New Zealand Steel Mining Limited operates two independent sand mining operations on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand. (Fig. 1)Waikato North Head 30km south of Auckland supplies ironsand concentrate as the raw feed for New Zealand Steel's works at Glenbrook, and Taharoa 70km further south, exports ironsand concentrate to Japan. Taharoa uses two sets of six low pressure Warman centrifugal pumps in series to load bulk ore carriers 3km off shore through two underwater pipelines.Waikato North Head delivers the ironsand to Glenbrook l8kms through a 200mm ID buried pipeline using two stages of high pressure positive displacement (HPPD) pumping.A high level of operating and maintenance expertise has been developed since commissioning the two systems which are proving to be reliable, efficient and of minimal impact environmentally.

A new algorithm has been investigated for three-dimensional open pit designs to improve the dynamic cone approach which utilises the dynamic programming technique. The conventional dynamic cone method was improved by introducing examination processes: 1. whether any negative blocks are included in a unit cone or not; and 2. whether it is possible or not to leave the negative blocks unmined in the unit cone without disturbing the geometric condition imposed on the slope angle of the cone. The newly developed algorithm was applied to a large-scale open pit copper mine in a planning stage and the results have been compared with those obtained by the conventional methods.

THE Great Fitzroy Mines Limited, comprising an area of 183 acres, and held under lease, are situated at Mt. Chalmers, within the Cawarral goldfield, 18 miles from the city of Rockhampton, Queensland, on the Rockhampton-Yeppoon railway.The nearest railway station i; Mt. Ohalmers, distant about half a mile from the mine, with which it is connected by a fairly good road. The outcrop of the ore-body consists almost entirely of ironstained quartzite, no sign of copper being visible. The outcrop and its immediate vicinity have been worked intermittently for gold during the past :fifty years, the ore being amenable to battery treatment.About twenty years ago a company was formed to prospect this outcrop, and work was commenced by driving an adit, but the results proved disappointing, and work ceased. Later a party of prospectors sunk a winze from the adit level, which has sincedeveloped into wh~t is now known as the North shaft. The property was afterwards prospected by Messrs. Oharley and Osborne, who continued sinking the winze, meeting with sulphides at a depth of about 120 ft.The Mt. Chalmers Copper Mining Company was formed to work the property, and smelting operations started on a small scale. These, however, met with ip.different success, and the property was again abandoned.

The detection of ethylene in mined-out ‘goaf’ areas of underground coalmines is an industry standard indicator of accelerated oxidation where the coal temperature has exceeded 100°C. If uncontrolled, this naturally occurring process can lead to spontaneous combustion and catastrophic mine explosions, such as the Moura No 2 mine explosion. Spontaneous combustion trigger action response plans (TARPs) typically use the detection of ethylene as a trigger for definite change requiring immediate reaction, which can include the withdrawal of coalmine workers.Following the completion of sealing of longwall goaves at Crinum North Mine, ethylene was often detected in trace quantities. These trace quantities were below 1 ppm and detected via the bag sampling regime, with the use of a gas chromatograph. Any ethylene detected in these instances was not associated with increased quantities of carbon monoxide to conclusively indicate a heating within the sealed area.Ethylene was only detected in a newly sealed goaf and would not remain present for a period following the sealing. As part of the longwall recovery process, the predominant roof support mechanism during the recovery was the use of timber cribs. It was decided to investigate the possibility of this timber generating ethylene.Preliminary tests were completed by placing timber specimens from several species of Australian native hardwoods in gas bags in air. Technology is playing an increasingly large role in the operations of our mines. There is a temptation to regard the implementation of technological systems as the objective itself when, in reality, systems are used to support a business process. Only when the process succeeds will the systems be seen to succeed. Understanding the distinction between system and process is critical. This understanding, together with the resultant holistic approach, is considered to be critical to successful implementation and operation of Mine Control process. This paper examines the critical factors essential to success in establishing and sustaining a Mine Control process that maximises benefits to an operation. These factors have been developed during the author's experience of nearly 30 years in Mine Control projects across over 50 sites. Each factor is discussed in relation to real world examples at well-known mines.

MR. L. C. BALL, chief government geologist, Queensland, wrote: This paper is intended as a severely mechanical exposition of the means adopted to deal with tremendous inflows of water concurrently with development and exploitation; but incidentally it serves as a splendid exposition of close co-operation maintained between the geological and engineering branches of this large organization.I have been impressed by the completeness of the mine plans of 'Mount Isa Mines Ltd.; but only such a paper as this has brought fully to my understanding the difficulty and complexity of the solid geometry involved in the detection and plotting of the orebodies and their stratigraphic control, including faults and large-scale brecciations, and the managerial foresight that set going the initial investigations.The company's geological branch of course must be given full credit for the results attained, but it gives me pleasure that the Geological Survey of Queensland has been closely associated in much of the study.It is noted that complete drainage was affected, but it would be interesting to learn whether the brecciated zone will again become waterlogged and whether from above or from below, and whether there has been any change in the dissolved mineral content of the water as the work progressed.

The Bradford Process, Australian Patent No. 11253, has had considerable application in the treatment plants of Broken Hill mining companies, and is at present being used by the North Broken Hill Limited for the treatment of weathered slime accumulations.The "Mining and Scientific Press," of 28th September, 1918, describes the Bradford Process at Broken Hill, specially featuring its application to slime material at the Proprietary mine-the home of the process.The points then stressed for galena flotation were acidulated slime pulp (0.025 to 0.030% H2S04) at temperature 85° to 90° F. and suitable time contact, with 1.5 to 2 lb. of sodium hyposulphite (per ton on slime) to permit the released S02 to "wet" or depressthe blende mineral. Also 1.0 to 1.3 lb. of crude sulphur (per ton on slime) was burnt, to supply S02 for keeping the lead concentrate clean during flotation. Pulp density varied from 23 to 26% solids. Since 1918 the process has been simplified in its application.Acidity of circuit, temperature, and sodium hyposulphite have been dispensed with, and now the S02 is practically all obtained by burning crude sulphur. I The plant units now employed for control and absorption of S02 gas constitute the main advance made in process, and these, with other details, are fully explained in this paper.APPLICATION AT BROKEN HILL NORTHThe existing North Broken Hill Limited gravity mill commenced operations on 9th September, 1909.

The design of crawler-mounted conveyor belts installed for the handling of brown coal in open cuts is described.INTRODUCTIONThe State Electricity Commission of Victoria operates two brown coal open cuts at Yallourn, Victoria. The larger of these cuts produces n million tons per year of brown coal containing 67 per cent. moisture, and the smaller, at Yallourn North, produces 1-1 million tons of coal, with a moisture content of 50 per cent. A further open cut at Morwell with projected output of 9-10 million tons per year is in the course of development. In the larger Yallourn open cut coal is excavated by means of conventional bucket chain and bucket wheel dredgers and transport is by electric locomotives and saddle bottom trucks running on 90 cm. gauge railway tracks. At Yallourn North, coal until recently has been largely won by 3i and 5 cu. yd. electric shovels and transported by large diesel-enginedmotor trucks. The difficulty of keeping these trucks in operation during the winter periods owing to the v.ery wet conditions and the high cost of maintenance of these vehicles led to the introduction of a moving face conveyor system.EXISTING CONVEYOR INSTALLATION AT YALLOURN NORTHA conveyor system employing a 36-in. belt running at a speed of 400 ft. per minute and having a nominal capacity of 425 tons per hour with 50-h.p. drive units, was selected as appropriate for the output of the open cut. It's the most rugged part of Tasmania and our island is one of the most rugged parts of Australia, so that speaks for itself. A hostile land of razorback mountains, deep ravines, dangerous rivers, almost impenetrable rainforests and a climate that can change from mild to freezing in a matter of hours.

Developing and operating mines in developing countries is never dull, but continuously challenging in terms of geology and terrain, geography and location, culture and land tenure, environmental and social issues, fiscal regimes and in some cases political risk. In addition, the rapidly changing nature of the communities with little understanding of the nature of mining at the community level requires us to continually manage issues affecting project development and mine operations with greater sensitivity. In frontier regions, people skills can become more essential than technical skills, particularly in dealing with indigenous people. Hence, managing a mining project requires a huge relationship effort.Effective communication with communities of different cultural background and proactive management of issues influencing community aspirations and desires requires not only new skills but also creativity with new concepts on how to deal with social issues under a different cultural context. The involvement of government agencies and NGOs is an important ingredient to creating understanding and collaborative approaches to common social issues. Maintaining stakeholder relationships pays in the long-run and is a useful exercise in getting information feedback from the wider community.

The last 20 years have seen a dramatic rise in the use of 3D visualisation and modelling for geological data, but there has been relatively little effort to do the same for the variogram models that underpin the standard estimation algorithms used by the mining industry.For kriging, one of the most used geostatistical estimation methods, specifying a variogram model is a critical part of the modelling process. Experimental variography is the primary method for approximating the theoretical variogram function from the available sample data, and then determining an appropriate variogram model from the approximations.The traditional tools used for experimental variography are limited to looking at subsets of the data and are often presented without reference to geographic space and geology. It can be difficult to know what input data is being used for a particular experimental variogram, and whether there is enough support in the experimental variograms to propose an appropriate model.To overcome these limitations, an innovative approach called situational variography has been proposed that visualises variograms in 3D alongside contextual geological and geometric data. Presenting variograms in this manner aids understanding of how the spatial variance relates to the underlying data.A 3D extension of the 2D radial variogram maps will be investigated which allows for dynamic exploration of the full experimental variogram cloud. This paper analyses problems associated with cement based technique in metal mines, and provides a new mining technique of packing the tailing sand and water into solidified material. In the new technique, the cementing agent is a solidifying material containing a high percentage of water and tailing sand. The sand and water solidify into the packed body at the same time. The slurry of the packed body varies widely in concentration and suitability for different mining conditions. It consists of two liquid materials, each composed of a cementing agent, tailing sand and water. The thick liquids are transported to the packing place at the same time. Their pumping property is good; they do not solidify or block up the pipe during transportation. At the packing place, the two liquids are evenly mixed.The mixed liquid flattens out well and its solidifying speed is so fast that it solidifies into a packed body within a very short period of time. The compressed strength of the packed body can reach 1.2-5MPa in one day, which satisfies the requirements of different mining conditions. By using the new mining technique, all the tailing sand can be used again in the packed body and it is low in cost and investment. The mechanisation is easy and thus the working efficiency is increased and the use of labour decreased. Contamination problems caused by i. The rocks of New Zealand can be grouped into three main elements: the Early to Mid Paleozoic Western Province, Late Paleozoic to Early Cretaceous Eastern Province, and several overlying Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins. The Western and Eastern provinces were formed on or near the margin of Gondwanaland, whereas the Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic sedimentary basins developed after the separation of New Zealand from Gondwanaland in the Late Cretaceous.   The Early to Mid Paleozoic Western Province rocks are exposed in Nelson, Westland and Fiordland and include metamorphosed sandstone, mudstone, limestone, and volcanic rocks, intruded by granite batholiths and maficultramafic igneous complexes. The main associated mineral deposits are gold-quartz lodes hosted by Paleozoic greywacke and argillite. Other type of deposits present include: volcanogenic massive sulphide lead-zinc; vein and greisen tungsten and tin; and magmatic nickel-copper sulphide, platinum group element, and magnetiteilmenite deposits. Granite stocks and batholiths, intruded during the Cretaceous, have associated porphyry molybdenum deposits.   The Late Paleozoic to Early Cretaceous Eastern Province includes the greywacke rocks forming the axial ranges of the North and South islands, and a belt of schists in Marlborough, the Southern Alps and Otago. The schists host many shear-zone related, gold-quartz lodes and, in the Southern Alps, lenses of serpentinite with talcmagnesite and nephrite jade. Volcanogenic massive sulphide copper deposits and volcanogenic manganesechert deposits, occur in both the schist and greywacke, and a belt of Permian age ultramafic rocks (Dun Mountain Ophiolite) has associated copper, chromite and chrysotile asbestos deposits.   The Late Cretaceous to Cenozoic rocks are found in a number of sedimentary basins onshore and offshore of the North and South Islands. Many of these basins developed during the rifting of New Zealand from Gondwanaland in the Late Cretaceous. They contain New Zealand's economic petroleum, coal and limestone deposits. Uplift and erosion of the mountain ranges shed gold into rich placer deposits in the South Island.   From the Miocene, volcanic rocks feature prominently on the eastern South Island (e.g. Banks Peninsula southeast of Christchurch and the Otago Peninsula northeast of Dunedin) and northern North Island (Northland and Hauraki), and volcanism continues today in the Taupo Volcanic Zone. The North Island volcanic rocks have associated epithermal mineralisation, mainly gold and silver, but also copper, lead, zinc, mercury, and antimony, as well as deposits of sulphur, perlite, pumice and zeolite. Porphyry copper style mineralisation is associated with subvolcanic intrusive rocks. Erosion of the volcanic rocks has shed titanomagnetite onto the west coast of the North Island forming significant coastal placer deposits. Similarly, erosion of the Alpine schists in the South Island has resulted in placer ilmenite deposits on the coast of Westland.

The green field discovery of a two million ounce high-grade refractory gold ore deposit in the Indonesian Province of Sulawesi Utara, led Newmont to utilise its proven technical expertise in dry grinding and whole ore roasting to develop a 2000 tonne per day, 160 000 ounce per year operation in this remote and picturesque location.Located at an elevation of 250 in above sea level and ten kilometres to a deep water natural harbour, the hard rock open pit mine, process plant and infrastructure facilities were built to budget at a capital cost of US$132 million. The plant was commissioned with oxide ore, with the first gold poured in March 1996 and with refractory ore in January 1997. The operation rapidly met its production targets because of extensive forward planning and training programs developed for the local workforce. The presence of steep topography, fertile coastal plains, high rainfall, high seismicity of this location led to the decision to dispose of neutralised tailings in deep water off the coast instead of impounding tailings in a dam. This paper describes the development of the project and the challenges in developing a gold operation in a remote location which lacked infrastructure, the steps taken to ensure a smooth commissioning, and the selection of the workforce to operate a technically sophisticated facility.

Mining law has developed in Great Britain (GB) over centuries, mainly in response to lessons learned after disasters and other major incidents. This has led to a culture of preventing repeat accidents, rather than predicting and controlling unsafe acts or conditions.This paper explains how, initially in response to a government drive to reduce the burden on industry, the opportunity was taken to review and reform all 48 sets of GB mining-specific law into a single document. Alkalis in the blast furnace are removed mainly by the slag, Alkali removal by the slag was studied as a rate process of alkali vapor- ization from the slag flowing through the dropping zone in the blast furnace. The vapor-, ization rate of I:20 from CaO-Si02-A1203 IZ20 slag was- measured under various experimental conditions. An empirical formula for the vaporization rate was obtained as a function of slag basicity, temperature and surface area per unit mass of slag. A simulation model of IC20 vaporization in the dropping zone was evaluated using the rate equation when the true velocity and surface area of the slag was de- termined from a flow dynamic model of counter- current gas-liquid flow through packed beds. The influence of the dynamic conditions of flow, as well as the slag basicity and temperature, on alkali removal by the slag was estimated.

The Central Extended Orebody is located within the Cracow Goldfield approximately 360 km northwest of Brisbane and approximately 220 km west of Bundaberg. It is an epithermal gold deposit hosted by the Late Carboniferous to Early Permian Camboon Andesite. The lode was mined by open cut methods and produced 170 458 tonnes of ore at 5.62 g/t gold.The geology of the rit is relatively simple, comprising two rock types, trachyandesite and rhyolite which have been sub-divided into several units. The trachyandesite is sub-divided into three rock types: brecciated trachyandesite which is the most widespread, hydraulically fractured trachyandesite hosts the mineralisation and the third sub-unit is chloritised hydraulically fractured trachyandesite and has no associated mineralisation. The mineralisation is confined to quartz veins in hydraulically fractured trachyandesite. Several phases of brecciation and subsequent quartz and quartz/adularia vein injection are evident although not all phases are mineralised. Two rhyolite dykes intrude the trachyandesite one is monolithic, the other is sub-divided into hydraulically fractured rhyolite (barren), silicified rhyolite and auto-brecciated rhyolite.
