IN view of rather widespread use of calcium as an alloying addition to magnesium alloys, it is rather surprising to find that, although the general features of the Mg-Ca equilibrium diagram are known with a fair degree of certainty,' ," considerable ambiguity concerning the solid solubility of calcium in magnesium exists. By using the disappearing phase technique in a metallographic study, Haughton' found that 0.6 pct Ca was soluble at 300°C and 1.8 pct was soluble at 516°C, the eutectic temperature
