Abstract
Elemental sulphur occurs as aformational sedimentary deposit
in Upper Devonian Wabamun evaporites near Coronation, Alberta.
The deposit developed in a stratigraphic jacies-change
lrap; it is assumed that petroleum reacted with anhydrite to
form sulphur, calcite, hydrogen sulphide and other reaction
products. The deposit contains about 362,800 tonnes of sulphur
and lies at a depth of 1200 m. The Coronation deposit is
expected to be geologically typical of such other native sulphur
deposits as may be found in Wabamun Group sediments. Widespread
sour gas sulphur production f rom the Wabamun suggests
the possibility that additional native sulphur deposits will
·be found.
