to the actual amount of heat that is liberated when a unit volume of oxygen combines with anthracite at varying temperatures.
