Abstract
Fourteen coal samples representing the Flag , Fire Clay , Whitesburg ,
Amburgy , Upper Elkhorn No. 3 , Upper Elkhorn No. 2 , Upper Elkhorn No. 1 , and
Lower Elkhorn beds in Letcher County , Ky . , were carbonized by the Bureau of
Mines - American Gas Association ( BM- AGA ) method , and yields of products and
physical properties of cokes were determined .
The samples tested were high- volatile A bituminous in rank , with dry ,
mineral - matter- free fixed - carbon contents ranging from 55.3 to 62.2 percent .
Five of the samples , as received , were chemically unsuitable for metallurgical
use because of excessive ash and/ or sulfur content . Generally , strength
indexes of the cokes were low and all of the coals would require blending with
higher rank coal to obtain satisfactory blast furnace fuel .
