The experiments described in this publication were inspired by the Bell System's large interest in lead-alloy sheathed cables and by the wide range of fatigue and corroding conditions to which they are sometimes subjected in service. The first experiments consisted of operating specimens of lead + I per cent antimony telephone cable sheath alloy in a fatigue test while they were immersed in water taken from a manhole. Because of many published reports concerning corrosion-fatigue phenomena of various metals and alloys, a reduction in fatigue life was expected(1)2 Instead, however, the fatigue test ran on for many times the normal number of cycles an4 was finally stopped without failure. I AM indebted to The Kaolin Co. of West Cornwall, Conn., and particularly to its engineer, Mr. M. Wanner, for permission to make public, through the Transactions of the American Institute of Mining Engineers, the interesting results of his experiments, having in view the winning of kaolin from deep deposits without shaft-sinking or removing of the overburden. So far as I am aware, nothing like it has been accomplished heretofore, although it reminds one of the methods successfully employed in Louisiana for the winning of sulphur from deep beds by the sinking of pipes one within another, injecting superheated steam under pressure through one pipe, the heat of the steam liquefying the sulphur and the pressure forcing it up through the other pipe to bins at the surface. The kaolin-deposit at Nest Cornwall is an alteration in situ-that is, it is not sedimentary. A series of clay-veins dipping about 500 from the vertical, lie between a foot-wall of limonite and a hanging-wall of gneiss and hornblende schist. The clay-veins alternate with veins or seams of more or less broken quartz, and unaltered feldspar. The deposit, which occurs at a point about 600 ft. above the Housatonic river, was opened five years ago, and about 5,000 tons of a superior grade of washed kaolin has been extracted from open pits and sold. It soon became evident that this node of extracting the product would prove unremunerative, by reason of the dip of the vein and the intercalary strata and lenses of -quartz, and a more satisfactory method of working the deposit was sought. It is well understood, that, in the preparation of all clays for market, especially residuary kaolin, the most important as well as the most difficult step is the washing of the crude product. The Niobates (Columbates) and Tantalates are chiefly salts of metaniobic and metatantalic acid, RNb2O6 and RTa2O6; also in part Pyroniobates, R2Nb2O7, etc. Titanium is prominent in a number of the species, which are hence intermediate between the niobates and titanates. Niobium and tanta¬lum also enter into the composition of a few rare silicates, as wöhlerite, låvenite, etc. The following groups may be mentioned: The isometric PYROCHLORE GROUP, including pyrochlore, microlite, etc. The tetragonal FERGUSONITE Group, including fergusonite and sipylite. The orthorhombic COLUMBITE Group, including columbite and tantalite. Also the orthorhombic SAMARSKITE GROUP, including yttrotantalite, samarskite, and ånnerodite. The species belonging in this class are for the most part rare, and are hence but briefly described.

The temperature dependence of the free energies of formation of metallurgically important oxides, sulphides, chlorides, carbonates and sulphates is presented graphically, whereby the task of deriving practical metallurgical information is greatly simplified. The diagrams have been revised according to the latest available thermodynamic data. WHILE it is true that much careful investiga-tional work remains to be done, there are already available in the literature sufficient thermo-dynamic data to enable the metallurgist to predict with reasonable confidence the equilibrium conditions to be expected in most important, and potentially important, metallurgical reactions. In this connection, the careful, critical compilations of K. K. Kelley and his collaborators in numerous U. S. Bureau of Mines Bulletins are particularly valuable. However, the translation of reliable thermo-dynamic data into metallurgical language unfortunately involves lengthy manipulations of the cumbersome formulas which can be set up from heat of formation, entropy, and heat capacity data. Many years ago, Kelley20 predicted that thermo-dynamic calculations would be made in the future "with the aid of free energy, heat content, and entropy tables, rather than by means of the algebraic methods employed at present", and where such tables are available they greatly simplify the task of deriving practical metallurgical information. However, in addition to these tables, there are also available one or two reliable graphical presentations, particularly of free energy data, which may be used in the same way as the tables, but which have the added advantages that interpolation is never necessary, and that the behavior of different metals or compounds may be compared at a glance. Some years ago Professor Robert Lepsoe, Head of the Department of Metallurgy at Norways Institute of Technology (N.T.H.), began a compilation of curves showing the temperature dependence of the heat contents of the elements, and the heat contents and heats and free energies of formation of the common metallurgical compounds. With such a compilation, the thermal and free energy requirements of a reaction may be read from curves in a matter of seconds; and this statement applies not only to the formation of compounds from their elements, and to the reverse dissociation, but to any reaction involving substances whose thermodynamic properties are available. This follows from the fact that heats and free energies of formation are completely additive. For example, the free energy change associated with the chlorination of a metallic oxide at any temperature, T, is given by the free energy of formation of the chloride at temperature T minus that of the oxide also at T; both of these quantities may be read directly from curves of the type suggested above. INTRODUCTION. This paper is a discussion of a part of the mineral wealth of the States of Oaxaca and Puebla, Mexico. It does not refer to the precious metals, some miles of which, in these States, are said to have been worked before the advent of the Spanish conquistadores in the sixteenth century, as my purpose is to invite attention to the exploration of deposits of coal and iron-ores in the Mixteca region. The prominence given to coal is warranted by the great effect of the scarcity of fuel upon the industrial development of Mexico. Under the progressive administration of President Porfirio Diaz, the Republic has made wonderful advances in the past three decades; and this progress would have been greater but for the limitations imposed by expensive fuel. In the spring of 1906 I was detailed by the Birkinbine Engineering Offices, of Philadelphia, to accompany A. B. Adams, of New York, in a reconnoissance of reported deposits of iron-ores in the State of Oaxaca. The result of this expedition was the formation, in 1907, of the Oaxaca Iron & Coal Co., of which Mr. Adams became, and has remained, President and General Manager, and I have spent the past three years as Chief Engineer of this company in Mexico, principally in western Oaxaca, where field-headquarters were established. Production in the Argentine in 1930 amounted to 1,415,099.7 metric tons, which converted into barrels of 42 gal., using the factor of 6.29, amounts to 8,909,773 bbl. This is a decrease of 481,613 bbl. from the 1929 production, which was 9,391,386 bbl. The production for 1930 was divided among three fields, as shown in Table 1. The use of interference colors is the simplest experimental way to determine the approximate film thicknesses of oxides formed on liquid metals. A large amount of data under various conditions can be obtained easily and quickly. The oxidation of liquid lead has been studied by several investigators,1-5 but all of these studies have been on thick oxide scales. The purpose of- this work was to investigate the range 0 to 2000A film thickness. By using electron diffraction, Jenkins concluded that the surface of the film on molten lead is yellow orthorhombic PbO with the (110) planes parallel to the surface. This was confirmed by Shimaoka and Yamai7 who also used electron diffraction from the melting point of lead to 730°C. The rate of oxidation of pure liquid lead in air was measured in the temperature range 453" to 643°C by observing the rate of formation of interference colors on static lead baths. Approximately 170 g of lead (99.999 pct) was placed in a refractory dish having a working surface of 13.8 sq cm. This crucible was placed in a deep-well resistance furnace open to the atmosphere. The times at which the various interference colors appeared, after wiping the molten metal surface clean, were determined at 453", 533°, 600°, and 643°C. The combination of the following two exothermic reactions was studied with the purpose of recovering H2 from H2S formed in acid leaching of sulfide ores, direct reduction of metal sulfides with H2 or desulfurization of crude oils: In the kinetic study of the recovery of H2, the reaction rate was measured by the two methods of single-stage and circulation blowing of H2S through molten Pb in the temperature range of 550 to 750°C. The experimental results showed that the rate determining step is in the chemical reaction itself and also that this reaction is accelerated markedly by the addition of a trace of Ni, which may be responsible for the catalytic action of Ni dissolved in molten Pb. In the experiments where Pb metal was produced, PbS was oxidized in a stream of atmospheric N2 containing 0.5 to 20 vol-% 02 or in the same 02 partial pressures as in N2 though under reduced pressures in the temperature range of 400 to 800°C. It was found from these experiments that the formation of PbSO4, basic sulfates and PbO are suppressable to yield Pb metal alone above 750°C and for 02 concentrations of less than 1 vol-%. Vapor of PbS was thought to take an important part in the Pb formation mechanism, and the probability thereof was demonstrated thermodynamically.

AT the meeting of the Institute in Philadelphia, in June, 1876, it was my pleasure to read a paper on the "Manufacture and Endurance of Iron Rails." I then spoke of some trial rails which had been placed in the down track of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad, over which passed, in addition to merchandise and passengers, most of the heavy coal traffic of that company. One of these rails, made at the Philadelphia and Reading Rolling Mill in 1870, and then placed in the track, was removed in 1876, after having carried about 55,000,000 gross tons, and was on exhibition at the Centennial Exhibition. A piece of this worn rail, twisted cold, was also shown there. One of the same series of rails was allowed to remain in the track until 1878, and short sections of this rail, as well as one not worn, to show its original shape, are presented for your inspection. A comparison of the two will show that the top of the head or tread has worn down 3/16 ths of an inch during its nine years of service. It carried in that time 67,000,000 gross tons of freight, passengers, cars, and engines. This rail was made in the usual way of manufacturing iron rails at the Philadelphia and Reading Rolling Mill. The head was made from puddled iron bars, piled, heated, and rolled into bars, 4 1/2 and 3 inches wide by 1 inch thick, these bars, breaking joints, were made into a pile in section 9 inches square, heated and rolled into slabs 9 inches wide and 2 inches thick; the balance of the rail-pile was made of 4 1/2 and 3-inch bars, rolled from two-thirds old rails and one-third puddled iron, the

The oil embargo and increasing disillusionment with nu- clear power have put this country's abundant coal reserves in growing demand. Both the government and industry are looking toward increased coal mining, and with this goes an increased interest in new and advanced methods of coal utilization. One advanced coal system stands out among the rest-magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Its high efficiency, strong probability of sulfur dioxide control, and limited consumption of cooling water place MHD in a unique position to help the power generation industry. Another point in MHD's favor is the capital costs of operation, which are lower than those of other advanced technologies. However, initial costs are higher and realization of a commercial MHD plant in this country may be more than a decade away.

Development and production activity in Oklahoma during the year 1940 was of routine nature. Production, according to the Corporation Commission's figures, averaged 409,100 bbl. daily as compared with 421,000 bbl. for the year 1939. Discoveries were of minor importance except for the Cumberland pool in Marshall and Bryan Counties, in the southern part of the state. Maintenance of a relatively stable producing rate is attributable to the drilling of new wells and the recompletion of many old wells in the previously established producing areas. During the year 1785 new wells were drilled, a decline of approximately 10 per cent as compared with the previous year. Of the wells drilled, 962 were oil wells with a combined initial production of 241,000 bbl. daily, 172 were gas wells having aggregate capacities of 1205 million cu. ft., and 651 were dry holes. Wildcat activity increased 20 per cent over 1939 and 227 such wells were completed during the year; that isl 43 oil wells, 16 gas wells, and 168 dry holes. In addition to the new work completed, 603 wells were recorded as having been drilled deeper or plugged back to test new horizons; included were 334 producing wells with total initial production of 65,000 bbl. daily, 37 gas wells with initial aggregating 305 million cu. ft., and 232 abandonments. Footage drilled amounted to 4,730,000 ft., an average of 2650 ft. per well as com-pared with an average depth of 2600 ft. recorded the previous year. The principal new pools discovered as a result of the exploratory drilling were Cumberland; East Cromwell, in Okfuskee County, and Prague, in Lincoln County. At the end of the year Cumberland had 13 completed wells, which averaged 700 bbl. initial through tubing from the Simpson Bromide formation (Ordovician) at 4750 ft. East Cromwell had 10 wells with average initial of 435 bbl. in the Cromwell sand (Pennsylvanian) at 3460 ft. Prague had II wells with an initial average of 220 bbl. from the Senora sand (Pennsylvanian) at 3260 ft. There were notable extensions to the Dill pool, Okfuskee County, and to the Hewitt pool, Carter County. At the end of the year, 19 producing wells had been drilled in the former, with initials averaging 1000 bbl., and 63 wells averaging 150 bbl. daily in the latter. There were no notable changes in the policy of State conservation authorities with respect to proration. The Bureau of Mines recommendations for the year averaged 413,000 bbl. daily; the State author-ities fixed allowables at an average of 406,000 bbl. daily, while, as noted above, production averaged 409,100 barrels. The most important development in the older areas occurred in the following pools: Billings.—Seven oil wells with an average initial production of 2500 bbl. and two dry holes were completed during the year. Production from the Simpson horizon averaged 6025 bbl. daily as compared with 5950 the previous year. Production from this field has been almost steady since reaching its peak early in 1937. DURING the last year or so, with higher prices for gold and silver, many old properties in the West have come back to life. Almost every profitable producer in the old days has been considered, and the reasons for its shut-down investigated. If it seems likely that modern ore-finding, mining, and metallurgical methods, and S35 gold can again put the property on a profitable basis, someone can usually be found to back the venture. Methods of rejuvenation vary with the property, of course, but the following outline of what has been done with one group of mines in Idaho is fairly typical and may be suggestive to others. The Golden Chariot gold-silver properties, near Silver City, consist of seven old mines, working a vein system striking north and south, which had a productive length of some 3500 ft. The vein is a quartz-filled fissure with granite walls. Gold occurs in native, and with silver in the form of electrum which is the natural alloy of the two metals. A. J. Shaler—I should like to congratulate the authors on the presentation of this paper, which we have been awaiting a long time. The view they have taken of the sintering process, namely that voids are comparable to particles of a second phase capable of dissolving to a slight extent in the metal phase, is an interesting but dangerous one. Pines has given a first-order solution of the problem and Has predicted a decrease in the concentration of pores near the surface. The authors of the present paper have experimentally demonstrated the second-order effects, that is, the diffusion of the space phase between voids of different sizes, and also the movement of atoms from highly curved parts of a void to less curved regions of the same void. I have recently calculated the rate of vapor-phase transport within odd-shaped pores in copper at 850 °C and found that probably at that temperature volume flow is the more rapid shape-changing mechanism. The authors of the present paper have found that at 1000°C, vapor-phase transport is dominant. There is no disagreement here, I think. The dominant phenomenon can easily be different in different temperature ranges and with different pore shapes: I used a cylinder going to a sphere, not a tricuspid going to a "triple cuspidor." But there is some danger in the other art of the explanation, that is, in the study of the diffusion of vacancies from a pore to its neighbors and to the outside. A vacancy is very different in dimension from an atom. When it moves, it carries a field of elastic strain. This has to be taken into account. A concentration gradient of vacancies can cause them to diffuse. But in the absence of such a gradient, they can be made to diffuse by a field of stress. What happens in some of our experiments, and it is most noticeable in the shrinkage of synthetic cylindrical pores, like the tubes we have been working with, may be broken down into the following steps. (1) The presence of a surface establishes a vacancy concentration gradient, as Dr. Kuczynski and the present authors have shown. (2) Vacancies then diffuse in order to decrease this gradient. (3) In so doing, they cause an elastic field to be built up in such a direction as to oppose the diffusion, so that it slows down until it reaches a steady-state rate. (4) The steady-state flow is due to the fact that the surface tension acting on curved surfaces applies a stress to the system which itself mechanically causes vacancy diffusion. What I have said is that the diffusive types of flow of the authors and of Dr. Kuczynski are transient phenomena which soon stop if the pores are large. We are then left with a mechanical problem only, and our researches have not yet disclosed just what the mechanism of flow is; it may be a slip process, or it may take place by a vacancy diffusion of the type Nabarro has de-

PREVIOUSLY I have given much information concerning the miners, also I have discussed the choice of localities for mining, for washing sands, and for evaporating waters; further, I described the method of searching for veins. With such matters I was occupied in the second book; now I come to the third book, which is about veins and stringers, and the seams in the rocks1. The term "vein" is sometimes used to indicate canales in the earth, but very often elsewhere by this name I have described that which may be put in vessels2; I now attach a second significance to these words, for by them I mean to designate any mineral substances which the earth keeps hidden within her own deep receptacles.

A technique for measuring the creep and rupture strength of nickel specimens bonded by sintered oxide layers has been developed for the investigation of the role of grain-boundary oxide in the oxidation strengthening of nickel during creep at 817 °C. Prom the inverse dependence of the rate of bonding on the thickness of the starting oxide, it is suggested that the rate of diffusion of Ni++ through NiO is the controlling process at the start of sintering. Cornparisons of the creep and rupture strength and of the microstructure of sintered couples with conventionul creep specimens suggest rupture in nickel is prevented by load-bearikzg, ikltergranular layers of oxide. A number of recent investigations have shown that at high temperature and low stress the creep-rupture strength of nickel and nickel-base alloys may be much greater in air than in an inert gas or vacuum.'-7 For example, at 817°C and 2500 psi, nickep failed in vacuum in 48 hr but not in air after 4000 hr, and a Ni-Cr-A1 alloy5 at 1038°C and 3000 psi failed in vacuum in 4 hr but not in air after 731 hr. Fig. 1 is a typical creep curve in air for materials experiencing this pronounced environmental strengthening. I will endeavor to describe the methods of silver-mining and smelting employed by the natives in Mongolia. Modern methods have been applied there, but with little success; and, since they are familiar to most members of the Institute, I will simply mention that the failure was due to the high price of coke used in smelting the ore in modern furnaces, and to the unsuitable mill-machinery employed for concentrating the galena, which is finely distributed in the ore. The Jehol silver-mines are situated about 45 miles NE. of Jehol, the capital of Mongolia. They embrace two mines, 5 miles apart,—the Ku Shan Tze mine and the Yen Tung Shan mine. They were first worked by natives 50 years ago, about the time when mining was so flourishing in other parts of the world,—for instance, in California and Australia. The upper part of the vein is galena mixed with iron-stone, and is 2 to 4 ft. thick. At lower levels the vein is composed of silver-lead ore running between quartz-porphyry walls. Limestone, talc and black shale, colored by graphite, are found in other parts of the mine. Crystalline limestone is found 1 mile NE. of Ku Shan Tze. Granite is encountered in the Yen Tung Shan mine. Mining.—The native method of working the mines is most primitive. The same method may have been employed a thousand years ago. A small inclined shaft, 4 ft. by 4 ft., is sunk in the vein-stuff where the appearances are most favorable. Another shaft is sunk 20 or 30 yds. away, for ventilation. The shaft follows the vein in a zigzag fashion in whatever direction the vein appears to be richest. Timber is used only in soft ground. Where the ground is hard, the roof is cut into an arch-form. In some places, instead of using ladders, steps are cut in the rock, just wide enough to hold one foot. The deepest native workings are 400 ft. below the
