Abstract

Experimental study directed toward gaining improved understanding of the exact mechanisms causing ignition in the PTB breakflash. Investigation and comparison of tungsten and copper wires as to their ability to cause hot wire ignition. Evaluation of the importance of discharge duration in the ignition process. Study of the parameters influencing the duration of a discharge (minimum discharge voltage, purity of electrode materials, purity and properties of the gaseous atmosphere contaminations, deposits on the electrode surface).
