Relationships are derived between average dimensions measured on a polished cross section and the spatial dimensions of particles dispersed as uniform cylinders. The equations are applicable to the measurement of rods or plates without the stipulation that they be extremely thin. QUANTITATIVE analysis of the elements of mi-crostructures has been limited by a lack of knowledge concerning the relationships between observations on plane surfaces and the spatial nature of the structure. This paper is an extension of previous efforts to establish equations suitable for the quantitative investigation of microstructures. The equations derived fill two gaps in the range of particle shapes for which measurements may be required, namely those shapes lying between extremely thin plates and equiaxed particles (approximately spherical), and those intermediate between equiaxed particles and extremely thin rods or needles. In a previous paper' equations were developed relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the average spatial dimensions of particles in the form of spheres, extremely thin plates, and extremely thin rods. For extremely thin rods the dimensions measured on a polished cross section were found to depend on the radius only, so that no information concerning the rod lengths or number of rods per unit volume could be obtained from observations on a cross section. In this paper equations are derived relating dimensions measured on a polished cross section to the spatial dimensions of particles in the form of identical cylinders. These equations may be used to evaluate the dimensions of rods, as well as the dimensions of plates, without the stipulation that the plates or rods be extremely thin. The impossibility of evaluating the length of extremely thin rods from planar measurements appears as an increase in the amount of data required for a given precision, as the length-radius ratio increases. Consider a sample containing particles of a phase in the form of cylinders of uniform radius T and height t. If the cylinders are randomly oriented, as in a sufficiently large sample of a fine grained poly-crystalline material, area and lineal analysis may be carried out with parallel cross-sectional planes and lineal traverses. If the cylinders are not randomly oriented, it is necessary to randomize the orientations of the cross-sectional planes and traverse lines. Let a unit cube be cut from the sample, and a cross-section plane be passed through the cube parallel to one of the cube faces. The number of particles N, cut by the cross-sectional plane per unit area is equal to the number of particles N, per unit volume times the probability p1 of a plane intersecting a single randomly positioned and randomly oriented cylinder in the cube. Let J be the maximum cylinder dimension in the direction normal to the cross-section planes, as shown in Fig. 1. C. M. Decroly (University of Brussels, Belgium) — The importance of the fluorides in the process metallurgy of special metals has already been accepted and it will probably increase in the future. Free energy diagrams as such established by Professor Kellogg are therefore very useful. It is interesting to note that the absolute value of the standard free energy of formation of HF increases with temperature, whereas for almost all the other fluorides it decreases; consequently it should be theoretically possible to reduce all the fluorides of the metals which, at low temperature, have a greater affinity for fluorine than hydrogen by this last element, provided a sufficiently high temperature is used in order to have a good efficiency. However, with regard to the reduction of UFe by hydrogen, I doubt that it will be possible to obtain directly the metal at comparatively low temperatures. There are other uranium fluorides which are more stable than UF6 and it is very likely that such fluorides will be obtained first. For example, in considering the reaction: UF6gas + H2gas + UF1so1id + 2 HFgas it is found, using the thermodynamic data of Brewer et al, that ?H298 = —66 kcal and ?G°298, = —65.2 kcal. As a result, the reduction of UF6 to UF4solld should proceed spontaneously even at ordinary temperature. On the other hand, the standard free energy of formation of UF4solid at 298°K is AG°298 = -209 kcal per mol of F2. The reduction of UF4 by hydrogen will be practically difficult and, as it is known, the only practical way of reducing this compound is to use alkaline-earth metals such as calcium or magnesium. I should like to point out, further, that the fluorination of many metal oxides can be carried out very easily by using the ammonium difluoride method of preparation, which renders the use of fluoride gas unnecessary. The first compound formed is generally a double fluoride of the metal and ammonium. This compound can be decomposed by heating either in a vacuum or in an inert atmosphere, ammonium fluoride being volatilized leaving the metal fluoride in a very pure state. H. H. Kellogg (author's reply)—Professor Decroly is quite right in pointing out that the formation of lower halides of uranium may complicate the reduction of UF6 by H2. I was unable to find his reference to the free energy of formation of UF4 in the compilation of Brewer.13 however. The value of AG°298, = —209 kcal for formation of ½ UFa seems rather high, and I hope the source of this value may be made clear.

Mark R. Lamb, Torres, Sonora, Mexico (communication to the Secretary*): I have read Mr. Merrill's paper with much interest, and cannot but accept his challenge as regards the cost of the clean-up at the Homestake mill. If I understand him correctly, the two men take the precipitates from the presses in about six hours, and do nothing towards refining them. If that is so, it would correspond to the work four men do here in about eight hours—that is, to clean the box and to place the precipitates in the driers. In order to make a fair comparison, the bullion in each case should be stated in ounces, since it is as diflicult to precipitate silver as gold, and our bullion is mostly silver. Bullion to the value of $50,000 is equivalent to a weight of about 2,500 oz. At our last clean-up eight standard bars, each 1,100 oz. in weight, were made, which equals a total weight of 8,800 oz'. Four men had the precipitates drying by 8 p.m. This plant, the Minas Prietas works of Charles Butters & Co., at Minas Prietas, has square-bottomed electrolytic vats, an arrangement which necessitates the handling of all the precipitates in buckets. The Butters plant at Virginia City, Nev., is equipped with conical vats, and probably could make a still better showing under similar conditions. Another point is that common labor only is required. (Ordinary laborer's wages at Minas Prietas are $0.70 gold.) I may say also that, except for the convenience of the refinery, the box could be cleaned monthly, instead of bi-monthly, at only a slight additional expense. The comparison, if made a few months ago, would have been much more in favor of the electrolytic process, as the tailings handled at that time contained a large quantity of copper, and the amount of zinc-dust required would have been enormous.

The world's largest steam-driven mine hoist, built by Nordberg Manufacturing Co. a half century ago, has become a major tourist attraction in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. The hoist, designed by company founder Bruno V. Nordberg, is located in the Quincy Mine Number Two, just north of Hancock. Nordberg began construction of the mammoth machine before World War I, but delayed completion until after the war. The hoist became operational in 1920 and continued running until the mine was shut down in 1931.

The revised resolution submitted by this committee led to further discussion and as no agreement could he reached, the matter was laid on the table.

Using an adsorption-column technique the partition of dodecylamine between quartz and water has been determined at concentrations ranging from 0.5 to 4000 mg per liter. The adsorption varies as the square root of the concentration. Attachment of dodecylamine to quartz is reversible. The amount adsorbed in a flotation operation giving almost complete recovery is under 5 pct of the amount required for a monolayer.

J. Leja (Professor, Dept. of Mineral Engineering, U.B.C. Vancouver, Canada) — I would like to offer some comments on the behavior of contact angle with time, treated in this paper. The authors should be congratulated for a clear exposition of these uncommon departures in the correlation between flotation and contact angle, in systems of importance to industrial practice. Some nine years ago Professor J. H. Schulman (presently at Columbia University, New York) and I reported on a similar study conducted at the Ernest Oppenheimer Laboratory, Cambridge, England.' The systems used by us had, how- ever, no direct practical application at that time, as mercury in solutions of xanthates was tested with a variety of alkyl-aryl polyoxyethylene frothers which were then new to flotation practice. Further, the paper dealt with findings contrary to the then widely held belief that the contact angle established in collector-solution is unaffected by the addition of a frother. Correlation with flotation, or lack thereof, was not sought, though we did suggest that in many cases the selectivity of frothers might be influenced by the dynamic contact angles. A study of bit-tooth penetration, or crater forniation. under simulated borehole condirions has been made. Pressure conditions existing when drilling with air, water and mud have been sirnulated for depths of 0 to 20.000 ft. These crater tests showed that a threshold bit-tooth force must he exceeded before a crater is .formed. This thresh old force increased with both tooth dullness and diflerenrial pressure between the borehole and formalion fluids. At low differential pressures, the craters formed in a brittle manner and the cuttings were easily removed. At high differenlial pressures, the cunings were firmly held in the craters and the craters were formed by a pseudoplas-tic mechanism. With constant farce of 6,500 16 applied to the bit reeth, an increase in differential pressure (sitnulated mud drilling) from 0 to 5,000 psi reduced the crater volumes by 90 per cent. A comparable increase in hydrostatic fluid pressure (simulated water drilling) produced only a 50 per cent decrease in volutne while changes in overburden pressure (simulated air drilling) had no detectable effect on crater volume. Crater tests in unconsolidated sand subjected to differential pressure showed that high friction was present in the sand at high pressures. Similar friction belween the cuttings in craters produces the transition from brittle to pseudo plastic craters. INTRODUCTION The number of wells drilled below 15,000 ft increased from 5 in 1950 to 308 in 1964. Associated with these deep wells are low drilling rates and high costs. High bottom-hole pressures produce low drilling rates by increasing rock strength and by creating bottom-hole cleaning problems. This paper describes an experimental investigation of crater formation under bottom-hole conditions simulating air, water and mud drilling. Although numerous investigators have studied bit-tooth penetration (cratering) at atmospheric pressure conditions, only limited work has been done on cratering in rocks subjected to pressures existing in oil wells. Payne and Chippendale2 have studied cratering in rocks subjected to hydrostatic pressure using spherical penetrators. Garner et aLJ conducted crater tests in dry limestone by varying overburden pressure and borehole fluid pressure independently and using atmospheric formation-fluid pressure Gnirk and Cheathem4,5 have studied crater formation in several dry rocks subjected to equal overburden and borehole pressure and atmospheric formotion pressure. Podio and Gray studied the effect of pore fluid viscosity on crater formation using atmospheric borehole and formation-fluid pressurc and varying overburden pressure. Although these studies have provided useful information on crater formation under pressure, they were limited in that the three bottom-hole pressures could not be varied independently and, therefore, that many drilling conditions could not be simulated. The prersure chamber used in this study allowed visual observation of the cratering mechanism and independent control of the borehole, formation and confining pressures. By using different fluids in the chamber, pressure conditions existing in air, water and mud drilling to depths of 20,000 ft were simulated. The mechanisms involved in cratering at these different pressure conditions were studied for teeth of varying dullness and at different loadins rates. High-speed movies (8,000 frames/sec) and closed-circuit television were used to visually study the crater mechanism under pressure. EXPERIMENTAT PROCEDURE PRESSURE CHAMBER The Pressure chamber in Fig. I was used to simulate bottom-hole pressure conditions. This chamber has been pressure-tested to 22,500 psi and is normally operated at pressures up to 15,000 psi. The chamber contains four lucite windows' used for illuminating and observing the crater mechanism under pressurc. A closed-circuit television and a Fastax camera (8,000 frames/sec) have been used in these studies. Cylindrical rock specimens (8-in. diameter X 6-in. long) were subjected to three independently controlled pressures simulating overburden, borehole fluid and formation-fluid pressures. Overburden pressure, which corresponds to the stress induced by the overlying earth mass, was applied by exerting fluid pressure against a rubber sleeve surrounding the rock. Borehole pressure, which is the pressure exerted by the column of mud in the wellbore, was simulated by applying pressure to the fluid overlying the rock in the chamber. Formation pressure was simulated by applying pressure to the water saturating the rock. The borehole and formation pressures were equal except when mud was used in the chamber, in which case the differential pressure between these fluids acted across the mud filter cake.

Brush plating has been thought of by many as black magic bordering on alchemy. Actually it is a science that uses both electro-chemical and mechanical engineering skills and technology. We are not sure when brush plating was first used or by whom. I do know that many times when we would put in for patents on things we thought of as new and innovative, we would find that someone had done it many years before. It took World War I1 to get brush plating off and running. Now at this point, someone may be asking just what is brush plating? And why are we plating brushes? One way of describing what brush plating is, is by telling what it is not such as tankless plating. Brush plating-is an electro deposition of an electro-platable element or alloy onto a conductive surface. To do this a source of direct current is required; this can vary widely. I prefer stepless voltage control from 0-35 volts with a capacity depending on the size job to be done. This can vary up to 500 amps for normal applications. In one case we have used 7500 amps.. In the beginning a brush was actually used with a wire in the middle of the bristles and a jelly-like paste made up from tank plating solutions. The bristles were saturated with the gunk and the spot to be plated was muddled with the concoction at a potential which was the same as the applied tank Voltage. Metal was deposited but only thin coats were achieved. Today we use graphite wrapped or covered with cotton to form a Q-tip type anode. By using graphite rather than a specific metal we are able to either plate, de-plate or strip, electro- mill, electropolish, or anodize--all with the same equipment. Only the electrolyte needs to be changed.

Edward Cooper was born in New York City, Oct. 26, 1824. His father, Peter Cooper, to say nothing of manifold reasoils for fame as an inventor and philanthropist, deserves to be remembered as a pioneer in the establishment .of public schools ; and it is not surprising that. he sent his son to one of the democratic institutions in which he was himself so ardently interested. From the public school Edward Cooper went to Columbia College, where he made the acquaintance of Abram S. Hewitt, who was first his tutor, afterwards his traveling companion, brother-in-law, business partner and life-long friend.' For twenty years I was the consulting engineer of the firm of Cooper & Hewitt, and also connected with the work of the Cooper Union, in which they were both deeply interested and faithfully active. On the basis of the intimate knowledge thus gained, I venture an estimate of Edward Cooper's character and career which, if not fully comprehensive, may facilitate a juster estimate than would be reached by the student of those data which the modesty of the man permitted to be placed upon public record.

THE work herein reported shows that galena in certain organic solutions of fatty acids becomes coated with lead soaps, and that this coating is not only highly water-repellent but is also repellent to certain organic liquids, particularly those [ ] of high surface tension; i.e., nitrobenzene, diphenylmethane. WETTING PROPERTIES OF GALENA IN NONAQUEOUS FATTY ACID SOLUTIONS When a "captive bubble"' is withdrawn from a polished, plane galena surface under a nitrobenzene solution of stearic acid, the air bubble shows a decided tendency to "cling" to the mineral surface. The contact angle, therefore, was greater than zero, although it was not large enough to be measured quantitatively by the captive-bubble method.* [ ] When pure nitrobenzene was substituted for the nitrobenzene-stearic acid solution, no clinging of the bubble was observed; viz., contact angle = zero. Although the contact angle developed in air-galena-nitrobenzene-fatty acid solution was small, the organic solvent repellency of the galena surface was great enough to enable good recovery in a laboratory flotation cell.2 In Table I are given the results of flotation experiments using several different fatty acids dissolved in nitrobenzene.

Diffusion coefficients and marker movements have been determined in brass using welded couples. Three different concentration ranges were employed at 750°C, while a fourth concentration range was measured at 500°, 600°, 700°, and 800°C. Marker displacements toward and porosity development in the high zinc side of the couple were observed in all cases. The results were interpreted as favoring a vacancy diffusion mechanism. IN the large amount of diffusion literature which has accumulated during the past half century, very few experimental data have been presented on body-centered-cubic metallic phases. The impressive combination of experimental and theoretical studies which has given the vacancy mechanism a fairly secure position as the preferred mechanism for most face-centered-cubic metals has no counterpart for body-centered-cubic phases, although the theoretical picture seems to be in a better state than the experimental work. The attempts to select diffusion mechanisms by the theoretical calculation of the activation energy for the various conceivable unit diffusion processes and the energy of formation of the type of lattice defect required have been based on models of two kinds. The first kind utilizes potential functions fitted for certain properties of pure crystalline copper; the second kind is fitted for sodium. The latter is an example of an open metal in which the metallic ion is small compared with interatomic distance,&apos; while the former is characteristic of the larger class of metals in which the ions have diameters about as large as the interatomic distance. brass should resemble copper in this fundamental property. It should be evident that results on the mechanism of diffusion obtained for one of these classes need not necessarily apply to the other. Huntington and Seitz, using a model of the copper type, showed that the activation energies to be expected for interstitial migration or a two-atom direct interchange were much higher than that for vacancy diffusion. Zener pointed out that a four-atom ring rotation would involve an activation energy considerably lower than the two unlikely mechanisms although still higher than the vacancy mechanism in the face-centered-cubic structure. Furthermore, he argued, the four-atom rotation would be relatively easier in a body-centered-cubic lattice and might be competitive with the vacancy mechanism. Paneth showed that a body-centered-cubic crystal-like sodium could form interstitial defects of special type, called a crowdion, by crowding an extra atom into < 111 > directions where the defects would affect a line of about eight atoms. The defect was constrained to move along the defining line. Unlike the face-centered-cubic case, therefore, the theoretical calculations for the body-centered-cubic mechanism do not provide a very clear-cut answer, and the absence of adequate experimental studies is the more serious. This investigation was undertaken for the purpose of obtaining useful information on diffusion in body-centered-cubic phases. brass was chosen for several reasons: 1—the phase field is sufficiently wide at high temperatures to permit the use of diffusion couples with adequate concentration ranges for satisfactory chemical analysis, 2-—thermodynamic activity data are available for the calculation of mobilities from diffusion coefficients, 3—the phase is as close to the theoretical model of the copper -type on which the calculations have been done as any body-centered-cubic metallic phase is likely to be. Measurements of the movements (if found) of inert markers during the diffusion process would indicate that a vacancy or Or mechanism played a major role in diffusion in brass. If no marker movement should be found, a ring mechanism would be indicated but not assured. Experimental Procedure The alloys used in these experiments, listed in Table I with analyses, were supplied by the Naval Research Laboratory. THE important investigations of Dr. G. F. Becker at Steamboat Springs, Nev., in 1885, aided by the analytical work of W. H. Melville, established the fact that sulphides were being deposited at the surface by hot ascending waters.1 Steamboat Springs is situated near the eastern base of the escarpment of the Sierra Nevada, six miles distant from the Comstock lode. In a region of former volcanic activity, hot springs with a temperature of about 80° C. break forth through a fissure in granodiorite, and at the base of a basaltic bluff the waters have deposited a large amount of siliceous and calcareous sinter, some of which is colored red by antimony sulphide. The sinter from one of the springs was analyzed by Mr. Melville,2 and his results, re-calculated to grams per kilogram, showed [ ] The relative quantities of antimonious and arsenious sulphides are not given in the above analysis, but I believe that the former greatly predominated. The water of one of the springs was also analyzed by Melville and the re-calculation of this analysis to salts that were possibly present is given in Table I.

UNTIL recently, practically all geophysical prospecting in Australia was conducted by government departments, either by the Aerial, Geological and Geophysical Survey of Northern Australia or the New South Wales Department of Mines. At present, in addition, the Shell company is carrying out an extensive geophysical campaign in South West Queensland. The Northern Australia Survey has now been in operation for over six years, its work being carried out principally in the northern and central parts of Australia over an area of about a million square miles. At present this Survey is being brought to a conclusion but it appears certain that the geophysical section will be transferred to a Commonwealth Government department on a permanent basis. At present the officers of the Geophysical Section are preparing or have issued some 150 reports on their field work and also a special technical report on the geophysical practice of the Survey.

A METALLURGICAL research building is to be erected for the Armour Research Foundation at the Illinois Institute of Technology. It will be located at the corner of Federal and 34th Sts., Chicago, and fully equipped will cost $250,000. It will provide the Middle West with the largest and most complete of facilities for the conduct of developmental and industrial research in this field. The new building will be constructed around an existing foundry and metallurgical research building which has become too small to carry on and service the many research projects contracted for by the Foundation, having to do with steel, alloys, and nonferrous metals. After two bays of the new unit have been completed, the old unit will be torn down and the new one completed.

I HAVE lately had occasion to examine sulphuretted ores of bismuth&apos; both from Tudor, Ontario, and Latete, New Brunswick. The former consisted chiefly of bismuth-glance, carbonated at the outcrop, and within associated with some metallic bismuth, iron-pyrites and graphite, in a quartz gangue. In the second locality, where it appears to be present in considerable quantity, the veinstone is also quartz, but the associates of the bismuth-glance are chalcopyrite and galena. The treatment of such mixed ores in the furnace for the extraction of the bismuth could yield only a very impure product, and in view of the high price of the metal I tried with success a wet method for the treatment of the ore, which is based on well-known chemical reactions, and may, in some cases, be advantageously used. The pulverized ore is dissolved by heat in commercial nitric acid, and the remaining gangue washed by displacement, first with a little strong acid (which is used to attack a fresh portion of ore) and then with a moderate quantity of water, which is added to the first solution. Processing nonmagnetic taconites by selective flocculation-desliming and flotation requires large volumes of water. If impounded without treatment, these off-process waters require excessively large areas for containment. To discharge the waste water into natural waterways would contribute to stream pollution and likely would not be permitted. In U.S. Bureau of Mines experiments conducted in the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center&apos;s 900-lb per hr pilot plant, approximately 85% of water requirements for the flotation-based treatment of a Michigan nonmagnetic taconite were met by reclaimed water. Water reclamation of the off-process streams from flotation was accomplished by controlled additions of lime, sodium carbonate, and a synthetic flocculant to reduce turbidities to 51000 ppm equivalent SiO*, while maintaining a Ca(II) content of =16 ppm in the finished effluent. Flotation concentrates of good quality were obtained using the reclaimed water. The cost of chemicals used in water reclamation was approximately equal to the savings in flotation reagents attributed to recycling of the water. Water quality is perhaps as important to flotation as are the reagents used. The character of water is extremely variable, depending on whether the source is a well, lake, or stream, upon the season and temperature, upon prior use, and upon the character of the watershed. All of these factors influence the water hardness and the quantity of other dissolved inorganic salts, turbidity, dissolved and suspended organic matter, dissolved gases, and pH. Frequently, the differences in water quality can measurably influence flotation selectivity, often to the point of spelling success or failure. Water hardness is particularly troublesome in flotation systems employing fatty acids, but other unrecognized constituents may also contribute to peculiarities in flotation behavior. Furthermore, a given water source may be entirely satisfactory in one flotation system, but entirely inappropriate in another. In recent years, society has given more attention than formerly to water use, even in areas where water is plentiful. However, both the demands of a growing population, with increased per capita needs, and also those of industry must be met. As a result, riparian rights must be negotiated with the appropriate government agency or agencies so that consumption of water is often allocated or otherwise controlled. Furthermore, the disposal of off-process industrial and domestic water is coming under the increasing scrutiny of these same governmental units. In these respects, the mineral industry is no exception, so that conservation, water reclamation, and reuse may be expected to assume increasing importance. In 1932, it was stated that, "water reclamation is generally more expensive than the economy in water and reagents resulting from its use. It is employed only if it is urgent to save water."&apos; The economic aspects of this statement may still be true, but the unrestricted use of water is becoming less and less an option of the user. The purpose of this paper is to discuss an investigation conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM), in which water reclamation and treatment were undertaken to develop procedures for, and to assess the effects of, water reuse on the flotation treatment of nonmagnetic taconites. This investigation is a logical extension of previous work described by the author and associates at the Twin Cities Metallurgy Research Center employing selective flocculation-desliming and anionic flotation of silica from low-grade, nonmagnetic iron ores2,8 The requirements for the selective flocculation-de-sliming and the anionic flotation of silica processes determined the direction of the investigation. Previous studies had indicated that pH levels of about 11.0 and 11.8 were required for selective flocculation and flota-tlon, respectively. The calcium content of the water was believed to be of importance in both of these operations, and since Minneapolis tap water with a Ca(I1) content of about 16 ppm had been successfully used, an attempt was made to reclaim the process water at an equal level of dissolved calcium. Additionally, the objective was to nullify or effectively limit the effects of dispersants and fatty acid residuals from prior stages of processing. Last but not least, the system of water treatment had to have the capability of reducing turbidities to workable levels. With about half of the effluent being derived from the selective flocculation-desliming step and carrying about 25,000 ppm of highly dispersed, suspended fines, this last objective appeared formidable at the outset. Procedures for water reclamation were derived, in part, from well-known mineral dressing practices, from past observations and investigations, and from concepts contained in various pertinent publications on water treatment."c These procedures involved: 1) flocculation with lime and poly electrolyte-type flocculants, 2) lime-soda-ash softening, 3) chemical precipitation, and 4) mineral surface adsorption. Control was exercised at various stages of water reclamation by frequent measurements of Ca(11), pH, and turbidity.
