Abstract

The key motivation of this study is to evaluate the potential of well-known hazardous gases—carbon dioxide (CO2), hydrogen (H2) and oxygen (O2)—as grinding aids for mineral liberation in ball milling. The results show that exposure of chromite ore particles to CO2 flow will promote chromite liberation at breakage and, therefore, using CO2 as a grinding aid may partially reduce the carbon footprint of the mining industry. For that purpose, the use of two-phase (gas–solid) or three-phase (gas–solid–water) moving-bed mixers are recommended for the pretreatment of mill feed before ball milling.
