Abstract
THE anthracite region, from which there is produced annually about 80,000,000 tons, or approximately 15 per cent. of the total coal supply of the United States, has a combined area of a little less than 500 sq. mi. The total area occupied by the bituminous fields (including the sub-bituminous and lignite fields) is in the neighborhood of 400,000 sq. mi., so that 15 per cent. of the total output comes from this small area of only a little more than 0.1 per cent. of the coal-producing territory. of the United States. The productive anthracite area is divided into a series of basins or troughs, roughly parallel, extending. in a northeast-southwest direction through the. Counties
