Abstract

"This paper describes how material selection, quality assurance, and failure investigation play important roles in the efficiency and safety of mining and metallurgical operations.INTRODUCTION Material selection, quality assurance, and failure investigation are all complementary elements of materials engineering in the application of materials technology for failure prevention. Based on commodity price increase of 300% between 2002 to 2013 [1] and increased cost ofcapital projects and operation, equipment failure, which in some cases causes complete shutdown of the operation, becomes a vital importance in mining and metallurgical plants. The following sections present a number of examples from many failure cases experienced by the author during his three decades of work as a materials engineer in the mining industry."
