Abstract
A relatively simple and inexpensive encapsulated hydraulic device has
been developed by the Bureau of Mines to facilitate study of coal bumps , and
to measure pressure changes in a coalbed as it is subjected to roof loading
during mining . Construction of the device and application techniques are
described .
Preliminary feasibility tests in the laboratory and field indicate that
the device responds satisfactorily to pressure changes in coal created by roof
loading .
