Abstract
The Bureau of Mines is investigating pyrometallurgica1 and" chemical methods to recover valuable constituents from metallurgical dusts and slags. Under this program a technique was developed to recover iron from molten copper smelting furnace slags by carbon injection. Slags from gas-fired reverberatory and electric copper smelting furnaces were treated in an 800-kva electric-arc furnace by injecting coke breeze into the bottom of the molten bath. Over 95 pct of the iron and over 90 pct of the copper contained in the smelting furnace slags were recovered, while up to 85 pct of the carbon injected into the system was utilized. It is anticipated that the metal product containing approximately 95 wt-pct iron and 2 wt-pct copper will be a satisfactory medium for recovering copper by cementation.
