In southern Arizona and in Mexico the word caliche is in general use to denote a calcareous formation of considerable thickness and volume found a few inches, or a few feet, beneath the surface-soil, upon the broad, dry, gravelly plains and mesas. , In western South America the same name is applied to the beds of crude soda-niter (Chili saltpeter).
