Abstract

THE Appalachian field is notable for four tests drilled in recent years to depths of over 7000 ft. and for one commercial gas well at 6822 ft. The latter is the Ligonier well and produces from the Oriskany FIG. I.-NATURAL GAS PRODUCTION OF PENNSYLVANIA AND WEST VIRGINIA. sandstone. Together with several other comparatively deep tests, these holes were drilled in search of natural gas, to make up for the decline in production of the field. The production curve of Pennsylvania FIG. 2.-EAST WEST SECTION OF APPALACHIAN FIELD. (AFTER ASHLEY AND ROBINSON, PENN. G. S.) and West Virginia from 1907-21 is given in Fig. 1 to illustrate the heavy decline from the peak of 1917. This diminishing supply has also been shown by Moyer,1 on the basis of decreasing rock pressures.
