Committee C-8 of the American Society for Testing and Materials defines refractories as "material, usually nonmetallic, used to withstand high temperature," and it defines the term refractoriness thus, "in refractories, the capability of maintaining the desired degree of chemical and physical identity at high temperatures and in the environment and conditions of use.” The ability to withstand high temperatures is critical to classifying a material as a refractory. However, as the foregoing definition of "refractoriness" implies, the refractory material may be subjected to and is expected to resist not only high temperatures but a variety of other destructive forces incidental to its use. These include abrasion, impact, thermal shock, chemical attack, and high level loads at high temperatures. The various industrial applications of refractories represent an infinite variety of combinations and degrees of severity of these destructive forces, including high temperatures. Naturally, such a variety of application conditions leads to a need for a wide variety of refractory products to satisfy those conditions. The number of refractory products available is great enough that some form of classification is necessary to a discussion of refractories. Refractories may be classified in several ways, but the most suitable one is based on their general compositions and to lesser degrees on their physical condition and distinctive properties. The primary types of brick include aluminosilicate brick (fire clay and alumina), basic brick (magnesia and chrome ore, alone and in various combinations), silica brick, insulating brick, and special refractories (carbon, SiC, ZrO2, zircon, borides, and nitrides). Brick is, of course, preformed and usually is heat treated at high temperatures before use, but in some instances is unburned and/or chemically bonded, including the relatively new class of tar-bonded magnesia and/or dolomite brick. In addition to preformed refractories, another broad category includes the so-called specialty refractories, which are usually made in the same types as itemized for brick-bonding mortars and high temperature cements, hydraulic setting castables or refractory concrete, plastic firebrick, and ramming mixes. Refractory grains, such as fire clay and high alumina calcines, dead-burned magnesite and periclase, and dead-burned dolomite are also considered refractory products. Bricks are also classified on the basis of physical dimensions, as standard sizes and special shapes. The standard sizes are those which are of definite shape and design and are designated as 228.6 x 114.3 x 63.5 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 2 ½ in.) and 228.6 x 114.3 x 76.2 mm (9 x 4 ½ x 3 in.) straights and series. Bricks of nonstandard sizes are referred to as special shapes. These come about as a result of a particular need for a given furnace or for a particular application. CHURN drilling equipment at Bagdad consists of two Bucyrus Erie 27-T model drills and one 22-T drill with gasoline engines. The drilling tools weigh approximately 1600 lb. The holes are drilled with 7-in. bits which are heated in an oil burning furnace and sharpened in an electrically powered bit sharpener. A service truck brings the bits to the drills and takes the dull bits back to the shop. The bits weigh around 250 lb. when new and are handled by drill crews without any mechanical handling device.

This paper presents results of an experimental investigation of factors that control the efficiency with which oil is displaced from porous media by a miscible fluid. The study was made to elucidate the relevant processes both on microscopic level (within individual or between neighboring pore spaces) and on macroscopic level (within a large sand body). Mixing of miscible fluids on the microscopic level was studied in sand-packed tubes. It was found that molecular diffusion is the dominant dispersion mechanism for reservoir conditions of rate, length and pore sizes. Macroscopic channeling was studied for various mobility ratios in reservoir mode1s scaled to relate viscous, gravitational, and diffusional forces. The formation of channels was due to viscous firzgering, gravity segregation and variations in permeability. With adverse mobility ratios, it was found for reservoirs of realistic widths that diffusion will not be effective in preventing the formation and growth of fingers, even in homogeneous sands. At sufficiently low rates channeling was eliminated by gravity segregation in tilted reservoirs. The dependence of recovery on mobility ratio, length-to-width ratio, flow rate and angle of dip is presented. INTRODUCTION Oil recovery by solvent flooding is finding increasing application in the field. While the process promises high recoveries from the region swept by solvent, under adverse conditions only a small fraction of the reservoir volume may be swept at the time solvent breaks through to the producing well. Further, the high cost of the solvent encourages its use only as a bank whose size must be kept at a minimum. Thus, two important questions arise: (1) what fraction of the reservoir can be swept, practically, by solvent? and (2) what is the minimum size solvent bank that can be used to carry out the displacement? The answers to these questions require knowledge of both macroscopic channeling processes and microscopic mixing processes. The studies described here were carried out to gain this knowledge. Microscopic mechanisms which cause mixing will be discussed first, because an understanding of these mechanisms is necessary for proper interpretation of the experimental work on channeling described later. INVESTIGATION OF MICROSCOPIC DISPLACEMENT PHENOMENA FOR MISCIBLE FLUIDS The questions to be resolved concerning microscopic displacement behavior are: (1) how much mixing occurs between oil and solvent in the direction of flow? and (2) does the solvent completely flush the oil from the pore spaces in the region invaded by solvent? The classic work of Sir Geoffrey Taylor' and its extension by Aris2 have shown that it is possible from theory to describe the amount of mixing in single straight capillaries when solvent displaces a fluid of equal viscosity and equal density. Aris showed that the lengths of the mixing zones, 81, corresponding to the 10 per cent and 90 per cent concentration levels of the solvent can be calculated from the formula, 81 = 3.62 \/Kt, .........(1) where 8l is the length of the mixing zone, cm; t is the time, sec; and K is the effective dispersion coefficient, cm2/sec, given by K/D = 1 + (1/48) (au/D)2......(2) where a is the radius of the capillary, cm; D is the molecular diffusivity, cm2/sec; u is the average velocity

THE problem of the influence of hot surfaces upon gaseous combustion is one which, from a purely scientific stand-point, has engaged, for many years past, the attention of Prof. William A. Bone, of Leeds University and the Imperial College, London; and as his recent work has been the direct outcome of earlier scientific investigation, it will be appropriate, by way of introduction, to review briefly the present position of science with respect to this important subject, as stated by Professor Bone. One may perhaps best arrive at an understanding of the term " ?flameless " or " surface " combustion by considering certain facts which differentiate it from the more familiar processes of combustion as they occur in ordinary flames. All hot surfaces have an accelerating influence upon chemical changes in gaseous systems. If, at any temperature, a gaseous system, A, tends to pass over into another system, B, contact with a solid at the same temperature will accelerate the process. To take a very simple example, if a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen in their combining proportions (electrolytic gas) were maintained in an inclosure with smooth glass walls at a temperature of, say, 450° C., there would certainly be a tendency to form steam, but the rate of change would be negligibly small. If, however, there were brought into the system some porous solid material at the same temperature, so that a large surface was exposed to the gases, the rate of change would at once be rapidly accelerated in the layer of gas immediately in contact with the hot surface. Steam, the product, would diffuse outward from the surface, and the supplies of hydrogen and oxygen at the surface would be renewed by diffusion inward. Thus combustion would proceed heterogene-

PETROLEUM'S importance in World War II can perhaps be better realized by the recitation of a few facts and figures: Gasoline needs in this war are already eighty times greater than in the last war. It takes nearly three pounds of gasoline to deliver one pound of bombs, filled with petroleum explosives, on an enemy objective. Every American soldier overseas requires an average of more than fifty gallons of petroleum products per week, with the oil used by Navy and supply ships and America's Allies boosting the consumption of oil per soldier to an even higher figure. Every oil well in the United States now must produce each day an average of four barrels of oil for war and combat jobs. More than fifty million gallons of gasoline, fuel oils, lubricants, and other petroleum products are now going directly to the fighting forces every day.

The Boston & Montana Reduction Works at Great Falls, Mont., was formerly the reduction works of the Boston & Montana Consolidated Copper & Silver Mining Co., and continued as the reduction plant for the independent company until June 1, 1910, when the consolidation of a large number of the operating companies of Butte was effected. It then became merged in the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. as the Boston & Montana Reduction Department of the Anaconda Copper Mining Co. The history of copper converting at this plant, while not covering the entire period of the commercial use of the process in this country, does cover by far the larger part of it, and as the operation of and appliances for the process have undergone many changes during the time, it may, perhaps, be of some interest to put the record of these changes into permanent form. The plan followed in the preparation of this paper has been to give first a brief chronological record of the principal events and changes and then, even at the risk of some repetitions, to give more detaild accounts of some of these changes under separate headings. THE idea of burning blast-furnace gases directly in gas-engines, instead of under steam-boilers, as had previously been done, was first put into practice barely ten years ago, almost simultaneously in Great Britain, Germany and Belgium. The pioneers of this movement made their first experiments with small engines. After these experiments had given satisfactory results, and it had been shown that the thermal value of the poor blast-furnace gases, in spite of defective scrubbing, could with safety be directly transformed into mechanical work in the gas-engine, there very soon arose a considerable demand for gas-engines of large power, similar to the large steam-engines employed in metallurgical works. In face of these sudden requirements, the gas-engine builders were placed in a difficult position; for up to that time the gas-motor was considered as suitable for small engines only, and it was generally believed that the limit of size bad been attained with 100 to 150 effective h.p. in a single cylinder. Manufacturers of gas-motors, however, did not underrate the advantages offered by this new field for their manufactures, and it so happened that in Germany the Berlin-Anhaltische Maschinenbau-Gesellschaft, of Dessau, was the first to undertake the construction of a 600-h.p. two-cycle gas-engine, with two cyl¬inders of the Oechelhäuser-Junkers type, for the Hoerder Mining & Smelting Company. The engine was started in 1898, and, with a few improvements and alterations, is still working satisfactorily. This engine worked with astonishingly high of efficiency, considering the period. The determination of suitable and safe annealing temperatures is one of the most important problems arising in the operation of a copper rolling mill. Certain of the larger mills have worked this problem out for themselves and in these mills the operation has become more or less standardized. In some of the mills pyrometers are used to measure the temperature of the annealing furnaces and careful watch is kept to see that overheating does not take place. In a considerable number of the mills, however, dependence is placed entirely on the judgment of the operator. The almost total lack of literature bearing on this subject seems sufficient warrant for the publication of this paper. ' The discussion of this subject naturally divides itself into two parts: (1) The effect of annealing temperature on physical properties; and (2) changes in the microstructure of refined copper due to cold rolling and annealing. I. The Effect of Annealing Temperature on Physical Properties For the purpose of investigating this phase of the subject six test bars were selected, varying in oxygen content between the limits of 0.036 and 0.070 per cent. Coal-cleaning plants using the launder process generally wash the fine coal (minus ? or minus 5/16-in.) separately in a plant consisting of washing launders or troughs placed one below another and sometimes supplemented by additional washing equipment such as tables and jigs. The coal and its associated impurities enter the feed end of the top launder, with a current of push water. As the material moves along the impurities, being heavier than coal, settle toward the bottom of the launder and are drawn off, with some coal, through "free discharge" boxes to the launder below. These boxes were given their name because their discharge falls freely; that is, it does not discharge into a water seal. Thus the impurities are progressively concentrated in the lower launders until box products are sufficiently free of coal to be discharged to refuse. The overflows of the upper launders go to clean coal while the overflow of the lowest launder, and perhaps that of the one immediately above, is usually recirculated to the plant feed. Thus the bulk of the clean coal is removed rapidly and the impurities are concentrated more slowly. The chief purpose of this paper is to present the cleaning data of such a plant under different operating conditions. OpeRating Equipment The washing units considered here are part of a complete plant cleaning minus 4-in. coal. The primary cleaned product is a high-quality gas and metallurgical coal and another portion of the output may be shipped as a steam coal. The units consist of two parallel Rheolaveur free-discharge units each containing five launders, together with three 7 by 14-ft. Plato tables. The launders are designated by the letters A-B-C-D-E (Fig. I), launder A being the top and longest; E being the bottom and shortest. Launder details are given in Table 1. INTRODUCTION Ideally, this paper should start by citing examples of slope failures in open pit mines during earthquakes. I do not know of any such examples, although - since my search of the literature has not been exhaustive - such examples may well exist. However, there certainly are many examples of devastating earthquake-induced landslides, and there is no reason why such landslides cannot occur at large open pits. Moreover, many of the actual earthquake-induced landslides have seriously affected mining operations in one way or another. Hence, this paper will treat earthquake-induced landslide phenomena in general, in the hope and expectation that the reader can apply this general knowledge to the specific problems associated with open pit mining. Ultimately, of course, the aim is to predict the likelihood of the occurrence of earthquake-induced landslides, and to delineate steps which can be taken to minimize the possibility of their occurrence. These aims can be achieved only imperfectly at the present time, for our knowledge concerning earthquake-induced landslides is still in an embryonic stage. Nonetheless, much useful knowledge does exist. In order to understand and apply this knowledge, it is necessary to: 1. Review the nature and extent of actual earthquake-induced landslides; 2. Have a grasp of the basic terminology and concepts of seismology; 3. Study the fundamentals of probability-based seismic risk analysis; 4. Appreciate the way in which earth materials behave during earthquake loadings; and 5. Have a general knowledge of the methods currently available for analyzing the dynamic response of slopes. Much of this paper is devoted to this necessary background. Information of practical use in connection with various classes of slope stability problems is assembled in the final sections. Although several recent papers have shown that equilibrium contact angle in dodecylamine solution-quartz systems can often be directly correlated with flotation behavior, it appears that under conditions of relatively high amine strength and pH such a correlation can't be made. Under these conditions, when there are precipitated amine dipoles present, it appears that a dynamic contact angle formed immediately after introduction of fresh gas bubbles into the system is also of importance. The dynamic angle decreases in magnitude as a function of time. Apparently the decrease is the result of changes in interfacial tensions (liquid-gas and solid-gas) as a function of time. Dynamic angles of the type described can't be observed in trimethyldodecylammonium chloride solution-quartz systems. Several recent papers1-3 have shown quite conclusively that contact angle data can often be correlated directly with flotation behavior in cationic surfactant solution-quartz systems. At the same time, Iwasaki, Cooke, and Colombo4 have shown data for a dodecylammonium chloride solution-goethite system where, in the vicinity of pH 12 and a collector concentration of 10" M, 100% flotation occurs when equilibrium contact angle appears to be zero. A clue to this discrepancy can be found in the work by smith2 who reported the occurrence of dynamic, time dependent, contact angles in a quartz-dodecyl-amine solution system at relatively high pH values and at surfactant concentrations greater than or equal to 10-4 M. It was found that under these conditions, if a fresh bubble was brought into contact with a properly conditioned and polished quartz surface, a large angle was obtained. The large angle, however, instantly started to diminish in magnitude, sometimes to a smaller stable angle and sometimes to its complete disappearance. Also, if the bubble was preconditioned for some minutes (or sometimes even seconds) in the same amine solution, the smaller or sometimes zero stable angle was obtained when the bubble was brought in contact with the quartz surface. One is immediately led to the thought that perhaps it is these dynamic angles when they exist, not stable angles, that are of primary importance in flotation. The Geophysics Education Committee was organized in 1938 and presented its first report at the A.I.M.E. annual meeting in February, 1939, at a session held jointly with the Committee on Geophysical Methods of Exploration. REPORT OF 1939 The first task the Committee set itself was to find out in which universities the subject of geophysics was being taught, and the manner in which such instruction was given. A questionnaire was drawn up and sent out to 147 universities in the United States, Canada, and abroad. Of these 100 replied. Their answers were then tabulated and analyzed, yielding the information summarized in the following pages. Two universities, Colorado School of Mines and St. Louis University, actually maintain departments of geophysics, while 3 Canadian and 31 American universities give courses on the subject. In other institutions, 45 in the United States and 5 in Canada, more or less extended reference is made to geophysics in lectures on other subjects. Altogether, there are at least 86 universities in the United States and Canada at which students may obtain instruction of some kind in geophysics. To enter the courses in geophysics given by 33 American universities, certain prerequisites are demanded, varying with the level at which the subject matter is treated. In analyzing the prerequisites, some assumptions had to be made: one year of college mathematics was taken to mean up to, but not including, calculus, while three years was presumed to embrace a course in differential equations. On this basis, 16 per cent require only elementary college mathematics, 40 per cent require differential and integral calculus, and 31 per cent require differential equations. A few demand even more advanced mathematics, while some list no prerequisite mathematics beyond high school. Evidently a student contemplating the study of geophysics should ground himself in calculus and differential equations. In physics, similar assumptions have been made as to time required in the subject. In treating a cast metal by any working process such as rolling, drawing or forging, variations in the conditions present in the remelting, casting, chilling and preheating of the initial ingot will certainly have some effect on the physical properties of the final product. In considering the effects of cold working on the physical properties of metals, however, it will be assumed that these factors, being controlled according to best practice, will remain constant and therefore may be neglected. Starting with such a uniform metal ingot, the next operation in the production of wrought metal involves hot working by rolling, forging or extrusion so as to produce a slab, billet or bloom. This working must be sufficient to produce substantial grain refinement and minimize any defects occurring in the initial ingot. Even such a hot-worked product is not suitable as a starting material for determining the effects of cold working because it contains internal strains analogous to those resulting from cold working. It is necessary, therefore, to supplement the hot working with a considerable amount of cold working, followed by a proper annealing in order to obtain a material suitable for use in defining the effects of cold working on the physical properties of a metal. That is, if the effects of cold working are to be evaluated accurately it is necessary to have other effects at least constant if not absent. Such material, unfortunately, cannot always be obtained in commercial practice but the requirements just indicated certainly represent the desired goal; this goal has been attained in the treatment of some metals, one being aluminum. Factors That Must Be Considered Simultaneously with Cold Working So many other factors affect the physical properties of a metal that it is necessary to consider these factors simultaneously with cold working; their effects vary in magnitude with the amount of cold work present. The most important of these factors are: (I) chemical composition, (2) structure, (3) temperature of working, (4) character of working, (5) rate of working, and (6) methods used for measuring results. Sulfur balances calculated from operating data covering thirty-five blast furnaces indicate that approximately 92 per cent. of the total sulfur charged enters with the coke, 7 per cent. with the ore, and 1 per cent. with the stone.. Most of the sulfur is carried from the furnace by means of the slag, the total amount eliminated being the product of the slag volume and the percentage of sulfur it contains. Additional sulfur in the charge must be eliminated either by increasing the percentage of sulfur in the slag or the quantity of slag. From relations found between slag volume and coke consumption and sulfur in the coke and slag volume, curves have been prepared showing the relative value of blast-furnace coke as its sulfur varies from 1 per cent. CHARCOAL was the predominant blast-furnace fuel until 1838, when it was found, by the operation of a 2-ton experimental furnace, that anthracite could also be used. This information was a stimulus to the iron industry, particularly in eastern Pennsylvania where anthracite was available at low cost. The production of anthracite pig iron increased steadily and, in 1855, its tonnage exceeded that of charcoal iron. Of the 680 furnaces in operation in 1874, the 226 using anthracite produced nearly one-half the total tonnage. In 1869, the production of coke furnaces exceeded that of charcoal furnaces and, in 1875, coke surpassed anthracite as a metallurgical fuel. In 1907, the output of anthracite pig dropped well below a million tons and its present significance is largely historical. In recent years, the production of coke has gone hand in hand with the production of pig iron and it has gradually attained the position it now occupies as a universal blast-furnace fuel. Charcoal, however, has great merit as a blast-furnace fuel chiefly because of its freedom from ash and sulfur. The harmful effect of the latter and the necessity of keeping the percentage of this element in pig iron at a minimum are well recognized. Other contaminating elements can be reduced to specified limits in the steelmaking process, but the control of sulfur belongs essentially to the blast furnace. THE necessity of adopting improved methods of bituminous-coal cleaning at. many collieries is recognized by all familiar with the requirements of the various bituminous markets, the approaching exhaustion of the relatively small areas of inherently high-grade-coal, and the difficulties encountered in maintaining a uniform grade of shipped coal. Many coals lose much of their .market value by degradation in size, and, in any event, if the cleaning process is to contemplate wetting the coal the minimum amount of fines should be produced to prevent sludge losses and the difficulties resulting from the moisture content of the wet fines. Hence, it is desirable to by-pass the finer coal dry, if this can be done without too-great increase in impurities in the final product. This procedure has given excellent results at washeries at Steelton and in the Birmingham district. If the raw fines are too impure to permit admixture with the washed coal, it may be desirable to use dry methods, such as the pneumatic table, rather than to wet an excessive amount of such fine material. The bituminous-coal cleaning plant should therefore: (1) Treat the raw coal in as large lump as possible and without sizing; (2) eliminate degradation of pure coal -in the washing process; (3) avoid wetting the fines, if possible; (4) produce washed coal practically free from mechanically included impurities; (5) crush the refuse and retreat, if much intergrown coal, and refuse are present, rather than precrush the entire feed. Ordinary gravimetric methods of concentration, whether hydraulic or pneumatic, will not meet all of these requirements, as the large lump includes those sizes. now sent to the picking tables, if it is desired to treat material of such size. I do not know of any prior commercial method, based on the falling velocity, coefficient of friction or resistance to fracture, that permits the production of clean coal varying in size from, say, 10-in. lump to 1/16 -in. mesh.

In my short " Contribution to the Early History of the Industry of Phosphate of Lime in the United States,"* mention is made of the erection by Dr. Emmons and myself of a magnetic machine for the removal of iron-ore from the so-called "red sand," a granular form of apatite. At the time of writing, it was not possible to refer to my diary and notes, and the general statements were made from recollection. The subject seems to have special interest at this time, by reason of the many forms of machines now being introduced and patented for similar purposes; and, having received letters of in quiry for further details, I have availed myself of the opportunity, when recently at home for a few days, to refer to the original notes and records made by me in 1852, when living at Crown Point and Moriah, on Lake Champlain. The machine mentioned in my former communication mas pur chased of Ransom Cook, of Vermont. It arrived, and was un loaded from the boat and taken part way up to the nine, on October 18,1852. The weight was 1400 pounds and the cost $1200. It was constructed, not with permanent magnets but with electro-mag nets. It was set up and first turned by hand on October 28th, using twelve battery-cups or cells, the connections being made with wires in small cups of quicksilver. The magnets were not sufficiently strong, and the machine did not work well. More batteries were sent for, arid the machine was started with steam-power on Novem ber 6th. The ore was dried in kilns, then put through a coffee-mill crusher or grinder, and then fed upon the leather belt which carried it under the magnets. Many experimental runs were made, and some diffi culties were overcome, before December 21st, when the record states that the machine was working pretty well, using 24 cells and giving a product of from 3 to 5 tons a day of granular phosphate.
