Abstract
This paper discusses the results of research on the interaction between roof strata and shield supports including the active and passive supporting functions of the shield supports which prevents roof strata separation; pressure distribution on the canopy and under the base plate as measured in the laboratory and underground; comparison between various shield structures regarding their effectiveness on roof and floor control; and determination of optimum support capacity under given geological and mining conditions including hard-tocave roof
