Abstract

The paper addresses changes in surface transportation methods in the Industrial Minerals business starting with history, the changes to present time including such areas as energy costs, improved highways, changes in regulations and deregulation, and attempts to project future transportation trends. Transportation methods such as rail, piggyback, truck and barge are compared, and their impact on Industrial Minerals producer's costs and profits examined. The customer impact on our businesses due to deregulation is also discussed.
