Abstract
Tamano Smelter of Hibi Kyodo Smelting Co., Ltd. has been operating with one Flash Furnace (FSFE) and three Peirce-Smith Converters since its start-up in 1972. Anode production capacity has increased from 101,000 to 263,000 t/y by the several expansion programs, while converter capacity has increased and stable operation has been established by several improvements as listed below.  - Expanding the furnace body (length)  - Development of two kinds of automatic scrap charging system for each converter.  (Increasing the in-stack time and better control of the melt temperature)  - Oxygen enrichment at slag blow and copper blow  - Increasing the blowing rate  This paper reports the details of these improvements.
