Abstract

The solution to the plastic and elastic stresses around a circular shaft in a hydrostatic stress field that has appeared in two editions of a widely used book on rock mechanics1 is in error. Although this is a relatively minor matter, the correct solution was not found by a literature survey, so it appears worthwhile to present it.
