Abstract

Advantage has been taken of the need to build the new mining town of Shay Gap to incorporate a new standard of living in an isolated area, which suffers from climatic extremes. The various problems associated with living in the Pilbara area of Western Australia are outlined, together with their effect on the design of Shay Gap.
