Abstract

As the US looks within its borders in its drive toward energy independence, economical coal transportation, particularly from vast western reserves, becomes an increasingly difficult but compelling challenge for both the country and the coal industry. Coal producers continue to develop improved technology for more efficient and cost-effective coal mining and processing. But for controlling transportation costs, coal producers must rely on a delicate balance between product demand, competition among carriers, federal regulation, and a symbiotic relationship with coal transporters.
