Abstract
During World War II , a critical shortage of domestic abrasive corundum
developed . Late in 1944 , the shortage became so acute that it was
deemed advisable to investigate certain low-grade corundum prospects in
Madison and Gallatin Counties , Montana . The Gallatin , the Bozeman , and
the Bear Trap deposits were the principal ones investigated . The Bear
Trap deposit was examined by E. W. Newman and Robert S. O'Brien , engineers
of the Bureau of Mines , in August 1944. Exploration was started in
October 1944. Field work was completed late in the spring of 1945 .
