Abstract
Gold mineralisation at Wapolu lies within an  exposed arcuate zone at the decollement contact  between a basement dome of high grade  metamorphics and an overlying ophiolite  sequence. This contact was originally a thrust  fault which has since become a decollement zone  for gravity sliding in association with basement  doming. Hydrothermal models for the gold  mineralisation postulate an epithermal system in  which fluids were channelled up the decollement  with boiling of those fluids causing  hydrothermal brecciation and subsequent gold  deposition. The alteration assemblages, fluid  inclusion data and geochemistry indicate that  the upper levels of the system are exposed.
