Abstract
The occurrence of a secondary, dust-fuelled explosion following
blasting of sulphide ores has been reported in mines in many countries,
including canada, the USA, Australia and South Africa. However there has
been little effort to document the events and develop effective control
technology. Following a detailed investigation of an incident at the Geco
Di vision of Noranda Minerals Inc. , the company held a conference of
interested parties in October 1986 to review the state-of-the-art and to
agree on action. '!his paper outlines the causes and effects of such
explosions, the key conference points and conclusions, and subsequent
information-exchange and teclmology-developrnent activities.
