Many open pit mining operations seek to control blasting-related movement of ore and waste to minimise loss and dilution. Tracking the movement of ore boundaries can result in the maximisation of ore recovery and minimisation of waste sent to the mill, thereby optimising the economic performance of the operation.A novel solution for tracking the ore–waste boundary location before and after a blast uses subsurface markers placed along the boundary with all measurements and scans conducted remotely from the blast block. Upon system activation, user-operated equipment on the surface determines the three-dimensional (3D) location of the subsurface markers.The patented system concept combines two electromagnetic mechanisms, magnetic positioning and radio frequency through-rock communications to enable remote battery-powered markers, buried within the rock to be accurately located in 3D space.Field trials at a quarry have demonstrated the system can comfortably handle over 100 subsurface markers with a complete scan, including set-up, taking less than an hour. Location accuracy for each marker in 3D space is better than 0.5 m at a range up to 50 m from the magnetic source, and the system has an overall operational range in excess of 75 m.CITATION:Blay, K R, Spathis, A T and Leslie, K E, 2015. RME has a vision for a new mill operational paradigm made possible by RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System. This vision can be moved forward into reality at any time with or without guidance from recent development in measurement and predictive modelling tools.Some new liner designs can degrade SAG mill performance because of mill volume loss, ball strike (rotational speed limitations) and other issues often brought about by optimising liners for life and without a backward glance at metallurgical consequences. Freshly relined mills can initially produce as little as 80 per cent of their maximum throughput, that maximum occurring toward the end of the linersÆ wear life. RMEÆs proposition is to design new liners for maximum commercial performance. This may mean more frequent changes of liners but with liners designed to yield optimum grinding, metallurgical and profitability performance. In other words, mill liner profiles and mill relining speed become key operational controls and not simply æmust doÆ maintenance functions. Taken to the extreme, liner profiles may prove capable of ætuningÆ a grinding plant for maximum profitability in any metal price environment. This paper provides an update regarding RMEÆs fast, safe Mill Relining System technologies and outlines RMEÆs vision of a æliner profile versus profitabilityÆ model as a function of metal price, developed intuitively or by using a combination of new measurement and modelling technologies. These new measurement and modelling tools provide the opportunity to predict the optimum commercial outcome, off-line in the virtual world, before committing to an expensive liner experiment.

This paper describes the oil engihe plant owned and operated by Gold Mines .of Kalgoorlie Limited, and gives some details of installation, operational, and maintenance experiences which have arisen during the years of service, the last 5 years of which have been under the writer's control. Nos. 1, 2, 3 and 4 alternator units have run 50,276, 48,006, 49,677 and 25,930 hours respectively, and much knowledge has been obtained of their performances and faults. During the war years, it has not been easy to obtain spare parts; this, coupled with the loss of No. 4: alternator unit to the Commonwealth Government, made operation and maintenance a very difficult problem.All engines are of the enclosed vertical, single acting, 4-stroke cycle, airless injection type.The electrical power plant originally consisted of four 6-cylinder Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to Bruce Peebles alternators, running at 375 r.p.m., and generating 3-phase electric power at 3,300 volts, 50 cycles.No. 1 unit, installed in 1936, is a 6-cylinder 450 b.h.p. standard 12A Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engine, direct coupled to 280 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternator. The remaining three units are 6-cylinder, 660 b.h.p., lSA oil cooled piston type Belliss & Morcom heavy oil engines, direct coupled to 410 kw. 0.8 p.f. alternators, making a total capacity of 1,510 kw.No. 4"alternator. unit, an 18A Bellis.& Morcom set, was taken over by the Commonwealth Government in June 1943.

Global annual gold production has been remarkably constant over the last decade at ~2500 t/a3. The major producers today are China (annual production over 350 t and rising), Australia (250 t), USA (240 t), Russia (200 t) and South Africa (190 t and falling); these figures are representative of recent years but approximate. Demand from jewellery, investment, industrial and dental uses has been in excess of mine production for the last decade, by approximately 1000 t/a.Ongoing exploration is the life-blood for gold mining, and more so than for many other metals. Explorers consider sovereign risk, security, labour costs, commercial terms, land availability and inherent geologic prospectivity to determine where to focus their activities. Exploration success over the last decade has been shared by established major producers like Australia, Canada and USA, several countries in West Africa, and many parts of the Pacific margin. Although gold-only deposits have dominated world gold production historically, the gold-plus types, especially copper-gold, are becoming more important.Australia experienced a major period of exploration success from 1979 that has led to annual gold production rising from 17 t in 1979 to 250 - 300 t/a recently. Today, Australia has economic demonstrated resources of over 9000 t Au, which has risen progressively from 220 t in 1979. The majority of production has come from gold-only deposits in the Yilgarn craton in the southern half of Western Australia, but there are a few large Proterozoic deposits in central Australia including Olympic Dam, Telfer and Starra, which are mostly gold-plus types with copper and gold. Large goldfields in the younger host rocks of eastern Australia include the gold-only deposits of Victoria and North Queensland, and gold-plus deposits of New South Wales.CITATION:Phillips, G N, 2013. "Geometallurgy brings together geologists, mine planners and process engineers to extract meaningful mineralogical and textural information from an orebody, with a view to predicting its metallurgical response. Preferably, automated analytical techniques, which provide mineralogical and textural information, should process a large number of samples quickly, relatively inexpensively and reliably. Microfocus X-ray computed tomography (µXCT) is capable of producing 3D volumetric information on texture and mineralogy that satisfies some of these criteria. µXCT has been used extensively to study the porosity and internal pore structure of iron ore pellets as part of downstream processing. It has not been widely applied to earlier mineralogical and textural analysis of unprocessed ore, due to the limited ability of X-rays to penetrate high-density samples. In the last 30 years, human appropriation of global renewable resources has accelerated to the point where 35 per cent of the earthÆs land surface is now in managed agro-ecosystems, consumptive water use consumes between 50 per cent and 85 per cent of freshwater supply and 60 per cent of ecosystem services are utilised in an unsustainable manner. There are virtually no landscapes in which renewable resources are not already fully allocated among different economic and environmental uses. Furthermore, it is increasingly recognised that water availability issues do not exist in isolation but are linked with the related environmental issues of biodiversity preservation, the carbon cycle, soil degradation, and energy use and supply. It is against this background that the sustainable management of water in mining is increasingly developing a strategic viewpoint where water is viewed as a resource within an interconnected landscape, having economic, environmental and social value and providing a range of environmental services in the provision of public and private goods. This paper explores the issues associated with sustainable management of water in mining from a strategic viewpoint. The cumulative impacts of multiple water users, both within and outside the mining sector, is increasingly threatening the security of supply for all users. To quantitatively assess the ætrueÆ value of water it is necessary to: Better understand the science of ecosystem functioning and how human actions impact on environmental processes. Develop appropriate policy, finance and governance structures to support innovative programs that preserve ecosystem function and services (including market based instruments). Apply knowledge as interventions across landscapes in ways that maximise benefits and minimise unintended consequences taking into account differences in the value of water among sectors. A strategic viewpoint of water management relies on knowledge to guide decision making that has been acquired at a range of scales from mine site to mining region. This knowledge must be based on rigorous science, sound data and syntheses of different types of information. Strategic management of water resources will better position the industry in terms of understanding the risks posed by complex, interlinked environmental issues that are increasingly impacting on future access to land and renewable resources, including water, thereby ensuring miningÆs future social licence to operate.

Gold mineralisation was first noted in 1983 at the Wapolu Point area of Fergusson Island, Papua New Guinea (PNG) during a follow-up regional reconnaissance program. Subsequent exploration programs through to late 1987 completed 22,147m of costean trench sampling, 553 aircore/RC/diamond core drill holes (16,970.5m total) and metallurgical testwork, predominantly on the Wapolu grid in two mineralised areas.Subsequently in 1988, geostat-istical global and polygonal resources were calculated for the main mineral-ised zones, Didigayagaya and Dagwalala. In 1992, a 'probable total reserve' of 1.9Mf @ 2.4g/t with a 1.2g/t cut-off was calculated for these prospects.

In order to reveal the correlation between the fundamental sintering characteristics of iron ores and their real sintering behaviours, a comprehensive evaluation index is proposed based on the measurement of four high temperature indexes, ie assimilation temperature, liquid phase bonding strength, liquid fluidity and calcium ferrite formation percentage, and the sintering pot tests of single ore fines and their blends. The results show that both the lowest assimilation temperature and liquid fluidity of ore blends appear to be the linear superposition of those of single iron ores except for the liquid phase bonding strength and calcium ferrite formation percentage. Furthermore, the tumble index of the sinter product obtained from blended iron ores also corresponds to a linear superposition of that of single ores, but not for the solid fuel rate and productivity. The comprehensive strength index YT exhibits a credible linear positive correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes, whereas the comprehensive productivity index YP possesses a lower correlation with the four high temperature reactivity indexes. The recovery of gold from refractory ores and concentrates can be achieved in a number of ways using roasting and leaching procedures. The Sirosmelt system introduces a new approach to the recovery of gold from these materials using smelting procedures. Laboratory studies were carried out to establish procedures for operating the Sirosmelt system for recovery of gold and associated valuable elements from an ore containing 17.5 g/t gold and a concentrate containing 22 g/t gold as well as substantial copper levels. Copper, iron, lead and matte were evaluated as collecting phases for the gold. The ore smelting procedure recovered 80-90% of the gold whilst smelting concentrate gave 98-99% gold recovery.

The increasing availability of marker data in sublevel caving operations is changing the way draw can be managed to achieve positive recovery outcomes in these mines. This paper describes how marker data has been incorporated into flow simulations to help calibrate full mine ore recovery simulations for the forecasting and optimisation of recovery.Some flow modelling techniques do not use marker data, relying instead on the outcomes of physical and numerical experiments to guide assumptions about an idealised recovery flow shape. Other mines have access to marker trial data, but find it difficult to specifically link this marker trial information to their recovery models. This can make it difficult to create a link between the marker trial information and recovery forecasting and limits the potential value of the marker trials at the mine.In the simulations shown here, the marker rings are fully incorporated into the flow model, and can be tracked in the model. The model is compared against the real underground marker recovery information to give the user an indication of how accurately the flow settings in the model are reflecting the conditions in the experimental marker rings. Mining organisations grapple with the same problems year after year, wasting incredible amounts of time and money. According to estimates from the International Labour Organization (ILO), over one million work-related deaths occur annually, and hundreds of millions of workers suffer from workplace accidents and occupational exposure to hazardous substances worldwide. Many accident reports cite human failure as a primary cause (Busse and Johnson, 1998). The workers at the Bhopal chemical plant pumped methyl isocyanate into a leaking tank (Morehouse and Subramaniam, 1986). On 3 December 1984, more than 40 tons of methyl isocyanate gas leaked from a pesticide plant in Bhopal, India, immediately killing at least 3800 people and causing significant morbidity and premature death for many thousands more. The company involved in what became the worst industrial accident in history immediately tried to dissociate itself from legal responsibility (Broughton, 2005). Australia is not spared from safety problems either (Lucas, 2022). The ILO Convention 176 (1995) as a response provides that national law should inter alia provide for the supervision of safety and health in mines; the inspection of mines by designated inspectors of the competent authority; the procedures for reporting and investigating of fatal and serious accidents; the compilation and publication of statistics on accidents, occupational diseases and dangerous occurrences; the competent authority to suspend or restrict mining activities on safety and health grounds until conditions giving rise to the suspension are addressed; and worker consultation on matters related to safety and health in mines. This has assisted in getting enough data to define the magnitude of the problem to the mining sector.

Magnetite orebodies generally means mining lower grade iron ores, crushing and grinding with significant energy costs in processing and the capital costs being significantly higher than for direct shipping ores (DSO). Overseas, the mining and processing of magnetite ores has a long history of production due to the lack of DSO deposits. This raises the question as to why the new magnetite projects have been so problematic and also whether there is a future for the long list of potential magnetite projects in Australia.The quality of the magnetite concentrate product is superior to most DSO products and the magnetite contains energy benefits when converted to hematite in sintering or pelletising. The industry’s hopes for new projects have been dashed and questions are being raised as to the financial viability of such projects.A comparison of Grange Resources Savage River, Arrium’s Project Magnet, the Sino Iron Project and Gindalbie’s Karara Iron Project is used to understand the differences between the projects and why some are more successful than others.CITATION:Connelly, D, 2015. Yandicoogina (Yandi) open pit mine is located in the eastern part of the Pilbara region of Western Australia. It hosts pisolitic iron-oxide mineralisation distributed within a meandering paleoriver channel. The deposit is characterised by clays occurring as lenses, accretions, desiccation joint infill and voids in the pisolite ore. The irregular shapes and highly erratic distribution of these clay pods represent a serious challenge for grade control at this mine.The current grade control approach used at the Yandi mine is based on sampling of production blastholes on a 6 m X 6 m spacing. Their good spatial coverage, tight spacing and low cost make blastholes a very convenient media for grade control and ore-waste definition. However the potential downside of this grade control approach is poor sample representivity. An alternative grade control approach is to drill and sample using reverse circulation (RC) holes distributed on a 25 m X 25 m grid. This approach has been tested in Yandi mine and compared with the blasthole sampling approach for sample representivity. The impact of increased drill spacing on mining block predictions has been studied using a conditional simulation technique. Blasthole and RC samples proved to be similarly biased, underestimating Al2O3 and SiO2 grades and overestimating Fe grades, when compared to full cone assays. These results show that using RC drilling for grade control at the Yandi open pit will not necessarily improve the representivity of the grade control samples. However, increasing the grade control spacing to 25 m X 25 m will lead to more than 12 per cent of the selective mining unit (SMU) sized blocks being misclassified. This is approximately a two-fold increase in the number of misclassified SMU blocks in comparison with 5 m X 5 m spacing.

The Onemana prospect is located on the eastern Coromandel Peninsula, North Island, New Zealand. Systematic exploration involving surface geological mapping, geophysics, rock and soil geochemistry, reverse-circulation and diamond drilling has identified a number of important features of a fossil hydrothermal system at Onemana. This relatively intact gold mineralised system is hosted within a sequence of rhyolitic volcanics and volcaniclastics, overlain by lake sediments, sinters and hydrothermal eruption breccia. The system lies within a graben/half graben bounded by major NE-trending faults which form the approximate boundaries to hydrothermal alteration. Rock and soil geochemistry indicate a broad zone of anomalous gold, silver, arsenic, mercury and antimony. Overlapping elevated rock and soil gold anomalies indicate strongest mineralisation occurs over two zones of hydrothermal brecciation named 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Geophysical data obtained from Gradient Array Resistivity and Ground Magnetics have been used to produce anomaly maps. The terrain corrected resistivity plot shows a number of well defined linear resistivity anomalies which are believed to represent large silicified and quartz veined bodies at relatively shallow depths. The strongest of these anomalies correspond with 'Breccia Knob' and 'Western Ridge'. Reverse-circulation and diamond drilling targeting these resistivity and geochemical anomalies has confirmed wide intervals of quartz veining, silicification and gold mineralisation. Petrologic data based on drill samples indicates the existence of a laterally extensive gold bearing epithermal system. Hydrothermal alteration is thought to have been caused by strongly convecting, two-phase (boiling), near-neutral chloride fluids which persisted at high temperatures (170 - 220¦C) to the paleosurface. A geological model is postulated of a large, complex, hydrothermal system developed in a shallow lake or marginal lake environment created by rifting and graben development within a recently extinct rhyolitic volcanic centre. Geothermal activity alternated between relatively quiescent periods of unrestricted fluid upflow and sinter development interspersed with violent hydrothermal eruptions caused by near surface silica capping and overpressuring above a major fluid conduit centred under 'Breccia Knob'.  Opportunities for precious metal mineralisation are evident from drilling to date. Upflow of near-neutral chloride fluids to shallow depths favours the presence of strongly mineralised stockworks at relatively shallow depths. Periodic hydrothermal eruptions would have caused fracturing and rapid depressurisation of the hydrothermal system, strongly favouring the precipitation of gold from solution both near surface and within feeder-vein systems at depth.

By using knowledge-based technology to create a Virtual Mining Enterprise and integrating it with existing technical and financial computer systems, a gold mining company has been able to reduce the time taken to produce a mine plan from 14 weeks to less than one week. Typically, the mine planning process requires circulating and managing large amounts of information. Even with the use of computers in todayÆs business, this is often still a manual process involving file transfers and individualised spreadsheets. Mine planning also involves understanding and managing large quantities of complex and interrelated variables. Added to this is the ever changing dynamics and constraints associated with the business of mining. These issues not only hamper the planning process but also question the validity and usefulness of the mine plans being generated. By integrating the information and knowledge of the numerous departments involved in mine planning into one core Knowledge Base - so called æone version of the truthÆ, - mining companies are able to overcome these pitfalls experienced in traditional planning methods. Once set up, the Knowledge Base creates and runs a virtual mining enterprise with which to visualise and test various scenarios of mining, business and logistical activities. The final output is an optimised enterprise-wide plan with clear and detailed instructions for each of the divisions of the company.

Morwell Open Cut is a continuous mining operation employing 5 buck- etwheel excavators, I bucket chain excavator and 54 conveyors. The combined bunkering capacity at both client Power Stations represents less than 12 hours maximum coal demand. This creates an extremely dynamic operating environment, which is further complicated with significant variations in both excavating and transportation plant capabilities. To achieve set objectives, including- I adequate reserves, 2 coal supply reliability, 3 cyclic plant maintenance, 4 minimal cost of coal, scheduling of the operation requires constant monitoring and reappraisal. Investigations are in progress to develop a computer based scheduling tool capable of simulating the complex operating environment. A review of computer scheduling packages currently available within the State Electricity Commission of Victoria has found limitations making most unsuitable for the task. The type of package found to be most suited is a knowledge based system ('Expert System')capable of operating within a set of rules defined by the user. Work is proceeding on the development of a knowledge base to test the effectiveness of Personal Computer based `Expert Systems'.

The 5.6 km Canning Tunnel was constructed to improve water supply from Canning Dam to the Perth metropolitan area. The site area is in the Darling Range which is essentially a laterite-capped plateau-remnant underlain by Archaean granitic rocks, intruded by dolerite. Two arrangements were available. After geotechnical investigations which included geological mapping, seismic refraction geo- physics, diamond drilling and mechanical rock testing, a single tunnel was selected in pre- ference to two short tunnels and a connecting pipeline. The tunnel is hydraulically equivalent to a fully lined tunnel 1.83 m in diameter and 5 580 m long. The alignment diverged from a straight line so that the initial upstream section was almost normal to the contours which allowed for minimal support requirements in a weathered zone. Although steel and con- crete lining was needed at both ends, the main section of the tunnel was unlined except for a concrete floor. A sand and rock trap with a capacity of 46 m3 was constructed near the outlet portal to collect debris and sand down to a size of about 2 mm. Portal excavations were in highly to completely weathered rock which extended 56 m into the tunnel at the upstream end, and 18 m at the downstream end. The metallurgical has been discussed sufficiently for the reader to follow the course of the experiments but the actual plant has only been described in so far as it effected metallurgical treatment, since the arrangement of such a smelter is a matter of common knowledge.The lead-roasting plant consisted of Godfrey roaster, Dwight-Lloyd maehines and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. The usual treatment was in the Godfrey furnaces, followed by sintering in the Huntingdon- Heberlein pots. The paper is divided into two parts in the Godfrey furnaces and Huntingdon-Heberlein pots. The 335 000 oz Wilber Deposit is located within the Meekatharra-Wydgee Archaean greenstone belt in the Murchison District of Western Australia. The deposit comprises high-grade gold mineralisation hosted within a steeply west-dipping quartz lode, which lies within a broader (20–60?m) north-east striking shear zone envelope. Locally, the northerly-trending host rock geology includes greenschist facies high-Mg basalt (albite, actinolite, chlorite, biotite, calcite, zoisite, muscovite and titanate) intruded by at least two generations of felsic to intermediate porphyries (albite, actinolite, zoisite, chlorite, sericite, biotite, quartz and titanate). The Archaean rocks are cross-cut by a number of east–west striking Proterozoic dolerite dykes (biotite (50 per cent), albite, carbonate, epidote, titanate and actinolite) that are interpreted to have intruded pre-existing regional structures. The entire mine package is cross-cut by a system of shallow north-east-striking, north-west-dipping, barren quartz veins that commonly contain large (up to 30 cm), euhedral, smokey quartz megacrysts.The north-east-trending lode lies within a 3 m wide shear zone and varies from a single discrete 0.5 to 4 m wide laminated, massive or brecciated quartz-carbonate vein to multiple laminated veins up to 1 m wide within the shear. The veins exhibit strong boudinage, with cross-cutting quartz-carbonate seal veins in the boudin necks. The boudin necks often contain pink calcite. The shear zone fabric wraps closely around the boudin necks proximal to the vein, becoming more lode parallel distal to the vein. The lode is offset by a north to north-north-west trending fault.Mineralisation occurs as free gold within the quartz carbonate veins, with accessory sulfides including pyrite ± chalcopyrite, ± galena ± sphalerite. Fuchsite is observed in the veins, as laminar wall rock inclusions, with visible gold commonly associated with the wall rock laminations.Gold grades range from less than 1 g/t within the hosting shear zone, either at the margins or interstitial to the veins, to approximately 30 g/t in the single vein, and up to greater than 60 g/t in the multiple vein areas.
