In recent years, the damping capacity of metals has come to be recognized as an important index of certain types of structural change. In a number of instances, this property has proved to be particularly sensitive, but insufficient work has been done to permit a general interpretation. There is considerable question at the present time as to just what factors are responsible for the internal dissipation of energy when a metal is carried through a cycle of stress, and these factors must be ascertained if the value of the damping method as a metallurgical tool is to be determined. Since internal stresses are among the chief causes of dissipation of internal energy, or damping capacity, it was thought that a study of the changes in damping during the recovery and recrystalliza-tion of a cold-worked metal might throw some light upon the subject, particularly if the damping changes were correlated with other properties that are better understood. Probably more work has been done on the recrystallization phenomena of alpha brass than on any other metal, so this was chosen as the material for the present investigation. Damping measurements on brass have been made by Förster and Köster.1 They showed that the annealing of a brass that had been cold-drawn to 50 per cent reduction produced a rapid fall in the damping, a flat minimum occurring at approximately the temperature of recrystallization. The damping remained at a low value until grain growth was well under way and then it increased rapidly with increasing grain size. Köster and Rosenthal2 continued the work in greater detail. They pointed out that the damping decrease does not correspond to the hardness drop but occurs at a lower temperature, suggesting that the relief or redistribution of internal stresses has a large effect while the actual recrystallization effect is small. They also show the increase in damping at the higher annealing temperatures. Their curves are reproduced in Fig. 1.

Production of many industrial minerals reached all-time records in 1965. In keeping with the high level of industrial activity throughout the nation, producers of many industrial minerals operated at capacity or near capacity, notably the producers of phosphate, potash and sulfur. In the case of sulfur, the demand exceeded production and orders were filled, in part, from stocks accumulated in previous years. Industrial minerals as a group continued to increase both in value and quantity at a faster percentage rate than metallic minerals and fuels, The U.S. Bureau of Mines estimated that the value of industrial minerals produced in 1963 was $4318 million vs. $2006 million for metals. Preliminary estimates for 1965 indicate that current value of production was again more than 2% times that of metals, thus making apparent their importance to the industrial life of the nation.

In planning and designing of underground excavations and construction, it is of considerable importance that the stresses and displacements in the rock mass subjected to arbitrary sequences of unloading and loading be within allowable limits. For determination of the stress and displacement fields, the usual approach is to treat the rock as an elastic material and to apply the principles of the theory of elasticity. However, analytic solutions are available only for a limited class of problems of simple geometry and idealized material properties. Nonhomogeneity and anisotropy of material coupled with complex geometrical configuration and initial stress fields that are almost always preexistent in rock masses at great depths, render the problem intractable by analytical methods. Approximate solution techniques using numerical procedures have, therefore, to be resorted to. The finite element method as applied to plane stress analysis was introduced by Clough.1 It has developed into a powerful tool for the analysis of various field problems in structural and continuum mechanics. The method is well documented in the literature2-6 and, therefore, its historical development will not be discussed here. Wilson's analysis of the plane stress/strain problem has found extensive use in the area of soil and rock mechanics including stresses around underground openings; stresses and displacements in dams, foundations, etc.7-11 In his analysis of the axisymmetric solid,3 Wilson proposed a procedure to allow for certain cases of nonlinear material properties. DURING the last half century a great amount, of ingenuity and energy has been devoted to the invention of appliances for the recovery of valuable minerals from very fine sands and-slimes. The reason for this is that in almost every, dressing plant the greatest losses of values, considered relatively as well as absolutely, occur in the treatment of slimes. The natural aim of mill operators to minimize these losses has in recent years received another impetus,, from the fact that the gradually diminishing occurrence of high-grade ores makes a more intense recovery of values from existing resources absolutely necessary for profitable operation. The results of such attempts are found in the appearance of a great number of machines and appliances which make it profitable to-day to rework old dumps, containing the tailings of older processes. A constantly growing difficulty of obtaining skilled labor and the increase in wages made it prohibitory to employ those types of machines which required much attention, and in the middle of the nineteenth century the various concentrating tables of the percussion type, which automatically discharge their products, began to take the .place of the intermittent tables, on which, when the bed had reached a certain thickness, operation had to be stopped in order to allow the skimming by hand of the separate layers formed on the table. In the course of. years, two general types of machines evolved for the treatment of fine sands and slimes :- The so-called concentrators and vanners, on the one hand, and the huddles and round tables on . the other.1 For the profitable treatment of the very finest slimes, round tables have as a last resort proved more satisfactory and economical than other machines.

If confronted with the problem of pumping a mixture of slime-free sand, gravel and boulders up to six in. in diameter, at the rate of 175 tons per hr in one single-stage pump against a static head of 90 ft and a total head of 140 ft, of which 20 is on the suction side, an engineer might be forgiven for backing away from the job, especially if he were also told that the pump wearing parts must have a minimum hardness of 550 Brine11 for the sake of abrasion resistance. Yet precisely that feat has been accomplished in the gravel pit of John B. LaGarde, Inc., near Anniston, Ala. The pump used is of decidedly novel design and its successful operation since installation 1.5 years ago suggests that it may be of timely interest in numerous other applications in the mining industry, such as pump transportation of coal washer refuse or rock from open-pit's without unduly fine crushing.

MOST investigators are aware of the present unsatisfactory investigatorsstate of information concerning the fundamentals of crushing and grinding. Considerable scattered empirical data exist, which andare useful for predicting machine performance and give acceptable accuracy when the installations and materials compared are quite similar. However, there is no widely accepted unifying principle or theory that can explain satisfactorily the actual energy input necessary canexplain commercial installations, or can greatly extend the range of empirical comparisons. Two mutually contradictory theories have long existed in the literature, the Rittinger and Kick. They were derived from different viewpoints and logically lead to different results. The Rittinger theory is the older and more widely accepted.'TheRittinger In its first form, as stated by P. R. Ritted.'tinger, it postulates that the useful work done in crushing and grinding is directly proportional to the new surface area produced and hence inversely proportional to the product diameter. In its second form it has been amplified and enlarged to include the concept of surface energy; in this form it was precisely stated by A. M. Gaudin' as follows: "The efficiency of a comminution operation is the ratio of the surface energy produced to the kinetic energy expended." According to the theory in its second form, measurements of the surface areas of the feed and product and determinations of the surface energy per unit of new surface area produced give the useful work accomplished. Computations using the best values of surface energy obtainable indicate that perhaps 99 pct of the work input in crushing and grinding is wasted. However, no method of comminution has yet been devised which results in a reasonably high mechanical efficiency under this definition. Laboratory tests have been reported- hat support the theory in its first form by indicating that the new surface produced in different grinds is proportional to the work input. However, most of these tests employ an unnatural feed consisting either of screened particles of one sieve size or a scalped feed which has had the fines removed. In these cases the proportion of work done on the finer product particles is greatly increased and distorted beyond that to be expected with a normal feed containing the natural fines. Tests on pure crystallized quartz are likely to be misleading, since it does not follow the regular breakage pattern of most materials but is regularrelativelybreakage harder to grind patternat the finer sizes, as will be shown later. This theory appears to be indefensible mathematically, since work is the product of force multiplied by distance, and the distance factor (particle deformation before breakage) is ignored. The Kick theory4 is based primarily upon the stress-strain diagram of cubes under compression, or the deformation factor. It states that the work required is proportional to the reduction in volume of the particles concerned. Where F represents the diameter of the feed particles and P is the diameter of the product particles, the reduction ratio Rr is F/P, and according to Kick the work input required for reduction to different sizes is proportional to log Rr /log 2." The Kick theory is mathematically more tenable than the Rittinger when cubes under compression are considered, but it obviously fails to assign a sufficient proportion of the total work in reduction to the production of fine particles. According to the Rittinger theory as demonstrated by the theoretical breakage of cubes the new surface produced, and consequently the useful work input, is proportional to Rr-l.V f a given reduction takes place in two or more stages, the overall reduction ratio is the product of the Rr values for each stage, and the sum of the work accomplished in all stages is proportional to the sum of each Rr-1 value multiplied by the relative surface area before each reduction stage. It appears that neither the Rittinger theory, which is concerned only with surface, nor the Kick theory, which is concerned only with volume, can be completely correct. Crushing and grinding are concerned both with surface and volume; the absorption of evenly applied stresses is proportional to the volume concerned, but breakage starts with a crack tip, usually on the surface, and the concentration of stresses on the surface motivates the formation of the crack tips. The evaluation of grinding results in terms of surface tons per kw-hr, based upon screen analysis, involves an assumption of the surface area of the subsieve product, which may cause important errors. The evaluation in terms of kw-hr per net ton of —200 mesh produced often leads to erroneous results when grinds of appreciably different fineness are compared, since the amount of —200 mesh material produced varies with the size distribution characteristics of the feed. This paper is concerned primarily with the development, proof, and application of a new Third Theory, which should eliminate the objections to the two old theories and serve as a practical unifying principle for comminution in all size ranges. Both of the old theories have been remarkably barren of practical results when applied to actual crushing and grinding installations. The need for a new satisfactory theory is more acute than those not directly concerned with crushing and grinding calculations can realize. In developing a new theory it is first necessary to re-examine critically the assumptions underlying

The effect of poisoning on the behavior of platinum electrodes in redox potential measurements in metallurgical systems was studied in the presence of such inorganic surfactants as cyanide and sulfide and such organic surfactants as dodecylammonium acetate, trimethyldodecylammonium chloride, potassium ethyl xanthate, and potassium diethyl dithiophosphate (Aerofloat®). These chemical species represent, more or less, typical constituents encountered in leaching, flotation, and sewage treatment systems. Triangular wave voltammetry was used as the experimental technique to study the nature of poisoned surfaces. Among the species studied hydrogen sulfide and dodecylamine were found to form a resistant surface film affecting charge transfer. Platinum electrodes appeared to have a weaker tendency to adsorb sulfide species in alkaline pH ranges, while cyanide, xanthate, and dithiophosphate affected the normal electrode behavior differently. Possible methods of reactivation of a poisoned electrode by mechanical cleaning are suggested.

The solubility of tantalum at 1100°C is 0.025 pct in pure copper, 1.2 pct with 20 pct Ni, and 2.7 pct with -30 pct Ni. The solubility decreases with temperature, and the alloys are precipitation hardenable. A 79/20/1 Cu-Ni-Ta alloy reaches maximum hardness after aging at about 750°C and, if cold worked, does not recrystal-lize below that temperature. The alloys have good tensile properties at moderately elevated temperatures and, since they can be hot and cold worked nearly as easily as cupronickel, they are suggested for service at temperatures above the usual limits for copper alloys. MASSIVE tantalum dissolves extremely slowly in copper-rich alloys, and tantalum powder forms refractory surface layers which prevent its solution unless special precautions are taken. After many trials, an 80 pit recovery was consistently obtained by using a mixture of a finely divided tantalum powder with two or three times its volume of potassium tantalum fluoride (K2TaF1,-melting point about 750°C) poured in a slow stream directly on to the surface of the molten copper alloy, so that each particle would remain coated with flux and be immediately and individually wetted by the molten metal. A 50-50 nickel-tantalum alloy has a melting point of about 1400°C and small lumps of it slowly but satisfactorily dissolve in molten copper-nickel alloys as does commerical "ferro-tantalum." The high affinity of tantalum for carbon makes it necessary to avoid carbonaceous crucibles. COPPER-TANTALUM ALLOYS Castings with good shrinkage resulted when 0.1 pct Ta or more was added to copper melted under charcoal and cast in air. Copper in two-pound melts to which 0.1, 0.15, and 0.2 pct Ta had been added retained residual amounts, by analysis, of 0.025, 0.023 and 0.026 pct, respectively. The solubility of tantalum in molten copper at about 1200 °C is therefore about 0.025 pct. The electrical conductivity of these three samples was 100.48, 100.00 and 100.20 pct IACS in the annealed condition, and 98.24, 97.98 and 98.08 in the cold-drawn condition. Wires 0.080 in. in diam withstood from thirteen to nineteen reversed bends after annealing for 30 min in hydrogen at 850°C and the metal was therefore completely deoxidized. The annealing temperature corresponding to 50 pct loss of work hardness in 1 hr in a strip cold rolled 77 pct reduction was 175C, compared to 230°C for equivalent undeoxidized material. It is unusual for a decrease of recrystallization temperature to result from an alloying addition, and the tantalum probably combines with and removes some minor impurity in the original copper that restrained its recrystalliza- tion. No difficulty whatever was encountered in hot or cold rolling or drawing these ingots, and were tantalum not so expensive it would make an excellent deoxidizer for copper. COPPER-NIcKEL-TANTALUM ALLOYS Studies were made of the solubility of tantalum in a large number of copper-rich alloys, but of these significant solubilities were found only in the case of an iron alloy (which, however, separated into two immiscible liquid layers) and alloys of copper and nickel, in which tantalum is freely soluble and which were found to have interesting properties. The latter alloys are the subject of U. S. Patent No. 2,430,306 (1947). They are not at present available commercially. The Ternary Constitution Diagram—The copper-rich corner of the constitution diagram was constructed on the basis of microscopic examination of samples of various composition and treatments. The alloys were hot rolled to 0.25 in. from castings 0.625 in. thick, then annealed for 1 hr at 1000°C, quenched, cold rolled to 0.10 in. and finally annealed for various periods of time at temperatures between 800" and 1100°C in a nonoxidizing atmosphere and quenched. Digital simulation is defined and simulation techniques are re- viewed. Typical methodology involves the selection of models, the adjustment of raw data, the selection of a fitting strategy, the assessment of model accuracy in a statistical sense, and the development of an executive simulation structure. Simulations serve as aids for process engineers in evaluating the feasibility of a proposed flowsheet and the effect of a modification to an existing flowsheet. In addition, simulation plays an important role in off-line optimization and in the evaluation of alternative circuit control strategies. Several examples are presented to illustrate these uses for simulation including applications in crushing circuits, grinding circuits, and flotation circuits. It is the opinion of the authors that, within the next decade, mineral processing plants will be studied routinely via digital simulation during the preliminary design stage. Simulation will constitute an important component of the design decision making process.

THE meeting of the Petroleum Division at the Annual Meeting of the Institute maintained the high standard set in previous years, and attendance of member: of the Division was at a new high. The impact of the war was evident not only in the tone of many of die papers but also in the presence at the meeting of many of our members now serving in the armed forces of our-country. Ken interest was manifested in all papers presented and the discussions which followed developed many additional facts of interist and importance. The first activity of the Division was the joint meeting of the Papers and Programs and the Publications Committees on Monday afternoon; at which time definite plans were formulated for a simplification and co-ordination of the work of the committees.

THE record of the development of physical metallurgy since the founding of this Institute embraces by far the greater part of physical metallurgy as this subject is recognized today. Yet it is not to be supposed that the metallurgist interested in the properties and behavior of solid metals at the beginning of this period was without important and even fundamental information. He had an empirical knowledge of the behavior of solid metals which extended backward into prehistoric times and he had the early beginnings of many of the chapters in the science of metals. Industry was burgeoning in many directions, for methods had been developed, especially in the manufacture of steel that provided materials in extremely large tonnages, permitting applications of metallic materials on a very widespread scale. These multitudinous new uses of metals created an increased interest in the behavior of metals, and provided the basis for the rapid development of a science of metals. Indeed, the development of science generally that accompanied the industrial revolution reached a flood tide toward the end of the century, furnishing the metallurgist basic principles in chemistry, physics, mechanics, and crystallography that would shortly be extensively applied to metallic behavior. In this account, the early developments in the wide metallurgical field will be traced, in order that the status of physical metallurgy in 1871, when this Institute was founded, may be clearly seen. The subject of metallurgy in antiquity has been written upon frequently and at length. We shall here no more than indicate the main features that we need to define the position in 1871 and to provide a proper background for discussing subsequent developments. The influence of the collector structure on the amine (RNH2, R=alkyl) flotation of quartz has been systematically investigated using a modified Hallimond microflotation cell. This study focuses on the effect of varying chain length, branching in the alkyl group R, polyfunctionality of the collector molecule, and alkyl substitution on the nitrogen atom. In addition, adsorption at the solution/air interface and electrokinetic results for the solid/solution interface were employed to further elucidate the role ad the interrelation of the structural parameters in the flotation process. Both centrifugal and reciprocating-type pumps have been widely used in the transport of slurries. Although with some limitations, centrifugal pumps may be used, especially for short-haul systems, however, for the long pipelines the reciprocating pumps are better suited. A state-of-the-art review is presented in which a discussion of applications is made and some of the problems associated with meeting the proper design conditions for satisfactory service are discussed. Several developments underway give considerable promise of better pumps in the future, although the current level of development provides for an economical means to move slurries. The movement of liquids in pipelines necessarily occasions the use of pumps. The petroleum industry is familiar with the transport of solids through mud pumps and cementing and fracturing pumps where the movement of slurries is an everyday matter. In the drilling of an oil well, the circulating fluid utilized to remove drill cuttings is called drilling mud. This substance is usually a fairly sophisticated material designed to develop certain characteristics desirable in the drilling process. The cuttings are suspended in a moving column of this fluid and brought to the surface. The separation of the cuttings from the drilling fluids is accomplished by the use of shaker screens and settling pits; however, it is impractical to remove the cuttings completely and as a result they are pumped through the mud pumps back into the circulating stream. Over the years, mud pumps have been improved so that rather long life can be obtained from liquid end parts subject to the attritional effects of the abrasive-laden fluid. It is from this background that reciprocating-type slurry pumps have been developed. Centrifugal Pumps Centrifugal pumps have also been used to transport solids, where low heads are required, typically up to 200 ft or so, and for short hauls. The centrifugal pump is a hydrokinetic device wherein the increase in velocity of a fluid stream is converted to head, and to achieve high heads a large change in velocity is necessary. Abrasive laden fluids cause wear on impellers and casings as a result of erosion by the fluid and the suspended particles. Centrifugal pumps, therefore, can only be used where the internal velocity of flow is rela- tively low. The advantage of centrifugal pumps is their high capacity at relatively low capital cost and usually relatively small space requirement. One of the disadvantages of the centrifugal pump when used in slurry pipelining can be seen in its typical pressure-volume performance relationship, which tends to work against the application (see Fig. I). If an increase in pressure (head) is occasioned by flow restrictions in the pipeline, say by the dropping out of solids, a desirable characteristic of a slurry pump would be that it develop increased pressure to overcome the restriction. The centrifugal pump provides the increased pressure only at the expense of considerably reduced volume which then results in a lower flow velocity. With the reduced flow rate, adequate velocity to hold the material in suspension and keep it flowing in the line might not be achieved. If centrifugal pumps are considerd for the movement of solids in a long line, a series of pumps must be staged in order to provide the necessary motivating force. A large number of pumps in the line would be required, since each of the pumps could provide only a small pressure increment. An equal number of standby pumps
