Abstract

The construction of shafts by blind drilling has been made cost effective by advances in technology and experience. The techniques of blind shaft drilling are discussed and a brief history presented. A recent use of blind shaft drilling to access a small gold ore body in Australia is described. Finally, the most recent developments in drilling machinery are reviewed together with possible applications in new and existing mines.
