Mine, mill, and smelter wastes aggregating billions of tons are scattered across the country as unattractive barren piles that mar the natural beauty of the land. As the population of the United States increases and the demand for land intensifies, populous centers are slowly encroaching on these formerly isolated wastes. Encroachment sharply intensifies the importance of controlling the air and water pollution derived from natural weathering of such wastes. Use or stabilization of these wastes comprises the only viable means for minimizing pollution. Utilization is preferable to stabilization, because full use would both eliminate the waste and broaden the mineral resource base. However, the wastes typically comprise immense tonnages of materials discarded by selective mining or after recovering the significant mineral values by milling and/or smelting. Only rarely can such low-grade material be reprocessed to extract additional minerals at a profit. Some mineral wastes are suitable for disposal as mine fill, railroad and highway road ballast, and land fill. Similarly, some mineral wastes can be utilized as raw materials for making brick, rock wool, concrete, and ceramic products. Several means exist for stabilization of relatively fine-sized wastes, which constitute the chief sources of air and water pollution. These include physical, chemical, and vegetative stabilization, and combinations thereof. Massive coverings of coarse slag, concrete, and soil may be used to prevent erosion of waste piles. A variety of chemicals can be used to bond the particles of fine-size waste into a relatively inert mass. However, the most promising method of producing an esthetically appealing storage site is vegetative stabilization. Numerous species of plants can germinate, grow, and reseed in waste materials which have been adequately prepared to support plant life.

THE venerable problem of hydrogen embrittlement of ferritic iron lacks as yet a complete explanation. Possibly part of the difficulty has been the exclusive preoccupation with the total ductility prior to fracture. In the past few years it has been noted at least twice1,2 that hydrogen charged into iron has the ability to depress the upper yield point and, at room temperature, to eliminate completely the discontinuous yield phenomenon. Cracknell and Petchl rationalize that the depression of the yield stress is an example of the behavior of inhomogeneous stresses. Their explanation requires that microcracks exist in the annealed metal, and that hydrogen collect in these cavities under high hydrostatic pressure. The hydrostatic pressure of hydrogen generates localized tensile stresses in the iron which, with external loading, reach the critical stress for yield prematurely. The local plastic zones will spread across the specimen before the Lüders bands can be generated, and the yield-point elongation phenomenon is eliminated. This viewpoint will be discussed in succeeding paragraphs. In order to obtain data on the thermal effect of the blast-furnace jacket and on the water consumption in these jackets a series of tests were run on the 56 by 180 in. blast furnaces at the Great Falls Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co., at Great Falls, Mont. The arrangement of the jacket is shown in the transverse section of one of the furnaces (Fig. 1) on which the tests were made. The nose, spout, and breast jackets have independent water supplies and discharges. The end and side jackets are connected in pairs, as regards water supply, the feed water entering at the bottom of the lower jacket and overflowing into the bottom of the jacket immediately above it, and discharging into an independent overflow pipe for each pair of jackets. Tests were run on the main side and end jackets, the breast jacket, the spout, and the nose. Measurements were taken of the quantity of water discharged per minute and the rise in temperature of the water in its passage through the jacket. The product of these two results, expressed in the proper units, evidently gives the number of units of heat removed per minute by the water. Sufficient work was done on each type of jacket to determine its behavior under different conditions, and the results from each set of conditions were checked by repeating the work from three to six times. The method used was as follows: The overflow from the jacket to be tested was arranged to discharge at will into a barrel, mounted upon platform scales. The discharge temperature was read just before turning the water into the barrel, and just before turning it back to the sluice; if the test lasted more than a minute, additional temperature readings were taken at 1-min. intervals from start to finish. The student of steelmaking is all too well acquainted with the fact that in many instances he must deal with data that in graphical representation exhibit the property most desirable in bird shot. This is scarcely mystifying, since the effort to establish one variable as a function of another is usually hampered by the simultaneous operativeness of two or three other factors that may be important. A large part of arriving at relationships that have the pleasing self-consistency of, say, precise measurements of thermal expansion, consists of determining what factors must be held constant-—an even larger part usually consists of collecting data for which those factors have been so maintained. It is not intended to imply that functional relationships in the physical chemistry of steelmaking are hopelessly obscure; on the contrary, it is merely necessary to be undisturbed by marked deviation of some points from a curve that otherwise makes sense. A reaction mechanism suggested by such a curve may call attention to hitherto unsuspected factors operative in the origin of the deviating points, and thus permit another step to be taken in the direction of fuller understanding. It is proposed, therefore, to suggest several empirical relationships. Even though the approach is not always rigorous, deviations caused by simplifying assumptions appear to be too small to obscure a provisional It has been appreciated for some time that the carbon-oxygen reaction in liquid steel is highly important. For example, Körber et al.,' in introducing a summary of their extensive work on steelmaking reactions, said: "... the far-reaching and truly dominating action of carbon upon the metallurgical reactions will be especially stressed ..." In "Basic Open Hearth Steelmaking"2 (hereafter BOHS, for simplicity), it is accepted repeatedly that the various slag-metal interactions are nearly always controlled by the carbon-oxygen reaction. Before further discussion of this reaction, however, it will be worth while to consider briefly the carbon-oxygen equilibrium. In BOHS (p. 483) it is stated that: When liquid iron is brought into contact with gases containing carbon monoxide it absorhs carbon and oxygen. Conversely the carbon and oxygen in the metal unite to form carbon monoxide which is evolved from the bath during the open-hearth boil or while rimming ingots are solidifying. . . . When the equilibrium pressure is one atmosphere the equilibrium-constant equation simplifies, on the assumption that the activity of each element is equal to its percentage, to a constant which has been so much used that it has acquired a special symbol m. where m = %C X %O

THE Tri-State field is now believed to be the largest zinc district in the world. It has a potential production sufficient to supply the entire zinc demands of the country. It is estimated that a train 70 miles long would be required to haul the district's 1919 output of 60 per cent. zinc concentrates. For many years,, including 1917, Missouri surpassed Oklahoma in zinc production. In 1918, however, Oklahoma led by a wide margin and, in 1919, Missouri produced less than one-sixth of the total for the three states, when Kansas replaced Missouri in second place in the production. The district is now producing one-third of the zinc of the world and twice as much as ever before at the present price.

Freeman, the English historian, said that he had learned from Macaulay "never to be afraid of using the same word or name over and over again if by that means anything could be added to clearness or force. Macaulay never goes on, like some writers, talking about `the former' and `the latter', `he', `she', `it', and `they', through !clause after clause, while his reader has to look back to see which of several persons it is that is so darkly referred to". He might have learned also from Macaulay that a preposition makes a' feeble ending for a serious statement. How often do you hear `the former' and `the latter' in conversation? Good conversation is a guide not to be dis¬dained. When you must use `the latter', do not confuse it with `the last'. Cheap labor, cheap fuel, and cheap transport are essential, the latter [last] being particularly important in base-metal mining. The apparatus may be used to determine such gases as hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, oxides of nitrogen and some others, as well as sulphur dioxide. In the case of the latter two, etc. The two last mentioned are "sulphur dioxide" and "some others". He should have stated which two, and he should have avoided that wretched phrase "in the case of ". Pinning may be partly prevented by use of chalk, oil, or turpentine. The latter [last] is best. I "Partly prevented" is a poor phrase. `Prevented! is a word that does not lend itself readily to modification. He means `checked' or `corrected'.

(communication to the Secretary) : Mr. Firmstone's paper is of great interest; but he has unfortunately otnitted to state the most important point, viz., the percentage of sulphur in the two materials he compares; and this omission vitiates the conclusions which he draws. Comparing by grade, instead of silicon-contents (as in his Table III.), the iron made using limestone with that made using dolomite, we find for gray-forge the average of four analyses under limestone to be, Si, 0.644; S, 0.089 ; while one analysis under dolomite gives Si, 0.508 ; S, 0.070. For No. 2 iron, the limestone flux gives, as an average of 19 analyses, Si, 1.107; S, 0.051; while the average of 4 analyses made with dolomite flux gives Si, 0.630; S, 0.056. It will be observed, that no No. 1 pig is given under limestone, while 14 analyses appear under dolomite, averaging Si, 0.950 ; S, 0.028. As nothing is said about changed conditions, it is Fair to presume that the ore and fuel, as well as the blast-temperature (which is stated to have been uniform at about 750' F.) remained practically the same; and since the sulphur in the two fluxes is not given, it is impossible to know whether the lower sulphur for equal silicon-contents is due to the use of dolomite or to other conditions. The use of dolomite would produce a more fusible cinder, and the furnace would be hotter than when using limestone; therefore, we might expect to see a grayer iron. The amount of So. 1 iron made with dolomite seems to confirm this supposition; and, under these conditions, we might expect more of the sulphur to be volatilized, and to pass off in the gases. The easier fusibility of the cinder would also permit more rapid driving; and this should reduce the amount of silicon and sulphur in the iron, as the amount of reduced metalloids in the pig is directly proportional to the length of time it remains in the reducing-zone.

The purpose of this paper is to present specific applications of the fundamental principles of mine ventilation and the means that are at our disposal to accomplish the task of maintaining a healthful atmosphere in small mines and prospect openings. Need for Ventilation The range between the maximum oxygen content of normal air and the minimum safe content is extremely narrow, approximately 5 per cent. Furthermore, normal air must not be contaminated with irrespirable gases beyond definite limits, and mineral dusts are equally dangerous, although health impairment is slower. Tables 1 and 2 present the more common respiratory hazards encountered in mines. Adequate ventilation is the most effective means available to reduce or eliminate these hazards. Mechanical ventilation has reached varying stages of perfection in coal mines and in many large metal mines. The small mines and prospects rarely have a definite plan of ventilation. As a consequence underground workers are frequently exposed to health and accident hazards. The annual reports of fatalities in mines in the Western States record yearly many deaths due to asphyxiation and deaths caused by men falling down shafts and raises after being overcome by gas. At times mining operations are slowed up because there is no means of driving out the gas after blasting. For that reason only one shift is worked, or men wait from one to several hours for the "smoke" to clear out. Methane gas in varying quantities is widely distributed throughout California. It has been encountered in explosive concentrations in the coast range. It has been found on the Mother Lode and in quicksilver mines near the coast. Methane explosions have not been uncommon in underground operations and in tunneling jobs. These conditions and records indicate that there is room for improvement in mine-air conditions.

Natural gas influences the movement of oil through reservoir rock by affecting the physical properties of the oil and the pressure within the reservoir. The presence of gas bubbles changes the laws of flow and the distribution of forces. The problem of flow of oil and gas through a porous rock is complex, and most authors, in order to analyze their problems, have found it necessary to make or accept certain generalized assumptions. Some of these assumptions, particularly the ones dealing with capillary phenomena and moleculnr forces, have not received sufficient attention and by lack of understanding have often been misinterpreted. Herold1 has called attention to the resistance offered by gas bubbles in capillary spaces and has drawn some interesting conclusions with regard to the action of natural gas in a reservoir rock. He has duplicated an experiment of the French physicist Jamin, has interpreted his findings in terms of molar mechanics, and, from experimental observations, has made a number of assumptions which he later applies in discussing problems of natural flow and recovery of oil. The Jamin action is an assumption because it lacks a physical proof and has never been determined quantitatively. Tickel12 attempts to develop a formula expressing the work performed by a distorted bubble. H. A. Wilson, in the recent publication of the American Petroleum Institute on the function of natural gas, discusses the phenomenon in terms of classical physics. Both contributions are incomplete and offer no experimental data. This paper includes a study of the static condition of equilibrium of gas and liquid bubbles confined to capillary spaces. In order to avoid any possible confusion, it is proposed to restrict the term "Jamin action"

COMBUSTION of coal and transfer of heat from flames and gases to boiler surfaces continue to be of great interest to engineers here and abroad. Numerous investigations have been in progress to improve furnace and boiler performance and economy. The importance of better understanding of the processes and opportunities for improvement is apparent when it is remembered that heat from at least 500 million tons of coal a year the world over is being transferred to boiler water at efficiencies ranging mostly between 50 and 90 pct. Even slight gains in efficiency, economy, and labor saving become very significant when multiplied by the enormous quantity of fuel consumed. Also the competitive position of the large coal, oil, and gas industries in satisfying the fuel consumers is greatly affected by the achievements made through technical progress with each fuel. This paper is part of a continuing activity of Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., to extend the knowledge of coal utilization for steam generation and to seek promising directions for future research and development in cooperation with others. Particularly in the latter regard, numerous interviews were held during the last three years to seek the experience and advice of boiler and combustion- equipment manufacturers, electric-utility executives, and fuel engineers. A wealth of published information was also reviewed, which together with the interviews pointed to the advisability of further work on ash and sulphur control.

(San Francisco Meeting, October, 1911.) LIME is the alkali that is almost universally added to the solutions in the cyanide process of gold- and silver-extraction for maintaining the so-called, protective" alkalinity. It is produced by the burning of limestone. The value of lime for this purpose depends upon the percentage of calcium oxide contained, which is determined by three factors : 1, purity of the limestone used; 2, degree of the burning-temperature and the period of burning; and 3, length of time of storage of burned material and the condition stored, and whether it has been damp or wet during the storage. These three factors render uncertain the quality of lime bought in the open market. In the United States, lime bought from reliable manufacturers, who thoroughly burn a pure limestone and deliver at once to the consumer from the kilns, may be of a fairly-high and uniform composition ; but in Mexico and Central America, where it is purchased from many small producers, who often start with a poor grade of limestone and burn it in small crude kilns with as little fuel as possible, the quality of the product is quite variable. In consideration of the foregoing, it is apparent at once that there is a great need for a rapid technical method for the valuation of the lime to be used in a cyanide-plant. The determination of calcium by the gravimetric method, with the necessity of determining also the proportion of carbon dioxide, silica, and iron, requires too much time, and is usually out of the question for an isolated plant unequipped with a skilled chemist and, the necessary apparatus. The calculating of all the calcium so found to calcium oxide, although sometimes done, is manifestly very inaccurate.

The South Texas area, discussed herein, represents districts 2 and 4 of the Texas Railroad Cominission and extends from Jackson, Lavaca, and Gonzales Counties on the northeast to the Rio Grande River, comprising a total of 26 counties.$ The present boundaries of this district do not coincide with those of earlier reports published in the annual volumes of Petroleum Development and Technology. The war, in its various ramifications, determined and controlled all the phases of the oil and gas industry. Priorities for material and governmental subsidies determined all new operations. New Pools In our opinion, the combine' quantity of crude and distillate reserves added in '943 approached Or possibly exceeded the amount produced. Thirty-five new pools were added to the area' Of these, five have significant reserves and ten offer possibilities of containing consequential reserves. The largest proven reserve discovered during the year was the Slick pool, on the DeWitt-Goliad County line. This is also the most important Wilcox discovery to date in the area. The most significant extension was at Willimar, Willacy County. Other important extensions were developed at Agua Dulce, Seeligson, and Odem. Except for the Porter field, in Karnes County, the Laredo trend, which produces lrom the Jackson and Yegua, proved very disappointing, and this pool is o:C secondary importance. The Scott and Hopper pool, Brooks County, has only orie well, but offers excellent possibilities of becoming an important discovery. It represents at this time the major Frio discovery of the year. The Hobson pool, Karnes County, is not a major reserve, but can be classed as important in that it produces at a shallow depth from the Wilcox. This proves that the potential area of production for this zone occupies a broad trend. Gas and Condensate During the year construction was begun on only one recycling plant, this being in the Sejita field, Duval County. Several others were colltemplated, but no actual operations were begun. The most important development in recycling was the rebuilding of old plants to allow for the fractiona-tion of isopentane, n-butane, isobutane, and propane. Heretofore all pentanes plus have been marketed as cLdistillate,n only a minor portion of the butanes being isolated and sold for fuel purposes. All these new the except propane, are considered vital to the war effort and propane is being marketed as fuel gas. In other instances propane is being isolated and then pumped back into the gas reservoirs for storage. It is anticipated that the demands for this product will increase in the future. Recent developments in iron alloys containing nitrogen have indicated that this element may exert a considerable influence on the properties of the metal. This influence is not always in an undesirable direction and the indications are that nitrogen should be regarded as an alloying element, the amount of which should be subject to control, rather than as an inherently deleterious impurity. In controlling this element in liquid iron to the best advantage, it is necessary to have a reliable background of fundamental data pertaining to solubilities, rates of solution and chemical reactions of nitrogen in liquid iron. Obviously, the first step in such an investigation is the determination of the solubility of nitrogen in pure iron, and this has been the object of the experiments described in this paper. The solubility of nitrogen in solid iron has been measured by Jurich,' Sieverts,2 Martin,3 and Iwasé4 and the agreement among the first three inspires confidence in their results. No accurate determinations of its solubility in liquid iron have been recorded though several investigators have obtained approximate results. Being on a visit to your great and prosperous country, and having been favored with an invitation to attend this meeting of your Institute, the author has been requested by your Secretary to give a short account of his invention of the " soaking-pit," which he has great pleasure in doing. The object of the soaking-pit is the rolling of steel ingots with their own initial heat, that is, to supply the missing link in that chain of metallurgical operations which Sir Henry Bessemer began in 1857, when he proved how it was possible to produce malleable iron or steel direct from the fluid cast-iron out of the blast-furnace, without any further direct use of fuel. The great Bessemer invention has revolutionized iron and steelmaking throughout the world; but it stopped short at producing the ingot, which, it was found, had afterwards to be heated in a furnace to enable it to be rolled or hammered; and it is only lately, twenty-five years after Mr. Bessemer's announcement, that the author of this paper has been able to show that furnacing can be dispensed with, and that it is practicable to roll a steel ingot into say a bloom, a rail, or a billet, with its own initial heat. It has no doubt suggested itself to many that there ought to be heat enough in the ingot just cast, for the purpose of rolling; and from time to time attempts have been made to utilize this heat; but such attempts always ending in failure, it became a settled opinion in the trade that it could not be done—an opinion which the author is aware that your late lamented countryman, Mr. Holley, than whom there was none more conversant with Bessemer steel-making, also entertained. But settled opinions sometimes prove to be great fallacies. As an instance, it is not many years since the opinion prevailed in the trade that steel ingots could not be rolled successfully, that is, so as to make good rails, unless they were first allowed to get quite cold, and afterwards heated. This paper briefly describes the general outline of cyaniding silver-ores in Mexico, with special reference to personal experiments made in the Temascaltepec district. The most important papers on the subject deal with cyaniding gold-silver ores, the gold predominating in value, so that the treatment is nearly the same as for gold-ores, the losses of silver being considered of little importance. I describe here the treatment of silver-gold ores containing very little gold, which is more general in Mexico than elsewhere. The cyanide treatment, which was so successfully applied to gold-ores, did not succeed immediately with silver-ores on account of their varying composition. Gold occurs in nature usually in the native state, while silver occurs generally in combination with sulphur (argentite), and various combinations of sulphur, antimony, and arsenic. In former times there mas a complete difference in the treatment of gold-ores and silver-ores. Amalgamation, which was successful with gold-ores, was generally inadequate with silver-ores. The usual treatment in Mexico for silver was the patio process, the theory of which was satisfactorily explained only quite recently by Mr. Ortega and others. General Outline of the Cyanide Treatment. The general tendency of the present practice is to slime the silver-ore as much as possible, and in order to obtain a higher efficiency, with less loss of cyanide, and greater speed, the following lines are observed: 1. Crushing by stamps with 30- or 40-mesh screens, then crushing by Huntington or Chilean mills, through 60- or 80-mesh screens. 2. Concentration upon vanners.

Although significant phosphate mining activity has occurred in four western states-Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Wyoming-southeastern Idaho contains the largest, most easily mineable reserves, and mining has focused there. More than half of the western phosphate field's economic reserves are within a 32 x 96-km (20 x 60-mile) rectangle bounded by Montpelier, Idaho, on the south, Soda Springs on the west, and Grays Lake on the east. A large amount of this land lies within the boundaries of the Caribou National Forest.

In a reservoir when gas comes out of solution and rises, additional pressure is created because of the change in position of this gar in the bounded volume. If this pressure effect is not taken into account as a pseudo-influx ill mate rial balance calculations on reservoirs in which there is evolving gas, an error is introduced that is directly proportional to the length of oil column and amount of gas evolved and inversely proportional to the reservoir pressure. In reservoirs with small oil column this pseudo-influx is of little importance. The larger the oil column the more important the effect becomes. The most important application, however, will be for reservoirs with declining pressure in which increasing water entry has been indicated by material balance calculations. It could be that this indication is the result of the cited pseudo-influx and not water entry at all. This paper attempts to explain this phenomenon in relation to material balance calculations and prevents an approximate method of determining tile pseudo-influx. INTRODUCTION Only recently has the pressure-volume relationship of gas rising in a liquid appeared in engineering literature, although its effect has been discussed for several years—especially among engineers engaged in drilling operations. The writer published a paper in 1957 in which this phenomenon was examined in relation to blowouts in drilling wells.' Also, in 1957 Stegemeier and Matthews' authored a paper in which the relationship was presented with respect to pressure build-up tests when shutting in producing wells. In this paper the effect will be called "pressure inversion" which is descriptive of the phenomenon. Fundamentally, the effect just mentioned is the result of changing the position of a quantity of energy contained within the gas itself (as a result of its compression) within the bounded volume in which the gas exists. If the gas were allowed to expand "beyond all bounds" there could be no pressure inversion effect. This is because all of the energy contained within the gas as a result of compression would have been re- PRESSURE INVERSION A phase that has not been discussed in the literature is the effect of pressure inversion upon material balance calculations in reservoirs in which the reservoir pressure drops with reservoir withdrawal and is below the bubble point. This action releases solution gas which, after the critical gas saturation has been reached, will tend to rise and collect at the top of the reservoir. The pseudo-influx caused by this effect could be great enough in reservoirs of large oil column and high permeability to render invalid any analyzer studies made on them — if pressure inversion has not been taken into account. Most suspect would be those reservoirs with large oil column in which increasing water entry has been predicted but the bottom wells have not yet produced water. Example 1 Simply stated, this phenomenon exists in oil reservoirs because of the difference in density and expansibility between gas and oil. For example, if a bubble of gas exists at the bottom of a 1,000-ft column of oil having a gradient of 0.30 psi/ft with the pressure at the top of the column zero, the bubble of gas will be compressed to a pressure of 300 psi. If temperature and the combined volume of the oil column and the gas bubble remain constant, as the gas bubble rises in the oil column it will have the same volume and consequently the same pressure at any point. Under these conditions when thc bubble reaches the top of the oil column, the pressure will be approximately 300 psi at the surface and approximately 600 psi at the bottom of the oil column. If it is assumed that the oil is incompressible the pressures will be exactly 300 and 600 psi, respectively.

The reactive metals are above manganese on the electromotive series. Their compounds are characterized by large heats of formation and they cannot be reduced from their ores by classical methods. Three general production methods have been used: a) Fused salt electrolysis, b) reduction of a halide by another metal, and c) reduction of the oxide by another metal. Method (a) is highly developed, as in the case of aluminum, (b) in the case of titanium, and (c) has been successful in the case of volatile metals such as magnesium and calcium. It is suggested that future improvements will take place in (a), and particularly in (c), but are rather less likely in the case of (b). THIS year of 1963 is the centennial of the birth of both Charles Hall and of Heroult, the founders of the aluminum industry. Aluminum is the one reactive metal which has reached massive stature in modern industry and perhaps the only such metal to have been produced in any quantity before the turn of the century. It has been joined by others, some on a very modest scale, but all of importance and all of fascinating interest. When invited to give the Fifth Extractive Metallurgy lecture, it seemed appropriate to look back upon the short history of this group to trace the developments which brought extraction methods to their present state and, at great risk, offer opinions as to future trends.
