The paper describes the anticipated and the encountered geology, the TBM selection concepts and the machine special features, the tunnel sections, the achieved advance rates and the geological problems, the machine behaviour and the main setbacks caused by ground conditions the Authors also discuss the scopes for possible improvements to double telescopic shield machines, with special reference to their application under extreme geological conditions such as those that were met in the course of Los Rosales Tunnel excavation.
