Abstract
Large tonnages of the magnesium silicate mineral , olivine, are known to
exist in the mountains of western North Carolina and in the Puget Sound region
of Washington. The North Carolina deposits alone are reputed to contain at
least 230 million tons of ore averaging 45 to 49 percent of magnesium oxide In both areas the mineral is readily accessible and can be mined by the simplest
methods ; one of the largest of the Washington deposits is located at
tidewater .
