Abstract
The formation, evolution and classification of peat bogs is
discussed. Factors resulting in the internal and external
morphological changes in a bog are described. The fibrous,
absorptive and sterile properties of peat moss account for its
widespread use in horticulture and related fields. These properties
also account for its usefulness as a binder in pelletizing,
as an insulating material in bat tons and in panel construction.
Peat, the humijied product of peat moss is used in market
gardening and sod growing. It is utilized in Europe as fuel. It is
a source of activated carbon and gas. Potentially peat can be
used to produce waxes, resins, tannins, cellulose, hemicellu/
ose, humic acids, lignin and hymatomelanic acid. At present
other cheaper sources are available.
