Abstract
This report describes a method for determining the stress in rock based
on a requirement for static equilibrium ; namely , that the total load on a
sufficiently large area must remain constant even after a drift or stope is
mined in the area . The method is based on mathematical relationships that
are independent of the elastic properties of the rock and the stress distribution
near the underground opening . In addition to determining the preexisting
stress (before mining ) , the method described can be used to determine
the change in stress due to mining .
