The cold-rolled steel output of cold-rolling mill (CRM) complexes are sometimes constrained by their batch annealing facilities (BAF). This paper examines a cost-effective solution to increasing capacity and quality of the BAF thereby making additional capacity available for CRM output. The solution involves applying a structured system of scheduling and operation to the BAF, using a proven level-2 software model. The system presented has been applied to a wide variety of BAF with all the leading furnace brands. Whether using traditional HN atmosphere or 100% hydrogen, peak performance can be achieved when using a properly configured, on-line, physical thermodynamic model. Given that it is not practical to place a thermocouple in each coil that is being annealed, various methods have historically been used to estimate the time required to properly anneal all the coils in the charge. This paper examines how the latest technology, in wide use throughout the USA, uses a physical thermodynamic model to shorten average cycle times, thereby increasing productivity and reducing energy consumption. The paper also examines the benefit of building thermodynamically balanced charges to further optimize the BAF operation and improve quality consistency by decreasing mechanical property variations.

The objective of this project was to increase the hot charge by reducing reheating energy consumption and raising the productivity of ArceloMittal Tubarão's hot strip mill by changing the HSM’s schedule process with optimization of the relocation process of slabs after HSM’s chance with focus on slab temperature in reheating time. The project began with the revision of metallurgical rules for the relocation of materials, definition of criteria temperature setting (hot / cold), definition of restrictions of the process and review of modus operandi scheduling process. With the implementation of the process / system it is expected to achieve a 10% increase in the hot charge index in slabs reheating furnaces and increase productivity of the ArcelorMittal Tubarão hot strip mill

Universal joint shafts and slipper spindles are commonly used in rolling mills to compensate the design- and process-related offset between the motors and work rolls. Although both types of shafts exhibit on the same kinematic principle, there are basic differences regarding the design concepts. These differences become noticeable on many levels and may become very distinct in terms of Life-Cycle-Costs (LCC). In this respect, a critical comparison between universal joint shafts and slipper spindles can be made.

With the aim to reduce the hot metal production cost, ArcelorMittal Gent decided to integrate more ores with finer particle size distribution in the raw material mix for the production of blast furnace sinter. As a consequence of such an increase of finer material in the sinter raw mix, the sinter machine productivity and the quality of the sinter are affected. In order to compensate this impact, modern granulation technology can be employed. Within this context, ArcelorMittal Gent has invested in a vertical intensive mixer. The equipment was placed before the existing drums, with a function of “mixer”, whereas the drums are fully optimised for the nodulizing process. The paper presents the results of the industrial operation during the commissioning phase of the new equipment. Gradually increasing the proportion of fine material in the sinter raw mix has made it possible to compare the performances of the old system using drums for mixing and pelletizing with the new system using an intensive mixer combined with a nodulizing.

There is a strong need in North America and other major steel producing markets where major capital investment in new equipment has been minimal over the past several years to make improvements to existing casting machines. In many cases, very cost effective improvements can be made to existing equipment in order to maximize the efficiency and production of an older designed continuous caster, a classic caster. SMS Group and its predecessor companies have been maintaining continuous casting molds for over forty years. This experience has allowed SMS Group to intimately understand the advantages and disadvantages of each design. The most vital component of the continuous caster is the mold copper design, as it has the most influence over the ability to cast a quality product. Updating to a modern copper design is less complicated than most steel producers think and the benefits are significant. Premium mold coatings such as UniGuard® and NanoGuard® allow casters to guard against exposed copper and wear while producing quality products for record campaign lengths.

Conveyor system wear of belts and transfers attribute to a significant proportion of the maintenance costs and lost productive hours when handling hard abrasive ores at high unit rates typical of the iron ore industry. The recent growth phase has seen a rapid increase in mine and export capacity, with many new and upgraded plants operating at high throughput and utilisation. Subsequently, the industry has progressed to an optimisation phase, seeking to maximise production capacity and reduce maintenance costs with minimal capital spend. To support this, a programme of modifying designs was executed to improve conveyor transfer chute and belt life, which identified a need to challenge the industry practice for specification of designs to improve the functionality of the installed equipment. While acknowledging the importance of selecting the highest wear resistant materials for the intended application, this paper investigates design criteria related to decreasing conveyor transfer and belt wear. Of focus is a shift in the manner in which designs are specified, from specifications primarily governing geometrical constraints, to those meeting technical and functional requirements aimed at producing optimum geometry for a given set of material handling parameters. An assessment of transfer design criteria is presented.

A wireless, self-organizing network facilitates wide ranging data transmission in previously inaccessible areas and opens up a wide range of new opportunities. With Fluid Guard a system to detect leakages with highest accuracy and reacts properly for all kind of water cooled circuits is available, improving the safety in steelmaking process. Lance Guard can be utilized for all fully automatic and semi-automatic lance appliances, but is especially suitable for the products of Primetals Sublance Standard/2.0 and LiquiRob applications, since these systems make seamless integration particularly simple. Manual lance appliances may also be tested and diagnosed. Environmental plants have become a main part in steelmaking plants. Highest performance in combination with optimized energy consumption is the main target in Primetals Technologies’ innovations in automation optimization packages for dedusting systems. A new approach for preventive maintenance and operator assistance is introduced with the Acoustic Expert System. The environmental management of steel mill slag should be understood as a management philosophy, observing technical, economic and environmental criteria associated with their generation, storage and final destination. The slag can be considered as a synthetic mineral resource and become a very useful co-product in different areas. The Argentinean steel industry prioritizes the efficient environmental management of its waste, thus contributing to its own survival taking into account the sustainable development. In the world, the slag produced by the steel industry has been used as steel aggregate for road bases, railway ballast and filling material among others. Any factor that influences the economy of the country affects all branches of society, mainly public agencies, whose financial resources are increasingly scarce to deal with all public works. It is necessary to join efforts of private and public initiative in the adoption of alternative materials that replace the use of finite natural resources. This presentation aims to show the work done by private companies together with public bodies and universities to obtain a regulatory document for the management of slag as steel aggregates for three different uses, namely: road use, railway use and general use.

Titanium is an alloying element used to refine grain size in steel and improve its physical and mechanical properties. In some stainless steels it is used to increase the resistance to corrosion by the precipitation of titanium carbides or carbonitrides. Its alloying performance is highly variable and depends largely on the stage of the secondary metallurgy process when it is added. Furthermore, the addition method (wire injection or direct addition) has a remarkable influence in secondary refining. This paper describes the tests performed in vacuum degasser (VD), with a highly compacted and encapsulated Ferrotitanium wire (FeTi HC). The yield of titanium in steel increased from 52% to 89%. Moreover, the consumption of the highly compacted Ferrotitanium was optimized.

The Gerdau Ouro Branco Mill, three years after the implementation of its new plate mill, has started to develop high complexity products. The plate mill’s learning curve has been increasingly challenging since products are being developed to their highest grades. This work aims to present the first results of the development of steels of the strength class of 510 MPa produced by TMCP (Thermomechanical Controlled Processing) followed by accelerated cooling. These results show the potential and advantage of the accelerated cooling process regarding to obtain products of high mechanical strength and high toughness, associated with a low equivalent carbon.

Safety was always in the focus of Badische Stahlwerke, however at the same time productivity has to increase as well in order to compete in a tough world market. In 2015 BSW produced over 2.2 Mio tons with two EAFs, leading to tap-to-tap times in average of under 40 minutes. Our philosophy has always been, that our most important success factor are the people: therefore we have to improve the working conditions as much as we can. Starting in 2012 Badische developed a robot that can support this goal. The first step was to use it for temp/sample taking, but the unit had to become a multi-tasker. Only 2 years later the first automated cartridge changer was installed at a customer site in Scandinavia, in late 2015 then the next tool was implement: tool changer allows now to use also a camera to check the condition inside of the heat after tapping. More tools are designed currently and will be implemented shortly. This paper describes the current installations and experiences as future applications.

The most recent modernization phase of the wire rod mill at Sterling Steel involved installation of a pre-finishing mill, using a Morgan Vee Mini-Block, a new water box and shear with utility systems and automation. The new mill configuration adds more stands to the mill for better drafting and is designed to improve finished product quality by providing a more uniform entry temperature, better control of the feed section into the No-Twist® mill as well as enhanced surface quality. The new shear improves cut length accuracy as well as decreases the amount of trimming to reduce yield loss. This paper explains the changes made in the mill and the features of the new equipment and automation.

In this context, Gijon has to be considered a brownfield project, where Paul Wurth has been awarded with the engineering, supply of key equipment as well as erection and commissioning supervision services for the rebuild of two coke oven batteries the modernization of the adjacent by-product and relevant waste water treatment plants. Boron steel is used in the industry due to its great wear and impact resistance. During the hot rolling production of 15B29 steel flat bars it is a recurrent problem that the bars will present warping while on the cooling bed. Control this phenomenon is an opportunity to have better productivity, preventing metallic losses. Through the observation of the macro and microstructure samples produced with different reheating temperatures and cooling rates, it was found the presence of residual stresses and cracks on warped bars macrostructure. The residual stresses appearance suggest that the material cooling is too fast. Billets temperature on the reheating furnace of 1230°C reduced to 1100°C and the production pace slowed down. Bars temperature when arriving the cooling bed was reduced from higher than 670°C to 625°C. The results obtained made it possible to produce the material with better quality, reducing the warping effect at the cooling bed. The major influence on the materials warping was identified as the cooling rate at the cooling bed and the reheating furnace temperature was adjusted to provide a homogeneous temperature along the bars.
