In a former paper (Runs., xxi., 286) I described the plant of the Marsac Refinery, and the manipulations of the process, but cou1d not, at the time, give reliable statistical results. To supply the latter is the object of the present paper. I shall give actual facts as correctly as possible, without any bias one way or the other. For all statistics I am indebted to Mr. W. G. Lamb, who has charge of the Marsac lixiviation-plant and refinery; to Mr. A. Luebeck, assayer at the Ontario mill; and to the Daly Office, Salt Lake City.* Before starting on the work of the year 1892, a most careful clean-up was made, and any remnants were charged to the refinery. During 1892 the Marsac lixiviation-works produced 48.8 tons of so-called "regular" sulphides, which contained, on an average, 11,449 ounces of silver per ton; 11.77 ounces of gold per ton; and 569.8 pounds of copper per ton. To this must be added, 266 pounds of sulphides and by-products left over from the product of 1891, which contained 1380 ounces of silver, 1.41 ounces of gold, and 63 pounds of copper. Before giving the results of the clean-up, a general discussion of the items of expense, methods of assaying, etc., is desirable.

THE analytical history of phosphorus in its relation to the metallurgy of iron is an interesting study, the progress of which runs parallel with the development of the greatest industry in the world. Without the means of finding out how much phosphorus crude pigiron contained, the Bessemer steel process would have been impossible. To do this was originally tedious and slow work. On the other hand, the " direct" process of to-day, as well as the various special processes for steel or iron, have demanded the utmost rapidity in the operations of analytical chemistry. In general, any rapid process for the conversion of unrefined metal into a product of standard composition depends upon the rapidity of some accurate means employed to control it. Moreover, in our modern practice, it is not improbable that the differences in physical properties among the various makes of iron or steel are affected, if not produced, by the use of different methods of analysis. Recourse is always had for correction to the ((standard methods," but I incline to think that these methods are susceptible to error. It is very certain that the system of duplicates would not be resorted to, if the fact were otherwise. Even when duplicated, under the most careful and skilful manipulation, these standard methods produce disagreements. In proof of statements like these, which may sound. heretical, I hope, further on, to cite some evidence worthy of attention. I do not now mean to lay claim to the distinction of discovering the ultimate corrective. That result will come, no doubt, in. time, as the product of the experience of many workers. In the case of phosphorus, as of the other ingredients of iron or steel, a great deal has been done to accommodate the methods of analysis in rogue to the growing necessity for more rapid procedures: Much of this work has concerned what might be called the incidents of method. MANY are the salts produced. by Nature in various regions and parts of the world, as Pliny shows in his History. Likewise, many are the differences among things that are salty and from which salt can be extracted, as, for instance, all the lyes from any kind of ashes and the urine of all animals. But because these are not things that give men the useful elements necessary to life, I shall omit speaking of them in detail with the exception of some of the more notable ones, and I shall tell you that I find that men proceed in only two ways in order to have a sufficiency for their needs. One is that of extracting it from the salty waters of the sea itself, or from springs, with a certain technique [34v] adapted to the places, either by congealing or by evaporation; and the other is that of mining it from the earth. The latter salt is clear and beautiful, and it is mined from mountains, already made by Nature in the form of stone without the aid of art. All these salts have more or less efficacy* according to the fineness or coarseness of their earthy elemental mixture, and according to the provinces and places where they are found generated. I REGRET that I am unable to present this subject in definite form and detail. All I shall attempt at this meeting is to lay before you some curious facts, the bearings and explanations of which must be reserved for future consideration. I hope before the next meeting to have carried experiments far enough to furnish a more important contribution to the science of iron metallurgy. The Wickersham process consists in the introduction into the molten metal, as it runs from the furnace, of air from the hot blast. Mr. Samuel Wickersham is the originator of the plan, as applied in practice, although Mr. Martien had the idea a long time ago, and, I believe, went to England about it. But at that time Mr. Bessemer was coming before the public with his invention, which engrossed the attention of iron-masters, and Mr. Martien accomplished nothing. The principal difficulty in our experiments at Dunbar was to get a practicable runner or trough, through which the molten metal should pass, and in which it should be exposed to the action of the Mast. The runner we used was ten feet long, and perforated on the sides to permit the entrance of the air-currents. When we used a cast-iron and fire-clay runner, the heat was so great that before we were more than half done with a run, the lower part of the runner was melted, and we had a magnificent Fourth of July display of fireworks until the blast was shut off. We had to abandon fire clay. The runner with which we have had the best success is made of wrong- ht-iron tubes, 29 inches in diameter, attached to a wrought-iron frame, and lined with a mixture of crushed conglornerate (quartz) and a little fire clay to give it cohesion. The wrought-iron shell curves inward over the upper edges, so as to catch and throw back into the current the flying sparks and particles of metal thrown out by ebullition. With this we have been able to run 12 to 14 tons at a heat with great ease. Mr. Wickersham has since prepared this material (pounded quartz) into a shaped brick or tile, with the necessary perforations for the passage of the air, which promises to answer every requirement for steady working. In looking into the crystal-ball scene of minerals beneficiation for 1970 and beyond, an impartial observer becomes con- fused as to what has been done and what is possible in the way of improvements. The mining official must balance the burden which is being shouldered by the mineral industry for maintaining our environment in its pristine state on one hand, with the solid advancements made in technology and cost savings on the other hand. Then the official wonders if this is really the criterion for judging overall performance today. As a prospective engineer, Dave Bolles sees it this way: "Specialization has caused many engineers to subordinate everything to doing their job the cheapest and fastest way. In the future this won't be enough. The engineer in the mineral industry will be responsible not only for mining, concentrating and smelting, but also for the resultant wastes- the mine dumps, the tailing dams and the slag piles." MANY things must be considered in coming to a decision as to what type of crushing and grinding equipment is to be used for preparing run-of-mine ore for concentration, amalgamation, flotation, or cyanidation. This paper is intended in no sense as a thorough discussion of these various factors, but rather contains a few observations based on a wide experience in the manufacture and application of milling machinery. One important governing factor is the tonnage to be dealt with. In large plants treating several thousands of tons in eight hours, a large jaw or gyratory crusher of substantial construction is standard equipment for reducing ore to 8 or 10 in. or finer. In open-pit work, using power shovels with 4- or 5-yd. dippers, a jaw crusher should have a receiving opening of 48 by 60 in., or 60 by 84 in., so that dynamite or hand sledging will not be required for breaking to a finer size before primary crushing. The coarsely broken ore is then conveyed by a belt to vibrating screens, the oversize from which is again conveyed by belts to secondary crushers having openings of 12 or 14 in., the product from which is conveyed to storage. From storage, the material goes to a finishing gyratory for reduction to 1/4 in. or finer.

DURING 1931 the petroleum industry has faced the most hazardous periods of its existence, caused by large potentials, overproduction, and demoralized markets. Two state governors actually resorted to the use of the militia in an effort to restore a semi-stabilized condition within the industry, to prevent waste of the states' natural resources, and to restore prices to a level that would yield the states a reasonable tax revenue. These conditions have made it necessary to put into effect most. stringent economies and have produced a spirit of cooperation between companies to an extent that never before existed. The necessity for unified action on such matters as proration and the advantages to be gained by unit operation are being realized by the oil industry as a whole. Fewer wells have been drilled and wildcat operations almost eliminated: development and operation costs have been greatly reduced and more attention is being paid to efficient recovery methods. The net work of oil pipe- lines has grown rapidly especially in the area of East Texas. The construction and operation of natural gas and gasoline pipelines into areas far distant from the source of supply has been one of the outstanding accomplishments. Refining efficiency has continued to increase and the public is being supplied with a better grade of gasoline at a lower price. The unreasonable tax which state politicians have succeeded in placing on gasoline has encouraged tax evasion and unfair competition by un- scrupulous dealers and has misled the public as to the true price of gasoline.

A short time ago, I had occasion to cast iron plates 1 in. thick, direct from metal containing Si, 0.51; 8, 0.045; Mn, 0.75; and P, 0.094 per cent. Much to my astonishment, I found that there was no trouble in planing them; whereas, if cupolaimetal of like composition had been used,*the planing would have been a difficult operation. I have often noticed a greater fluidity or " life " in furnace-metal, as compared with the cupola-product. Iron can be seen flowing down the furnace-runners from 50 to 100 ft., and reaching the last pig-bed in satisfactory condition, while cupola-metal might have solidified before it had flowed so far. I have seen Bessemer iron, which, on account of its low phosphorus-content, does not have the " life " of ordinary foundry-iron, held in a 30-ton ladle for nearly an hour and a half; and after skimming off the coke-dust, it still had to be cooled off' considerably before being cast. As a general proposition, it is known that the lower sulphur-content and the frequently higher temperature of direct-metal, compared with the same iron remelted in the cupola, has much to do with its greater life; yet some problems connected with this phenomenon seem to call for further study. For instance, furnace-metal containing more than 1 per cent. of silicon holds carbon, which is separated later as "kish." This separation does not take place to any great degree while the metal is very hot; but during its gradual cooling, at times, the kish is given off in such large quantities as to cover the ground from 20 to 30 ft. around the ladle. In making castings of direct-metal, especially with a high content of silicon, the separation of kish becomes an annoyance. In the paper the authors show [(Fig. 12)] in diagramatic form a "typical vacuum filtration system." This indicates a drum filter with two filtrate receivers-one for mother liquor and one for wash liquor. Have the authors ever found a drum filter that will adequately separate mother liquor from wash liquor? I recall in about 1957 being superintendent of a major copper leaching operation treating oxide flotation concentrates. The plan was being expanded, and filters installed to replace CCD following acid leaching and primary thickening of the pulp. The design of the expansion allowed the mother liquor to join the thickener overflow as feed for the electrolytic tankhouse. The water balance required that only pan of the wash liquor could be electrolysed direct, and the remainder had to be treated by lime precipitation. The design assumed the mother liquor would have the same copper content (about 50 gpl) as in the leach pulp solution, and the wash liquor about 50% of this (25 gpl from memory). You can imagine my horror when, on starting up, the solution from the mother liquor receiver contained somewhat under 40 gpl and, from the wash liquor receiver, somewhat over 40 gpl. The filters were provided by two of the most reputable manufacturers and, in the end I believe they agreed that never before had they supplied rotary drum filters that would segregate the filtrates. By changes to the valve design we made minor improvements, but eventually decided that insufficient segregation of the filtrates was possible to warrant trying to do it. On further consideration I concluded that, owing to the time delay between solution passing through the cake and entering the valve, segregation was impossible, though radical alteration of the internal piping of the filter might have improved it. I would be interested to know if anyone has found a solution to this problem using a drum filter. If not, why go on publishing information that infers that it is possible?

Human engineering was the keynote of the thirty-ninth annual meeting of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, which was held in New York, December 3-6. This note was sounded by President Charles T. Main in his address at the opening session and was carried through by all the speakers. In his survey of the year's work, he said that more than 6000 names of engineers were furnished the Government for filling a wide variety of positions. In addition to the 1400 members in service, two members of the council of the society are in uniform in France and one, as a distinct war service, is in charge of one of the largest shipyards. After giving other ways in which the Society has helped the Government, President Main called attention to the necessity for thoroughgoing efforts to increase production and the settlement of questions involving industrial relationships. At the following meeting, President Adams of the American Institute of Electrical Engineers called attention to the necessity of meeting labor in a progressive way, facing labor questions fairly and squarely, as the real interests of labor cannot be separated from those of the engineer. Charles E. Knoeppel, discussing "Industrial Organization as It Affects Executives and Workers," said the problem of the cost of living might be settled in two ways: 1, there must be more producers, and 2, there must be a greater amount supplied by those now producing. The first solution is practicable, he said, if labor is allowed shorter hours, better conditions, and a remuneration that will attract workers. The second can be employed by eliminating waste, standardizing conditions, setting fair tasks, and allowing men to earn an amount that will compensate them for' their skill and cooperation. Dudley R. Kennedy of Philadelphia, employment manager of the American International Shipbuilding Corporation, said the human-engineering phase of the country's industrial development had generally been overlooked. "We hardly yet know what competition means; we will learn it within a few years. Permit me to prophesy that the executive of the next decade will be the man who best knows men. He will be an originator, a handler of men as individuals, a handler of men in the mass, a leader not a driver, a very human man. The science of human engineering is here to stay. The study of human characteristics is the most enduring, as well as the most fascinating in the world, and still the most complex."

THE beta solid solution phases of the systems copper-zinc, copper-aluminum, copper-tin and silver-zinc are structurally analogous.1 R. F. Mehl and 0. T. Marzke2 have shown that the a phase upon segregating from the 0 phase in the system copper-zinc takes the form of needles lying parallel to a [111.] direction or some similar direction, such as [556], of the parent solid solution, and that the a phase upon segregating from the ß phase in the system copper-aluminum also takes the form of needles. By analogy they assume that in this case also the segregate needles lie parallel to the [111] or [556] direction in the ß lattice. The purpose of this investigation is to determine whether the structures resulting from segregation of the a phases from the respective 0 phases of the systems copper-tin and silver-zinc are analogous to those obtained by Mehl and Marzke in the systems copper-zinc and copper-aluminum.

T HE year 1920 will be a memorable one in the history of the world's coal supply. The prices reached were the highest of modern times, and as usually happens at such a time, the quality of the output deteriorated. In the last two years of the war, the world's output had risen close to the pre-war level. After the armistice, however, the cessation of munitions manufacture and the delay in resumption of normal business curtailed the demand for coal. Industrial disputes both in Europe and America closed many mines late in 1919 and further reduced the supply. Thus when in 1920 the world set its face to work again and industrial activity was resumed where resumption was possible, consumers' reserves of fuel proved insufficient and an almost universal feeling of apprehension over the coal supply swept around the world. The reasons for this alarm-lately a thing of the past-become clear when the world's production in 1920 is cast up.

THE relationship between hardenability based on a 50 per cent martensite criterion, and that based on higher percentages of martensite in a number of low-alloy steels was discussed in a previous paper by the authors.1 It was found that the differences between the hardenability values based on the 50 per cent martensite and full martensite criterions increased as the hardenability increased and that, in the steels of higher hardenability, these differences were fairly large. Furthermore, it was found that these relationships could be expressed with reasonable accuracy as a function of the hardenability. The importance of the full martensite criterion of hardenability in relation to the attainment of the optimum mechanical properties of tempered martensite was emphasized in the earlier paper. The purpose of the present work is to study the effects of some of the individual alloying elements on hardenability, using three different percentages of martensite as criteria, and thereby to evaluate the role of these individual elements in the general hardenability relationships previously reported. EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE Induction-furnace heats weighing 17-lb., of the compositions given in Table I, were cast and forged into 1 ¼ in. round bars. All heats were killed with aluminum additions corresponding to 1 lb. per ton. The compositions were chosen to represent several series of steels, in which only one alloying element would vary and in which the nonmartensitic constituents on quenching would be predominantly bainitic. All bars were normalized from 1650°F. and tempered one hour at I 150°F. prior to the hardenability determinations. Hardenability values are based on metallographic examination of standard Jominy bars, quenched from 1600°F. (I hr. and 20 min. heating time). The general procedure was the same as outlined in detail in the previous paper; (I) that is, the distance from the quenched end of the bar to the point of 0.1 per cent transformation was first measured on the microscope and then the percentage of martensite was estimated at every 0.05 in. from the quenched end, and these percentage values plotted against the distance along the bar. In this case, samples 2 in. long were cut from the quenched end of the Jominy bars and 10 fields were examined and averaged at each distance. The conversion of Jominy distance to ideal diameter is based on a revised correlation curve (Fig. I). This curve is based on work carried out at the Research Department of the South Chicago Works, Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corporation, and represents a direct correlation between hardenability values as deter-

Union Carbide began looking seriously at heap leaching in 1971. At that time some 1.6 million tons of mineral averaging 0.40 kg U308 /t) (0.80 lb U308) were stockpiled at various sites around the Gas Hills, Wyoming, uranium facility. Several alternatives for economically exploiting these reserves were considered and heap leaching seemed the most attractive. At the time, Western Nuclear Inc. was operating a heap leaching project nearby in which the low-grade ore was leached with sulfuric acid, the product liquor treated in an on site solvent extraction circuit, and the stripped product liquor re-acidified and recycled. The operators were most generous in allowing us to visit their site and in answering our questions. They were also helpful in discussing the problems associated with heap leaching. Their experience confirmed our belief that it was possible to operate a heap leach profitably on material too low grade for conventional milling.

HAVING demonstrated to you above the practice of bringing silver to its ultimate fineness and perfection, it now remains for me to describe how the two kinds of metals that are found in the smelting product that you made from the ores are to be brought to their end: One is copper and the other lead, and perhaps a third is gold, if per-chance the silver that you refined in the cupeling hearth contained any. It would be almost impossible that it should not contain any, because either a little or a lot is almost always found as an admixed substance not only in silver but in. every one of the other metals as well. But in order to continue in sequence, you must suppose that there is some gold and that, of the two materials you have that I mentioned above and told you to save, one is the matte (calling it according to the usage of Germany, * since I do not know a more exact or better word for describing it to you) and the .other is the litharge that you took from the cupeling hearth. In addition, the hearths themselves are saturated and full of lead. If these things should remain in their present condition they would be useless bodies without any perfection. First, taking one of the three said parts, as a material of greater quantity and also as a thing that needs greater labor, and because, being reduced to the point I have told you with smelting and evaporation, it is nearer to its end, I shall tell you what must be done in order to bring it to pure copper. As I have told you, there are two materials on hand, one of which is the matte and the other the litharge. Each at first sight seems a half-burned thing; one has already been finished metal and the other is to be, but in my opinion the matte is nearer to its end than is the litharge because the latter has been dried by the power of the fire and re-formed from another body. Now leaving aside the discussion of this thing, after the matte has been well evaporated and reduced, it is taken and put on a forge. In front of the tuyère a receptacle is made of stones that neither calcine nor melt, or of coals and powdered clay, in the form of a little cradle that is longer than it is wide and not very deep. The concepts of "redox potential" and "oxide-ion activity" are suggested as measures of the fundamental slag properties of interest to the extraction metallurgist. Thermodynamic data for single oxides are presented graphically in these terms and a method of expressing desulfurization of steel in electrochemical terms is indicated. The application of the theovy to mixtures of oxides (slags) is discussed and the redox potential is shown to provide a link between all the redox equilibria in a slag-metal system. In particular, the redox potential of the slag, its basicity, and the oxygen partial It is now generally recognized that slags are mixtures of polymeric anions of silicates, aluminates, phosphates, and so forth, neutralized by cations. However, conventional thermodynamic treatments of slags have almost always been in terms of activities of the pure component oxides (e.g., SiO,, CaO, A1203, and so forth), which are known not to exist as such in slags. While this type of empirical treatment is perfectly acceptable and provides a rigorous and self-consistent way of considering thermodynamic properties, it can give little guide to the structure of slags, since its very nature ig- pressure are closely connected. Direct deternzination of these by electrode-potential measurements is possible. Literature calculations of ion activities in the system Ca0 -Fe0-SiO,/molten iron are used to evaluate redox potentials, which are shown to correlate with data on sulfur partition in the system. In addition to its application to equilibrium conditions, an electrochenzical approach to slag-metal reactions might provide a basis for new methods of studying the kinetics of these reactions and for plant-control instruments in the pyrometallurgical industries. nores such complications. Recently, the thermodynamic properties of some slags have been successfully interpreted in terms of activities of anions of varying degrees of complexity. (While these have been successful curve-fitting exercises, there is no direct implication that the anions used in the models are necessarily the ones which actually exist in slags.) The success of these ionic thermodynamic treatments is encouraging but a complete picture of slag structure is still a long way off. What is needed is a complete knowledge of the values of stability constants for all reactions in slags of the type:

Cyril w. Knight, Toronto, Ont., Canada (communication to the Secretary*).—Mr. Hore's paper presents an interesting summary of our knowledge of this important mineral field ; and is therefore acceptable as giving information which our Transactions did not already contain, although it presents little or nothing not made known by other writers before 1906, when Mr. Hore began work in the field as a student assistant. Contributions of this kind, however, should be made completely valuable by such references to previous work as will enable the reader to follow to their original sources the theories or conelusions stated by the author. It is quite natural, and even excusable, that a new observer should find novelty in his on observations—especially if he is not acquainted with the work of predecessors in the same field. Moreover, the independent repetition of an observation or conclusion has a distinct value as a confirmation, though it may have none as a discovery. But the publication of it, without reference to its predecessors, may place the author in an unfavorable light as either ignorant of the history of his subject, or willing to claim credit to which he is not entitled. Of the latter fault, I do not accuse Mr. Hore ; but I cannot wholly acquit him of the former. Without disparaging his intelligent work, I must point out that his paper, as it stands, might easily give the impression that he claims originality for many statements which are by no means new, and that he emphasizes unduly his own publications. Thus, his remark (p. 481) "I have described the silver-fields in a general way in my paper " (not yet published), should have been accompanied with reference to some of the numerous papers, already published, which describe these fields. The haulage system at the International Minerals T & Chemical Corp. (IMC) potash mine near Carlsbad, N. M., reached a turning point in December 1956 with the introduction of rope suspended belt haulage. In fact, IMC pioneered the use of this type of belt in the potash industry. Since that time belt conveyance has been employed as an extension of the rail system but not as a replacement of the main rail haulage. IMC's potash mine is located in the Permian Basin, approximately 20 miles east of Carlsbad. From three levels, the 800-ft, 850-ft and 900-ft, over 60 million tons have been extracted. Langbeinite (K,SO,. 2MgS0,) is mined on the 850 level and sylvite (KCl) on the 900 level. The 800 level, with both langbeinite and sylvite mineralization, is idle. Mining heights vary from 54 in. to more than 10 ft. A room and pillar mining system is used.
