Falls of roof in coal mines and means of preventing them have been subjects of study for many years, and an extensive literature has resulted. Usually each individual paper has placed emphasis on one phase of the subject, such as fatalities, nature and extent of nonfatal injuries, methods of tembering (particularly in rooms or other wide places), safety along retreating rib lines, and methods of causing falls in abandoned areas.
