Abstract

The effectiveness of the new DuPont Passivation Technology in eliminating acid generation from iron sulfides is presented. Passivation is achieved by treatment with a dilute basic permanganate solution. This treatment produces a thin impervious layer of iron/manganese oxide on the sulfide surface, providing a barrier to the environment so that the sulfide is not available for undesirable reactions such as the production of acid.
