THE Rock Chapel plant of Consolidated Quarries Corporation (Fig, 1) is three miles northeast of Lithonia, DeKalb County, Georgia, It was opened about eight years ago for crushed stone aggregate. This paper reviews a number of experiments that have been tried in drilling and blasting, and gives the practice in use today. The rock worked is a bare dome of granite gneiss about 3000 ft. in diameter, rising 150 ft. above the surrounding ground (Fig. 2). It is uniform in composition and quality, without seams, and extends down-ward to unknown depth below the quarry floor. A water well drilled 600 ft. remained in the same rock. The principal difficulty encountered in blasting is an easy split, which tends to break down the rock in large blocks.

Data of a known statistical quality has been successfully used in a system of conventional fluid mechanics equations essentially free of empirical "conformance factors to prediet early detailed field 03 in a reservoir where gravity drainage is important and oil and rock properties vary con. siderably. The system is useful where comparative recovery predictions for one or more cases of natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance are needed and the reservoir is not too heterogeneous. INTRODUCTION Many authors, have examined various facet* of the gravity drainage-gas cap pressure maintenance problem over the last several years. Two of them. Burtchaell and Elkins, have published practical studies. In the case described in the present paper the best development and operating plan for one of the important reservoirs of the Bolivar Coastal Field in Western Venezuela was urgently needed. It was requested that sound comparative economics be presented along with an engineering evaluation of no additional drilling, maximum drilling. several cases of gas pressure maintenance, of water flooding and combination cases. A rapid analysis of the effect on recovery of the range of crude and rock properties indicated that none of the published methods using average properties would yield adequate comparative predictions. This paper covers the predictive system developed to deal with natural depletion and gas cap pressure maintenance. The large amount of data available for this field permitted statistically reliable correlations to be made of most rock and oil properties, and the evident smooth areal variations of these properties encouraged the construction of a lineal mathematical model of material balance and fluid flow equations, which could be manipulated by a modified iterative procedure. The manipulation is much more adaptable to computing machines than manually operated calculators and subsequent studies have been prepared for the IBM Card Program Calculator. A matrix as opposed to linear model has been tentatively worked out by other members of our group to deal with more heterogeneous reservoirs. It is more adaptable to computers such as IBM-701 or the Remington-Rand Univac. In 1950, when the system reported below was developed, no rapid computing machines were available to the author. Their existence and promise encouraged an initial approach by hand. Some details of oil and rock Property correlation are included because there are a surprisingly large number of medium-sized reservoirs in the world that show systematic property variations which are significant for a rigorous analycon. All large reservoirs (over half a billion barrels recovery) with which the author is familiar contain at minimum a significant temperature variation. Using the rock and oil property correlations, past pressure and production, the gas-oil ratio history of the reservoir was computed and found to be in close agreement with field measurements. The future performance under cases of natural depletion, gas injection of 100 MMcf/day, and of 130 MMcf/day, was then computed; a 70 MMcf/day case was also carried far enough to provide data for comparative economics. The 130 MMcf/day case proved to be the most attractive. A 50,000 horsepower gas turbine driven centrifugal compressor plant to take this quantity of adjacent field gas from 30 to 1,950 psia and inject it into the reservoir is under construction. The total cost of the project will exceed 20 million dollars.

The introduction of Vertical Crater Retreat (VCR) Stoping at the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD, constitutes a major advance in Homestake Mining Company's efforts to improve productivity and reduce costs through under- ground mine mechanization. The work to date indicates that Vertical Crater Retreat Stoping is one of the safest methods of underground hardrock mining today, and is competitive with all other forms of stoping in terms of cost and productivity. Homestake anticipates that VCR stoping will account for approximately 35% of the total mine production in 1981.

Laboratory and field testing of various squeeze cementing techniques and materials revealed that many improvements could be made in squeeze cementing operations. The use of a slow-pumping squeeze cementing procedure permitted the control of the quantity of cement displaced into a formation and aided in obtaining a high final squeeze pressure. Field testing indicated the desirability of obtaining high final squeeze pressures, the need for improved formation breakdown fluids, and the necessity of controlling the pressure differential during testing after a squeeze job. INTRODUCTION During the past few years, squeeze cementing operations have been investigated, both from the theoretical as well as the practical point of view, in an effort to arrive at some solution to the many and varied problems that arise with this type of operation. A review of well files indicated that in many instances, wells were being squeeze cemented four and five times before a satisfactory pressure buildup was obtained. There seemed to be considerable variation in opinion as to the proper method of squeeze cementing, as well as disagreement as to the proper breakdown agent, the quantity of cement that should be used, type retainer and length of WOC* time that was necessary. Consequently, it was deemed advisable to approach this problem theoretically, field testing each idea developed in hopes of eventually arriving at a squeeze cementing procedure that would give reasonable assurance of a successful job after one squeeze cementing operation. This investigation was. therefore, divided into two broad headings: (1) Preliminary studies, which include both theoretical and laboratory studies, and (2) Field investigations to determine the proper squeeze cementing methods. PRELIMINARY STUDIES Overburden Pressure Studies Squeeze cementing problems are so intimately related to the earth's overburden pressure that solutions to them are very difficult, if not impossible, without an understanding of the nature and magnitude of the overburden pressures encountered at the depths of producing wells. It was thus felt that the first approach to research on squeeze cementing should be made through a study of these pressures. Since there has been rather loose usage of a number of the terms related to overburden preasure by different writers, the terms to be subsequently used are defined here. Theoretical overburden pressure is the calculated pressure at any given depth exerted by the theoretical weight of overlying formations as calculated from the average rock density. Fluid displacement pressure is that pressure at which fluid can be injected into a formation after it has been broken down. It may be more or less than the theoretical overburden pressure. Formation breakdown pressure is that pressure at which a formation parts or breaks and is usually thought of as fluid displacement pressure plus rock strength. Breakdown agent is that fluid with which the formation is fractured. The first step in the study of the earth's overburden pressures involved a review of pertinent technical literature. The general opinion expressed was that the overburden pressure gradient of the earth's formations is roughly 1.0 psi per foot of depth, and that application of sufficient pressure to stratified formations. will cause them to part at or parallel to the bedding planes. The second step in the study of overburden pressures involved a study of available well data in an effort to obtain some definite information as to the actual values experienced in the field for the above mentioned terms. Data from 115 cement squeeze jobs in the Gulf Coast area and 46 cement squeeze jobs and acid jobs in the West Texas-New Mexico area were closely analyzed. NAME "Utah" is derived from the name of the Indian tribe, variously spelled "Yuta," "Ute," "Youta." "Uta." "Eutaw," and finally "Utah." It means "in the tops of the mountains," or "on the heights." The state emblem is the "Beehive," typical of industry. State nickname is "Beehive State." AREA Utah is the tenth state in area. It contains 84.990 square miles, of which 2.806 miles are water. When admitted as a territory in 1850. Utah included all the area from the east line of California to the summit of the Rocky Mountains between the 37th and 42nd parallels, which embraced practically all of the present state of Nevada, all of western Colorado, part of Idaho and part of Wyoming, in addition to the present area of Utah.

Sub boundaries and micropores, as well as certain other imperfections, may be revealed in aluminum by the formation of pits on the surface during cooling from elevated temperatures. The pits are attributed to the condensation of vacancies from supersaturated solution. This "vacancy pit" phenomenon has been used as an etching technique for studying the structure of aluminum specimens grown from the melt. Three fundamental structures were studied: stria-tions, cells, and dendrites. Two types of striations, as well as a crosswise structure are reported. Mic-roporosity is observed to occur in the cell walls on freezing. Subboundaries between primary, secondary, and tertiary branches are observed in dendritic growth. A special case is cited in which cellular growth suppresses the formation of striations. SMALL, well-defined pits have been observed to form on the surfaces of electropolished aluminum specimens during cooling from elevated temperatures.' This phenomenon was attributed to the condensation, from supersaturated solution, of vacancies at particular points on the surface. It was shown that the amount of cooling required for the formation of pits increased exponentially with decreasing holding temperatures in a way that was consistent with the thesis that a critical supersaturation of vacancies was required for the pits to form. Pits do not form in the vicinity of certain imperfections, namely, subgrain or normal graind boundaries, phase boundaries, certain surface irregularities, and pores. The width of the pit-free region increases with decreasing cooling rate. This observation suggests that the imperfections in question are effective sinks for vacancies and that the pit-free region around them is material that is not sufficiently supersaturated with respect to vacancies to nucleate the surface pits during cooling.

The operations of the Copper Range Co. are located in the Michigan copper district at the southern end of the Keweenaw Peninsula, 8 miles southwest of Hough ton (the center of the district). All the producing mines are situated in a long narrow zone paralleling the peninsula and occupying the central portion. This zone is about 25 miles long and 3 to 4 miles wide. The important mines, in their order from northeast to southwest, are, Mohawk, Ahmeek, Allouez, North Kearsarge, Wolverine, South Kearsarge, Centennial, Calumet & Hecla, Osceola, Franklin, Quincy, Isle Royale, Baltic, Trimountain, and Champion; the last three are operated by the Copper Range Co. The existence of copper deposits in this district became known soon after the discovery of America. Many references by early explorers show that copper was found in the possession of many of the American Indians that inhabited the Great Lakes region. There is abundant evidence that exploration of these copper deposits extended into prehistoric times; and some indication that the American Indians carried on operations shortly before the advent of white men. An account of the finding of primitive mining appears in the Government publications of 1850-51 by Foster and Whitney. Although earlier expeditions by white men had been made to the Keweenaw peninsula, an attempt to commercialize the district was not made until after 1765, when Alex. Henry, a British subject, searched the shores of Lake Superior for mineral treasure. His first expedition took him to the Ontonagon River, where he found the famous mass of copper now on exhibition at Washington. In 1771, he started operations along this river with a crew financed by English capital; but after much difficulty and only meager success he found only detached masses while in search for a major deposit. There is no record of any cxploration from 1774 to 1820. In 1838, Dr. Douglas Houghton was appointed state geologist. A characteristic property of bituminous coal is that upon being heated the coal becomes plastic, evolves volatile gases, and finally solidifies into coke. This fundamental characteristic is of utmost importance and is utilized in the production of the high-temperature coke upon which the steel industry is so dependent; but from the standpoint of operation in the domestic underfeed stoker this coking tendency seriously interferes with efficient combustion. When the coke formed has too strong a structure, certain difficulties result, such as low rate of burning, slow response to heat demand, and, in extreme cases, extinction of fire. The plastic mass prevents uniform distribution of air through the fuel bed and, with strongly coking coals, large dense pieces of coke are produced which have much less reacting surface than was possessed by the original coal. In both ignition and combustion of solid fuels, the extent of the reacting surface is an accelerating factor. Poor combustion permits a surplus of fuel to accumulate in the furnace because the rate of feed and the rate of combustion are not in equilibrium, and this produces an unbalanced condition detrimental to continued automatic service. In order to bum strongly coking coals satisfactorily in a conventional stoker during the three requisite types of operation—continuous, intermittent and hold-fire, frequent attention is necessary. Domestic stokers are defined by the industry as residential stoker heaters that burn 60 lb. of coal or less per hour. With a few exceptions, these units employ the underfeed principle of combustion in which both air and coal move in the same direction up and through the fuel bed. Domestic combustion equipment has difficulty in meeting the problems presented by the several variations in ash and volatile matter, in ash-clinkering tendencies, in coking properties, and in the particle size of bituminous coals. The work of Bituminous Coal Research Inc. at Battelle Memorial Institute has shown that, of these, coking characteristics and the clinkering tendencies have the greatest effect upon the operation of the conventional clinkering type of stoker. Typical coke formations in a clinkering type of underfeed domestic stoker are illustratcd in Fig. I, which shows (A) the ideal fuel bed obtained with a noncoking or free-burning coal; (B) the type of fuel bed formed with a coal that produces a weak coke; and (C) the type of fuel bed obtained with a strongly coking coal. C is characteristic of the fuel bed developed when the average Pennsylvania bituminous coal is burned in an underfeed stoker of conventional type. It is apparent from these pictures that the formation of coke trees will seriously interfere with the efficient automatic combustion of Pennsylvania bituminous coals.

SANDSTONE has been prepared for glassmaking purposes, and marketed from the White River Valley in-Arkansas at Guion, Izard County, since about 1910-soon after the completion of the White River Branch of the Missouri Pacific R. R. Co. Until 1921, operations were somewhat spasmodic and ended in many failures. In that year a plant was built by the Silica Products Co., Inc., and since that time the operation has been continuous and steady. The land is held under leases, covering about 30 sq. mi. of the best sandstone adjacent to the railroad. Most of the product is shipped to glassmakers. GEOLOGY The St. Peter sandstone is rather widely distributed in north central Arkansas and- is exposed most prominently in outcrops along the slopes of the White River Valley and its tributaries that form the division between the Boston Mountains to the south and the Salem Plateau of the Ozarks to the north. It is of Ordovician age and is generally underlain by Cotter dolomite and capped by Plattin limestone, except in the vicinity of Bellefonte and Everton. At those places, it is a massive cross-bedded, laminated, saccharoidal sandstone; underlying it is the Everton limestone and overlying it, the Joachim magnesium limestone. The sandstone at Everton contains numerous phosphatic pebbles and inclusions of sandy limestone. The irregularity of cross-section, the evidence of sorting action and the phosphatic pebbles appear to be indications of secondary deposition.

It was observed that chromized coatings on low carbon steel could be embrittled by cooling slowly through the 475°C range. A higher chromium coating was more susceptible to embrittlement than a lower chromium coating. Coating structure and composition could be correlated with the chromizing process and prior carbon content of the steel. IT was recently observed that during the fabrication of rectangular tubings made with chromized thin gage 1010 steel, a high percentage of these parts were fractured readily in a brittle manner under the light impact-forming load employed. Ensuing investigation indicated the cause for such brittle failures to be the so-called 475°C embrittlement of the chromized coatings. The experimental work and results are briefly reported. Rectangular tube sections of normalized AISI C1010 steel, which had a cross-section of 0.5x1.5 in. and a wall thickness of 0.030 in., were chromized to yield coatings having several ranges of thickness, varying from 0.0005 to 0.002 in. Essentially, the chromizing process is similar to that described by Samuel and Lockington,' which consists of heating the parts in a sealed container at about 955°C for 4 hr in intimate contact with a chromizing mixture* samples in a hydraulic press, and the other employed a simple beam bending test of the flat sides of the tubing walls. Neither, however, was able to differentiate the relative brittleness of samples known to include both the brittle and tough types, since the impact-brittle samples were found to deform readily in a manner similar to the tough ones. Both the tough and brittle samples were studied by reflection microscopy. Observation showed that the microstructures of the steel cores were similar in content and distribution of inclusions as well as in the ferritic grain size. Results of Filar micrometer measurements showed that coating thicknesses+ of the brittle samples averaged 0.0007 in., whereas those of the tough samples averaged 0.0016 in. The micrographs of Fig. 2 illustrate the structural differences between coatings of both types of samples. By dissolving the steel cores in nitric acid, coatings of both the brittle and tough samples were isolated. Simple bending tests showed that coatings of the brittle samples cracked readily at about 90" bend, whereas those of the tough samples could be bent nearly 180° without cracking. Triaxial compression tests with independently applied external confining pressures and internal pore pressures show that the ultimate compressive strengths of representative oil well cements are nearly linear functions of effective pressure — the difference between external and internal pressures on the jacketed cylindrical specimens (to 15,000 psi). The strengths are little affected by the test temperature to 350F (not to be confused with the curing temperature). At an effective pressure of 15,000 psi, strengths are in the rage of 30,000 to 50,000 psi, comparable to those of sedimentary rocks under similar conditions. The cements become very ductile even under low effective pressures; permanent shortenings of 30 per cent or more are attainable without rupture. INTRODUCTION Since the pioneering work of Richart, Brandtzaeg and Brown1 on the failure of cement under combined compressive stresses, it has been recognized that ultimate compressive strength is greatly enhanced by the application of confining pressure. More recently, Mc Henry2 showed that the strength of concrete was a linear function of the effective pressure (the difference between the external confining pressure on a jacketed specimen and the internal fluid pore pressure), at least for a range of 0 to 1,500 psi. The effect of temperature had not been investigated, and no previous systematic triaxial compression testing of naterials used for oilwell cementing seems to have been done. The present work was suggested by the late J. hi. Bugbee3 who stated that "consideration of the common application of high-pressure hydraulic fracturing to the initial completion or recompletion of wells, and the large pressure drawdowns in some producing wells, particularly those in abnormally high-pressure gas-condensate reservoirs, raises the question of what is a suitable cement strength for various completions. The intuitive belief exists that cement strength need be no greater than formation strength. Tests should, however, be conducted at downhole conditions." The ultimate compressive strengths of rocks penetrated by the borehole must rise several fold with increasing depth.4 This marked enhancement of strength is due to the influence of the effective pressure, the total weight per unit area of the overburden less the hydrostatic pore pressure. (The effect of temperature due to the geothermal gradients is relatively small for depths to 30,000 ft.) .A significant comparison of the strengths of rocks and cements at downhole conditions requires knowledge of the confined compressive strengths of cements as well. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES The theory and technique of triaxial compression testing are fully discussed in earlier reports.4-6 Briefly, cylindrical specimens 1-in. long and 0.5-in. in diameter are jacketed in thin copper tubes of negligible strength, placed in the test chamber and subjected to an external confining pressure of kerosene and loaded axially by the piston at a strain rate of 1 per cent per minute. Pore pressures of water (or kerosene) are applied independently through the hollow piston and are maintained constant during the shortening of the specimen, Tests at sensibly 0 pore pressure are arranged so that any free water in the cement can escape to the atmosphere. (If egress of water were denied, pore pressure would rapidly attain the value of the external confining pressure because of reduction of pore space.) The test chamber can be heated for high-temperature experiments. Unless otherwise noted, the cement samples were air dried for about a week. Recorded during a test are pore and confining pressures, shortening and axial differential force (total force less the product of the confining pressure and the area of the piston). Development and exploration in Oklahoma showed a definite increase in 1941 over 1940 in production, wildcat activity and total well completions. Geological and geophysical work continued and possibly increased slightly in amount. Oklahoma retained third place in the ranking of oil-producing states of the nation, topped only by Texas and California, and followed by Illinois in fourth position. Production averaged 416,800 bbl. daily, a 1.7 per cent increase, as compared with 409,900 bbl. daily for the year 1940. Maintenance of the state's relatively stable producing rate resulted from the discovery of numerous small pools, the recombing of old areas, the establishment of new producing horizons, and the drilling of an increased number of marginal wells. The market for the Mid-Continent crude was strengthened materially to meet the increased demand. Coincident with a deeline in production in Illinois, shipment of Oklahoma-Kansas crude to the eastern points averaged 453,000 bbl. per day, an increase of 49.4 per cent as compared with 1940. The movement south amounted to an average of 42,000 bbl. per day, a loss of 41.7 per cent. Secondary-recovery programs in Oklahoma were given more consideration, operators realizing that in the future many pools would necessarily have to resort to this type of operation. More of this type of work is expected in the future; however, it was given an initial setback when the legislative proposal authorizing secondary recovery in the Wilcox zone of Oklahoma's largest pool, the Oklahoma City pool, was pigeonholed by the committee. A continuation of the low discovery rates within the state would possibly lead to a revival of interest in the project. Many pools formerly classified as prorated areas were removed from this classification and transferred into the group of settled production. At the close of the year the issuance of the Federal Conservation Order M-68 and the interrelated Preference Rating Order P-98 caused a sharp decline in drilling operations, which is expected to continue until such operations are stabilized at a lower rate. Development and exploration in Oklahoma showed a definite increase in 1941 over 1940 in production, wildcat activity and total well completions. Geological and geophysical work continued and possibly increased slightly in amount. Oklahoma retained third place in the ranking of oil-producing states of the nation, topped only by Texas and California, and followed by Illinois in fourth position. Production averaged 416,800 bbl. daily, a 1.7 per cent increase, as compared with 409,900 bbl. daily for the year 1940. Maintenance of the state's relatively stable producing rate resulted from the discovery of numerous small pools, the recombing of old areas, the establishment of new producing horizons, and the drilling of an increased number of marginal wells. The market for the Mid-Continent crude was strengthened materially to meet the increased demand. Coincident with a deeline in production in Illinois, shipment of Oklahoma-Kansas crude to the eastern points averaged 453,000 bbl. per day, an increase of 49.4 per cent as compared with 1940. The movement south amounted to an average of 42,000 bbl. per day, a loss of 41.7 per cent. Secondary-recovery programs in Oklahoma were given more consideration, operators realizing that in the future many pools would necessarily have to resort to this type of operation. AT THE request of a committee of the Engineering Division,1 National Research Council, a study of the properties of boiler plate at various temperatures up to about 900° F. (482° C.) has been instigated. The following is a report of preliminary tests made on two grades of ½ -in. plate and includes a description of the apparatus used in the determination of the proportional limit. Detailed reference to the many published investigations in connection with the properties of steel at various temperatures will be omitted from this report. Suffice to state that results obtained for variation in tensile strength elongation, and reduction in area with temperature are in substantial agreement with the effects now generally considered to be correct. Comparison of proportional limit values with results obtained by other investigators will be found in the conclusions.

Prior to 1909 that mountain of porphyry known as Sacramento Hill had hardly been touched though it had always been thought to contain ore. During that year, exploratory work was started by underground methods; drifting and raising continued until 1913. It was proved that a mineralized zone existed, the limits of which had not been determined ; so, because of the lower costs of exploratory work and the greater desirability of vertical sections, it was decided to prove the extent of the ore zone by churn drills. Drilling continued until 1917, when it seemed almost certain that the horizontal limits of the orebodies had been determined. Ore continued in depth in one direction beyond a point where it was economical to explore by churn drilling; this extension is still being developed by underground methods. The irregularities of the boundaries of the ore zones, together with the variable grades of ore encountered, made it necessary to drill on the corners of 100-ft. squares. Two ore zones were proved, known as the East and West Orebodies. The Sacramento Hill porphyry stock intruded into the Dividend fault. The fault ran roughly east and west with a dip to the south, having pre-Cambrian schists on the north against Paleozoic limestone on the south. This intrusion was accompanied by a silica breccia on the south periphery, along the limestone contact side. The ore lay in the silica breccia and in the porphyry, some distance from the breccia. NO ore was found in the heart of the porphyry mass on the north side, along the schist contact. The West Orebody is elliptic in shape, having a major axis of 1200 ft. (366 m.) and a minor axis of 800 ft. (244 m.); these diminish with depth until, at 300 ft., the axes are 500 ft. and 300 ft., respectively. The ore consists of chalcocite, some bornite, chalcopyrite, and considerable pyrite in a siliceous gangue. About 30 per cent. of the copper is caused by
