Stone , the foundation of the continents and the floor of the oceans , is one of the most substantial and enduring of all substances that constitute the material universe . Stone furnished rude shelter for aboriginal man , and through all succeeding ages it has provided a lasting and serviceable structural material . Limestone is one of the most widely used building stones .
