Abstract
Studies were made to determine the effect of the shape of a pneumaticrock-
drill exhaust muffler on its efficiency, and the origin and reduction of
exit noise from the mufflers. Tests of mufflers of three different shapes
proved that the shape is not critical and that a muffler could be incorporated
into the shell of the drill. Petal diffusers are beneficial in reducing exit
noise but add another projection to the machine. Increasing the number of
exit openings while maintaining the same area of exit opening has a markedly
beneficial effect on the exit noise and appears to be the most satisfactory
treatment.
