Production of crude petroleum in Mexico during 1935 totaled approximately 40,082,000 bbl., an increase of 1,925,000 bbl. over the previous year. Successful development continued in the Poza Rica field during the year, increasing production in that area from 3,708,000 bbl. in 1934 to 9,542,000 in 1935. The output of the South fields (Golden Lane) area decreased by 3,000,000 bbl. during the year, and the heavy-oil district of the Northern fields by 1,500,000 bbl. Production in the Tehuantepec fields showed a slight gain. Production of natural gasoline increased from 430,000 to 600,000 bbl. in 1935. Crude run to stills in local refineries is estimated at 30,000,000 bbl., some 4,000,000 bbl. more than in the previous year. Exports of crude and refined products were approximately 22,000,000 bbl., or 2,000,000 bbl. less than in 1934. Exclusive of ships bunkers, domestic consumption increased about 900,000 bbl. during the year, reaching an estimated total of 14,500,000 barrels. Only 74 wells were completed, as compared to 148 in 1934 and 91 in 1933. In proven areas 58 completions resulted in 33 producers and 25 failures. In northeastern Mexico, near the United States border, six wildcat wells were completed, all of which gave little or no encouraging results, except Rancheria No. 3, near Camargo, which is a fair-sized gas well. Four wildcats were drilled just northeast of the Northern fields (heavy-oil district), all of which were failures. A deep test was completed a short distance southeast of the Golden Lane (South fields) in Palo Blanco, which encountered small production not sufficient to exploit. On the Isthmus of Tehuantepec a wildcat well was completed for an estimated initial production of 2000 bbl. daily, a short distance south of the old Jalapa field, which was perhaps the most important new development of the year. Four other wildcats drilled in the Isthmus district resulted in failures. A theoretical examination of the fracturing of rocks by means of pressure applied in boreholes leads to the conclusion that, regardless of whether the fracturing fluid be of the penetrating or non-penetrating type, the fractures produced should be approximately perpendicular to the axis of least stress. The general state of stress underground is that in which the three principal stresses are unequal. For tectonically relaxed areas characterized by normal faulting, the least stress should be horizontal; the fractures produced should be vertical with the injection pressure less than that of the overburden. In areas of active tectonic compression, the least stress should be vertical and equal to the pressure of the overburden; the fractures should be horizontal with injection pressures equal to or greater than the pressure of the overburden. Horizontal fractures cannot be produced by hydraulic pressures less than the total pressure of the overburden. These conclusions are compatible with field experience in fracturing and with the results of laboratory experimentation. INTRODUCTION The hydraulic-fracturing technique of well stimulation is one of the major developments in petroleum engineering of the last decade. The technique was introduced to the petroleum industry in a paper by J. B. Clark,' of the Stanolind Oil and Gas Co. in 1948, and since then its use has progressively expanded so that by the end of 1955 more than 100,000 individual treatments had been performed. The technique itself is mechanically related to three other phenomena concerning which ah extensive literature had previously developed. These are: (1) pressure parting in water injection wells in secondary-recovery operations, (2) lost circulation during drilling, and (3) the breakdown of formations during squeeze-cementing operations, all of which appear to involve the formation of open fractures by pressure applied in a wellbore. The most popular interpretation of this mechanism has been that the pressure had parted the formation along a bedding plane and lifted the overburden, notwithstanding the fact that in the great majority of cases where pressures were known they were significantly less than those due to the total weight of the overburden as determined from its density. Prior to 1948, this prevalent opinion had already been queried by Dickey and Andresen,2 in a study of pressure parting; and by Walker,"' who, in studies of squeeze cementing, pointed out that the pressures required were mostly less than those of the overburden, and inferred that the fractures should be vertical. J. B. Clark,' in his paper introducing hydraulic fracturing, and later Howard and Fast," and Scott, Bearden, and Howard," also of Stanolind, postulated that the entire weight of the overburden need not be lifted in producing horizontal fractures, but that it was only necessary to- lift an "effective overburden," requiring a correspondingly lower pressure. Hubbert,7 in discussing the paper by Scott and associates, pointed out that the normal state of stress underground is one of unequal principal stresses; and in tectonically relaxed areas, characterized by normal faults, the least stress should be horizontal. Therefore, in most cases, fracturing should be possible with pressure less than that of the overburden and, moreover, such fractures should be vertical. Harrison, Kieschnick, and McGuire,8 also on the expectation that the least principal stress should be horizontal, argued strongly in favor of vertical fracturing. IN 1923 a Western mining company was experimenting with the device of an inventor designed to locate buried ores by radio. Because the progress was slow and the results were confusing, the company began to doubt the usefulness of the method and invited me to review the whole question of the application of physics to ore detection. I was fortunate in securing the cooperation of several physicists who had worked with me during the war on the problem of submarine detection. This group has been increased and has been studying the problem of physical exploration for ores since that time. It was evident that the problem is a big one, with many angles of approach. Its general features may be set down, in rough outline, as follows: The soils, rocks and ores hidden beneath the surface differ one from another in many respects. These differences may be made to furnish a clew for the physicists working from the surface. To bring these differences into action the physicist creates some kind of an effect which penetrates into the ground and is distorted and reflected when it meets boundaries between different sorts of underground structure. In other words, he sends a message down, and the rocks and ore send back signals in reply. In picturing this process, we should not regard the ground as dense and impenetrable. The kind of messages used pass through the earth about as readily as a sound wave travels the air. If, then, the fundamental procedure is to shout down questions in the hope that an orebody will hear and answer back to us, it is clear that a large part of the expert's study must relate to the kind of questions best suited to the temperament and intelligence of orebodies. It will be easier for the ore to reply to some of our questions than to others, and it is for us to find the right questions. In certain cases, we are spared the necessity of using a messenger; because nature has already provided one. For example, we already have a terrestrial magnetic field which auto-matically and continually conveys messages from underneath. IN THE Lake Superior District, the air indoors must be heated continuously during eight months of the year and occasionally during the remaining months. Incident with mining in this district, therefore, there is need for heating many of the buildings connected with these operations. In addition to the mine buildings, that is, shops, engine, houses, offices, change houses, etc., such public buildings as schools, library, and theater, when close to the mines, are often supplied from the mine heating mains. At the Copper Range Company's mines, Champion, Trimountain and Baltic, the heating surface thus supplied from the mine mains is over 50,000 sq. ft. (4645 sq. m.) which requires a steam consumption, at times, of 18,000 lb. (8165 kg.) per hour, or the equivalent of a rate of over 50 tons of coal per day (were live steam used). This figure is based on a consumption of 1/3 lb. per square foot of heating surface during the coldest weather, and provided the system is not wasting steam by blowing it to the atmosphere or into the return line on account of leaky traps, which so often is the case. Under the latter conditions, steam consumptions of three to four times the above rate are not uncommon. This shows that the cost of heating is of enough importance to be given serious consideration, especially at this time of rising prices of fuel. The power and heating value of exhaust steam are appreciated by most engineers, and its application for such purposes is general. At our stamp mills, the exhaust from the stamps is used to operate low-pressure turbines, thus reducing the former water rate per horsepower developed by more than 50 per cent.

ABOUT fifty pages of Henry M. Howe's profound treatise, "The Metallography of Steel and Cast Iron," are devoted to twinning with special reference to the origin, nature and general significance of the Neu-mann bands in ferrite. Howe believed with Osmond and Cartaud1 that the Neumanns are mechanical twins and his careful observations leave no doubt that these straight-sided narrow bands habitually occur parallel to trapezohedral planes of form {211}. Attempts to develop the structure of the bands by various methods so that their identity could be established beyond question have not been conspicuously successful. Howe thought that they deflected slip bands. Some of the etching figures which have been developed within and adjacent to Neumann bands support the contention that they are twins. A good example of this effect in ferrite containing 0.6 per cent. of nickel and 1.3 per cent. of phosphorus, originally due to Harnecker and Rassow,2. was reproduced in the 1928 lecture before the Institute of Metals Division on twinning in metals.3 In this case, the sides of the figures might represent the traces of cubic planes laid bare by etching a properly oriented grain of ferrite, twinned along a plane of form 12111. Our own observations in this direction may be represented by Fig. 1 which shows in a deeply etched cavity in the boundary region between a Neumann band and the original crystal two small crystal surfaces which resemble the faces meeting at a reentrant angle in the simple cube twinned along a bisecting plane of form {211} as sketched in Fig. 2. Introduction STRIPPING is the name given to the process of removing clay, rock, or other cover from deposits of coal or ore. In this paper it is intended to cover the methods used in carrying on this operation in the anthracite coal regions of Pennsylvania. In doing this, attention will be chiefly devoted to those methods wherein practice in different sections of the region differs, or is susceptible to change or improvement, though it is intended to give as complete data as possible concerning all stages of the operation. The data from which this paper has been prepared have been collected and submitted by a committee representing the larger users of stripping methods, of which committee the writer has acted as chairman. Data and assistance have also been obtained from various mining men, engineers, contractors and manufacturers of stripping equipment, to all of whom our appreciation is clue.

The purpose of this article is not to compare one type of grinding machinery with another and to conclude from a series of tests that one particular machine is superior to all others. Neither is the reader asked to tire himself with the details of many tests to prove the statements herein made. The Chilean mill stands today almost an outcast from the milling world. It ranks with the applicant for a job who has been given a trial along with others and condemned because he was not able to perform the definite task assigned as well as the others, and was forever eliminated. The judges did not tarry long enough to try this aspirant in a field of a slightly different nature. Even though it has been condemned, the writer contends that the published records will indicate that the trials were never shifted into the field of greatest efficiency for the . Chilean mill. Those of us who cling to this outcast as a fine grinder in our milling operations do not wish, naturally, to be condemned also, with the machine, and yet we feel that we are classed as behind the times, at least in this phase of our milling judgment. Hence there is considerable personal feeling in our efforts. During the last few years there have been published several papers on the relative merits of the various grinding machines. In two of these articles a comparison was made between Chilean mills and cylindrical grinders. In each case the Chilean mill came out second best from about all standpoints. The outstanding feature in these comparisons would seem to be the decided attempt to keep all conditions the same, so that each machine could be judged on its merit. As Mr. David Cole states,1 "We are inclined to regard a direct comparison of grinders arranged side by side, and making a product that affords as nearly as possible the same screen measure, as the Supreme Court in these grinding matters." The writer agrees that this is the very best method for true comparison between machines. The results in the two detailed tests should give the relative merits of the two grinders in doing the work assigned. And they probably do. The conclusion drawn in each case was adverse to the Chilean mill as a fine-grinding machine. However, the duty placed upon the machines was that of converting material that had already been

THE little coal mine at Otsego, in the Winding Gulf field of southern West Virginia was dying. In the history of coal mining thousands of mines have been successful at first, but usually a change occurred and profits ceased. Often be change was so gradual and extended over such a length of time that the fundamental causes did not stand out in sharp relief and their significance was not realized. Studies often reveal that the cause for failure was in the arteries that connect the producing places with the mine entrance. Profits continued so long as the working places were close to the tipple and while the thrill of newness aid ease of access resulted in effective supervision from day to day. The air- way and haulageway, the wire line and manway, may have been sufficient when the distance from the entrance was a few hundred feet, but were inadequate when this was extended for thousands of feet.

InveStIgations into the possibilities of economically mining and concentrating low-grade iron ores of the Lake Superior region are attracting increasing attention. Among the organizations that are carrying on the work are the United States Bureau of Mines, the State of Minnesota (which spends about $80,000 annually on problems of the iron and ferroalloy ores of Minnesota), and the State of Michigan (which spends about $10,000 annually of its iron-ore research). Several of the mining companies are also financing research. Of the states in the Lake Superior district, Minnesota has done most in iron-ore concentration. In 1930, thirty-seven concentrating plants were in operation on the Mesabi Range, beneficiating about one-third of the total ore shipped. About one-half of these plants reduced silica; the others reduced moisture or improved the structure of the ore.' Research into the possibilities of magnetic concentration of the Eastern Mesabi magnetite ores indicates that vast tonnages of that ore may be utilized at a profit in the not distant future. Magnetic concentration has also been tried at Sellwood, Ontario, on the Moose Mountain deposit, and at the Berkshire mine in Wisconsin on the magnetic ores of the Western Gogebic Range. There have been few attempts to concentrate Michigan iron ores. In order to determine the possibilities of such concentration, iron-ore research has been carried on at the Michigan College of Mining and Technology for the past few years. After a general survey of the iron ores of the state, a program of more detailed experimentation was outlined, starting with work on the Ironwood formation of the Gogebic Range. The results of this research led to the belief that gravity methods will produce fairly satisfactory concentrates from the parts of the iron formation that are made up of comparatively thick alternating beds of rather high-grade ore and lean chert. THE problem of handling the large quantities of water encountered in the Old Dominion mine presents many features of interest. In the present paper are discussed the probable sources of water, the pumping equipment, the increased flow into the mine in the early part of 1915, culminating in the flooding of the 18th and 16th levels in March of that year, and the difficulties that were met with during the high-water period. I. PRELIMINARY The Old Dominion mine, situated 1 mile north of the town of Globe, Ariz., has long been one of the prominent copper producers of the State, and until the opening up of the copper schist deposits in the neighboring mines of Miami, was responsible for the greater part of the copper output from the Globe district. As the gradual exhaustion of its orebodies near the surface led to the downward development of the mine, more water was encountered in the western portions directly underlying the dacite formation until the drainage problem became a serious factor in the operation of the mine and in the economical extraction of the ore. A heavy inrush of water on the 10th level of the mine in 1906, preceded by still earlier water difficulties, rendered imperative the immediate installation of a pumping equipment capable of handling large flows of water. While the Old Dominion has been recognized as a wet mine since its early clays and one in which the complete control of the water situation was of paramount importance in the development of the lower levels, it is chiefly in the last nine years, since the installation of the increased pumping equipment, that the mine has developed and handled large quantities of water.

Considering the great advance in the development and application of electricity, it is not strange that eventually a big field for its use has been found in oil-field operations. So far as is known, the first electric drive in oil-field operations was in the Russian field of Baku in 1900. The first application in this country was made by the South Penn Oil Co. near Folsom, West Va. in 1903. In 1916, electric power was first used in the Burma fields of India for drilling and pumping. Between 1916 and 1922, The Empire Gas & Fuel Co. made the first large electrical installation in the Mid-Continent fields. But although the first application was made 27 years ago, it is only within the last 10 years that oil companies have begun to look upon its use with much favor. Within the last few years, there has been a steady increase in the use of electricity in the oil fields. The first application of electricity for oil-field operations in Wyoming was in the Lander field in 1919; the second was in 1924 in Salt Creek; and the third, and last to date, was made by the Continental Oil Co. in the Big Muddy field during 1926. Lander Field The electrification of oil-field operations in Wyoming was initiated by J. W. Steele, superintendent of the Producers & Refiners Oil Corpn., in the Lander field in 1919. At that time, 32 wells were being pumped from five band-wheel powers, with oil engines as the prime movers. Eight barrels of fuel oil were used for power per day and at the price of 90 c. per bbl. the fuel bill was $36 per day. It was decided to try a 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motor on one of these powers. Electric power was generated with steam at the old Wind River refinery station. This test was so successful that in 1920 all five powers were equipped with 15 to 35-hp. oil-field motors, the power being obtained from the Sinks Canyon hydroelectric station. Four of these powers pumped wells at an average depth of 1450 ft., and the fifth pumped wells at an average of 2100 ft. In 1920, the average production per day from the 32 wells was 325 bbl. PAPERS by D. B. Scott, E. G. Deane, and J. H. Hensley, Jr.1 describe the succession of mining methods used in the Miami mine—squarelset system, shrinkage stoping, top-slicing method, and the undercut caving system which was then being used, and which embraced the use of finger raises. The last-named system worked well but when the rich ore was exhausted it became necessary to reduce costs so as to make available a low-grade ore containing an average of less than 0.9 per cent. total copper with less than 0.8 per cent. in sulfide form and with no precious-metal values. There was then developed for this low-grade ore the system of separate large block-caving stopes, in lateral dimensions 150 by 300 ft., or 150 by 150 ft., with intervals between stopes of the same size so that subsequently these pillars may be similarly mined. The results have been most favorable. Under the previous system the production of ore per man-shift for all underground labor was 8 tons. The present production per man-shift underground is 28 tons. In starting this work the problems were: 1. How the ground would cave above the stopes. 2. Whether in the first stopes caving would encroach on the pillars as laid out. 3. Whether in subsequent mining of the pillars waste filling would be drawn from the previously caved adjacent stopes. The problem of unsteady-state condensate-gas flow through porous media leads to a set of second-order non-linear partial differential equations. Such a set of equations is numerically solved in the case of radial two-phase flow around a well, taking into consideration both the thermodynamical properties of the fluid and the mechanical properties of the reservoir. The fluid properties, reflecting the PVT relationship of the gaseous and liquid phases, are expressed by using the partial specific masses of the two main separator products in these phases. The flow properties of the reservoir rock are expressed by the generalized Darcy's law for the liquid phase and by a quadratic relationship between the rate of flow and the pressure gradient for the gaseous phase. The numerical solution of the equations for pressure and saturation US radius and time is worked out through programs written for a computer. The evolution of bottom-hole pressures, well productivities or- deliverabilities and effluent compositions with the depletion of the reservoir is easily derived. The application to the Saharian gas-condensate field Hassi R'Mel led to a better understanding of the drainage mechanism. A zone of fairly high liquid saturation develops around the wells, reducing the effective permeability, and represents a loss of condensible products in addition to the PVT-like retrograde condensation. lnside this zone, near the well, the deviation from Darcy's law for the flow of the gaseous phase governs the well deliver-ability. A back-pressure test has been computed and correlates with the field results. INTRODUCTION Two-phase flow of volatile hydrocarbons, like condensate gas or light crude oil, may be treated as the flow of a binary mixture by an arbitrary division of the chemical components into two groups. This is translated into two equations of mass continuity, which constitute a set of relation- ships for the pressure and the saturations vs the space coordinates and the time. The equations contain the laws governing the composition and the motion of the phases. The problem so defined is solved with the assumption that the compositions of the phases at any pressure are respectively the same as those observed in a PVT measuring cell under differential liberation. In a first series of computations, it was assumed that the flow obeys the generalized Darcy's law. A satisfactory representation of the retrograde condensation around the well was thus obtained. In addition, the trend toward decreasing effective permeabilities was obtained, and the computed composition of the effluent checked the laboratory values. However, it has not been possible within this basic assumption to represent the non-linear relationship between the production rate and the bottom-hole pressure drawdown as observed for gas wells in the field. Following the advice of A. Houpeurt it was decided to consider the relative permeability to gas as a function of the velocity of the gas Phase.1 The necessary physical determinations were made by E. COstaséque using a method devised by A. Houpeurt and R. Iffly. As numerical processing of the equations progressed, several difficulties were encountered which were overcome through collaboration with the computer manufacturer. This mathematical model of two-phase flow in porous media had been primarily intended for and extensively applied to the case of the Hassi R'Mel gas-condensate field, operated by SN Repal for SEHR, a joint subsidiary of SN Repal and CFP (A). The programs have also found their applications to forecast the behavior of several fields in the Sahara area containing light and volatile hydrocarbons. BASIC EQUATIONS We will consider a zone in the porous reservoir where the flow properties and the in situ composition of the fluids can be assumed to be uniform.
