I am honoured and very pleased to have been given the opportunity this evening to say a few words of thanks not only on behalf of all the guests but especially for the delegates and accompanying persons attending the 13th Congress of the Council of Mining and Metallurgical Institutions. Firstly, I would like to congratulate Sir Hamilton Whyte,KCMG for his most interesting address. In his far ranging talk, when he showed knowledge of widely diverse subjects, I had a brief fear that he was going to be talking about the details of support methods in deep level mines, or how to avoid flotation problems in multi-metal mines. Although he did not go that far, he touched on subjects which have arisen this week - long term planning and secure supply of minerals at acceptable prices. The dire predictions of the Club of Rome have been debunked with a far more elastic supply of minerals having been proved. Combined with the importance of a falling birthrate in some parts of the world, this will lead to many changes in the future, when hopefully governments will take the long term view rather than look at the next budget or the next election. Maybe some of them are not too lazy to do this for all of us. However as a fellow Ukranian, I feel that he might have been called something different if he had been in Australia. Sir Hamilton, thank you for your talk. Once upon a time - and this is not a fairy story - there was a cobbler who had two sons; one very bright who became a professor of mathematics; the other, dim, who became a millionaire shoemaker. Asked for the secret of his success, the millionaire attributed it to a vital piece of economics which his father had imparted, "Be content with small margins on a large turnover." "So", said the millionaire, "I make my shoes for $2 a pair and sell them for $5. I am very happy with the three per cent profit."

In order to enhance the roasting behaviours and metallurgical properties of hematite pellets, which have the problems of high roasting temperature and low compressive strength, a process of producing Brazilian hematite pellets by adding high sulfur magnetite was developed in this paper, and process parameters have been optimised. It is shown that the roasting temperature decreases from 1320¦C to 1200¦C by adding 30 per cent of high sulfur magnetite. New Fe2O3 crystal oxidised from Fe3O4 is more active, which is beneficial to induration of pellet. When the ratio of magnetite increased to 50 per cent, only about 90¦C of the roasting temperature was decreased. Higher ratio of high sulfur magnetite causes more porosity of pellets because of oxidative desulfurisation, which is harmful to the strength of roasted pellets. The reduction disintegration index (RDI), presently RDI+3.15 of product pellets is aggrandised from 87.79 per cent to 99.54 per cent and 97.55 per cent, and the reduction swelling index (RSI) is lowered from 36.25 per cent to 12.50 per cent and 6.25 per cent respectively, by adding 30 per cent and 50 per cent of high sulfur magnetite. The compressive strength of roasted pellets is elevated obviously by adding high sulfur magnetite, which resists the inner stress of pellets during reduction process, so as to enhance the RDI and reduce the RSI of product pellets. In addition, the inner porosity may be filled by the swelling during the reduction process, which can also lower the RSI. The process provides a low power consumption of making hematite pellets that high sulfur magnetite can decrease roasting temperature significantly and improve the metallurgical properties of hematite pellets dramatically.CITATION:Zhu, D, Zhou, W, Pan, J and Li, Z, 2013. Three volcanic sequences of different ages occur close together in the Burdekin Falls area, southeast of Charters Towers in northeastern Queensland. The oldest is equated with the Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor Volcanics, and consists mostly of strongly deformed, regionally metamorphosed rhyolitic lava and minor feldspathic to quartzose sandstone. This unit is overlain by folded but unmetamorphosed Upper Devonian-Lower Carboniferous volcanics (DCv) of the lowermost Drummond Basin sequence. The primary volcanic facies of (DCv) principally comprises andesitic and rhyolitic lavas, and dacitic ignimbrites. Similar volcanics are widespread in the lowest formations of the Drummond Basin sequence elsewhere, and dominate that sequence east of the Anakie Inlier. The youngest volcanic sequence is Late Carboniferous and composed of lower, more deformed, compositionally diverse ignimbrites, lavas and conglomerates, overlain by generally less deformed rhyolitic ignimbrite sheets. The upper part is equated with the Bulgonunna Volcanics which extend 90km south to the Mt Coolon area. The Burdekin Falls area contains an ignimbrite stratigraphy different from that in the south. However, one of the most voluminous ignimbrites (Locharwood Rhyolite) in the southern stratigraphy is also present in the north, enabling the two to be correlated.Each of the three volcanic sequences reflects proximity to eruptive sources. Both the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin sequence and the Late Carboniferous volcanics are largely the products of subaerial eruptions. The former were erupted from several intermediate-composition volcanoes, and the latter from multiple-vent silicic calderas. All three sequences are considered to be prospective for precious and/or base metal mineralisation. Polymetallic massive sulphide deposits occur in the Mt Windsor Volcanics farther west, and many epithermal gold prospects and mines are hosted by the volcanics at the base of the Drummond Basin, especially east of the Anakie Inlier. The Late Carboniferous volcanic sequence is deeply eroded, and co-magmatic high-level plutons are widely exposed; this sequence may therefore be more prospective for deeper-than-epithermal mineral deposits.

Strategies and achievements in the Asian steel industry to construct industrial ecological chain are reviewed largely in the case of Japan, Korea and China. Emphasis is placed on the development of resource circulatory system for the minimisation of various wastes and emissions of green house gases (GHG), toxic gases and polluting particulates. The minimisation includes:Rationalisation of iron and steelmaking processes; Implementation of available relevant measures/technologies; Life cycle assessment in designing steel from semis to assembled products; Reduction, reuse and recycling of materials and energies; and Utilisation of core competence technologies to process domestic and industrial wastes. In view of global nature of the above wastes- and emission-issues, inter-industrial linkage and international cooperation across the borders in the Asian countries have become more important. Inter-industrial linkage definitely serves to cut back the wastes and emissions. Examples of such linkage and factors influencing the sustainability of the linkage are described with expectation for further development of the linkage. Importance of international cooperation cannot be overstressed under the circumstances where steel production in China exceeded 220 Mt and world production exceeded 945 Mt in 2003 and is still increasing. Practical measures are discussed to enhance the linkage and cooperation for effectively promoting the reduction, reuse and recycling, including implications for the nonferrous industry.

Recently there has been increased recognition o'f the cost savings that can be achieved by the greater use of offsite preassembly for the construction of industrial plants. Preassembly is a method of construction which involves considerable offsite assembly of complete sections of an industrial plant in established fabrication shops. The preassemblies are transported to the plant site, often by large and oversize transport systems where they are set on prepared foundations, finished and interconnected to other sections of the plant as required. The concept of preassembly is not new, but widespread interest has been shown because site construction costs in all parts of the world have increased rapidly and often at a greater rate than in established fabrication areas. Particular interest has be focused on remote, isolated and inhospitable plant site locations. These areas require the import of skilled labour, the payment of high labour rate premiums and the development of infrastructure to support the workforce for the duration of the construction period.

Whilst decisions to commit projects have traditionally been heavily influenced by hurdle rates for d.c.f. analysis, it is suggested that evaluation of competitors' costs may be a desirable additional tool.The MICAS system developed over the past four years is described. This computer system uses standard costs modified by District and Mine factors to allow estimation of individual mine costs. The data base contains more than 15,000 items of data and more than 6000 costs are calculated.Recent applications include use for competitive analysis, predictive analysis, statistical analysis, and comparative assessments with scopes ranging from a few mines to the whole Australian export industry. Some areas where care is necessary are outlined and potential further uses are discussed.

Trojan Nickel Mine is the largest producer of Ni, Cu and Co in Zimbabwe. The mine has operated a nickel flotation concentrator and base metal refinery continuously since 1969, creating 28 million tonnes of sulfide bearing tailings, five million tonnes of permanent waste rock and about seven million tonnes of smelter slag. Exposure of the sulfide bearing minerals renders them susceptible to oxidation in the presence of water and oxygen, resulting in acidic solutions with elevated concentrations of total dissolved solids, sulfate, metals and residual flotation chemicals in various waters draining from the mine site. These pollutants pose a direct threat to the environment and human health, and understanding their deportment and behaviour in the various waste streams is essential in the mineÆs environmental objectives to prevent or minimise adverse impacts arising from its operations. A geochemical assessment of the pollutants was carried out to compute a mass balance between the major sources of pollution and the distribution and fate of pollutants in waste streams from the mine site. Waste rock, tailings, surface water, ground water and sediments were sampled, tested and analysed. Mineral composition and water chemistry data show that geochemical reactions are responsible for the release of pollutants from waste rock, tailings and plant spills. Drainage from the mine area is near neutral due to buffering by magnesium carbonates in the fine fraction of the tailings. The natural wetlands that exist downstream of the waste rock and tailings dams are effective in reducing metal loadings to water courses. However, solutes and heavy metals are occasionally released to surface and ground water, when their concentrations peak during the dry season. The results demonstrate the necessity to understand the natural chemical processes that characterise the distribution of pollutants in nature and how such knowledge can be used to develop cost effective methods to remediate pollution in the natural environment.

A combination of the needs of business, employee desires and safety and health considerations is stimulating increasing attention to the time spent by people at work and the timing of that work. Particularly we are seeing: - innovative work schedules for 24-hour mining businesses; and - response from industry to accommodate the needs, even the desires, of employees in return for systems which are more productive and more capital efficient. There appears to be an evolutionary trend for business management to become more sophisticated and responsive to the need for achieving close to best cost work schedules to sustain continuous improvement. The underlying motivating forces driving this trend for improved techniques in organising attendance at, and time spent at work, is the seemingly inseparable combination of technological advance and ever-increasing accumulation of capital. The mining industry has not remained untouched by this thrust for ever-increasing need for best use of labour, to adopt advances in technology and to provide attractive opportunities for putting accumulated capital to work. An essential component of this on-going thrust is a substantial effort by the mining industry to improve the performance of labour by providing most-productive work schedules.

A laminar-flow furnace was used to study the combustion of four flotation concentrates (chalcopyrite, pyrite, galena, and sphalerite) in air at temperatures up to 1400¦C. A special- Iv developed two-colour pyrometer was used to measure the temperature of individual chalco- pvrite and pyrite particles as they underwent combustion. Chalcopyrite and pyrite ignited with very high rates of reaction at air tempera- tures above 480 and 600¦C respectively, forming molten products. Galena and sphalerite required temperatures in excess of 700 and 1200¦ respect- ively to attain equivalent rates of reaction. The high rates of reaction for galena and spha- lerite were caused by vaporization. Paste back-fill technology is gaining rapid acceptance in the Canadian mining industry. The authors were able to work on four different mining sites employing paste technology in their operation. In each site the paste hackfll is prepared with very fine tailings containing significant amounts of sulphur minerals. The research program involved laboratory testing on samples prepared in the laboratory, on control samples obtained at the hackfilll plant during pouring into the stopes and on core samples obtained from drilling in backfilled stopes. The laboratory testing provided detailed knowledge of the mechanical behavior of the paste backfill. The need for a means of measuring the in-situ mechanical properties of the backfill became clear. A review of various trials published in literature and an evaluation of available technology suggested the Cambridge Self-boring Pressuremeter. A first field campaign confirmed the efficiency and dependability of this instrument leading to the conclusion that it offers a very good method for the in-situ measurement of paste backfill properties.

A discrete event computer simulation model was developed for two of the stoping methods currently used at the Z.C. Mines Broken Hill oper- ations. The objective in undertaking this project was to provide an effective tool for mine planning and design to allow comparisons of alternative extraction strategies and attempt to optimise the allocation of capital equipment and human resources. The Slam II simulation program was used in conjunction with ,a com- monly used data editor, text editor and graphics package to allow the simulation to be done on a personal computer with minimum training requirements. The computer hardware used was a portable computer cur- rently available using 80386/20MHz electronics. Specific logic techniques were developed to allow the Slam II language to simulate mining opera- tions because it was originally developed for manufacturing and com- mercial simulations. The design of the model was based on observations and a data collec- tion campaign. The model was designed with flexibility which allows simple editing of the input data which includes: - Insitu volumes - Development statistics -Loadout efficiencies -Loader speeds, availabilities and capacities -Chute numbers, volumes, distances and blockage statistics -Trucking statistics -Work schedules -Utility statistics

"Although the role of texture has been increasingly recognised as a geometallurgical indicator of ore characteristics and their variability, the ability to appropriately quantify and correlate it with metallurgical performance remains an ongoing challenge. In this study, we propose the 3D characterisation and quantification of ore textures from drill core using X-ray computed tomography (XCT) with an appropriate image analysis methodology (grey level co-occurrence matrices, GLCM). This methodology has been specially customised for application of 3D XCT grey-scale volumes. This approach has potential as an online mine site analysis tool providing detailed 3D information on both quantitative texture and simple mineralogy.The approach is illustrated in this paper using drill core samples that were manually extracted from various rock types and textures representing the Nkomati Main Mineralized Zone (MMZ) sulfide nickel ore deposit. A preliminary classification of the samples was performed based on their particle size distribution after laboratory scale rod milling. Accompanying QEMSCAN analyses were also used to guide the interpretation of the grey-scale mineralogy and texture in the 3D XCT volumes. The resultant GLCM produced from quantitative 3D image analysis of the XCT volumes indicated sensitivity to ore variability and was able to capture a simple mineralogy and grain size distribution. The Mangani mine in West Sumatra is historically one of the most important precious metal mines in Indonesia, although the past production by World standards is small, totall- ing 5.66 tonnes gold and 242 tonnes silver. The geology is dominated by a distinctive NW-SE graben structure formed by dextral splay faults from the Sumatran Fault System. Quartz- rhodochrosite-rhodonite-Ag-Au veins are hosted by Tertiary pyroxene andesite volcanics and quartz-phyllite conglomerates, on N-S tensional fractures which intersect the Mangani graben. Intrusive rocks include andesitic dykes, pyroxene microdiorite, and hornblende granodiorite. Quartz-epidote-pyrrhotite alteration is related to concealed intrusions. Precious metal vein mineralization is characterized by: high Ag/Au ratio (>25); complex sulphide mineralogy of Fe, Mn, Ag, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, Se and the occurrence of Sn as stannite; low total sulphide content (

Maghemite - A Source of Heavy Medium for Coal Washeries Use of magnetite as heavy medium in coal preparation plants has been increasing steadily in recent years. It might be in short supply in some areas or excessively costly in certain times. In Turkey, the cost of heavy medium magnetite has almost tripled since 2003. As a result, alternative sources of heavy medium material have been evaluated. A maghemite ore from Elbistan-Kahramanmaras was found to be an interesting source. Tests showed that the maghemite ore can be enriched via magnetic separation at 1556 gauss to obtain a heavy medium material with 4.93 g/cm3 density and 97.22 per cent magnetic recovery. Further tests were conducted to determine the optimum field strength for magnetic separation, friability and regeneration recovery.

In the five years since Great Central Mines Limited (GCM) commenced exploration in the Jundee and Bronzewing areas of Western Australia's Yandal greenstone belt, the Company has been transformed from a junior explorer into Australia's fourth largest gold producer with annual production of approximately 440 000 ounces and mineral resources of seven million ounces of gold.The growth in resources has been driven by a high quality geoscientific approach, supported by a substantial budget for drilling and strong management commitment. In 1997, the Company expects to spend US$30 million on exploration in the Yandal greenstone belt.

The active history of foreign investment in the mining industry has resulted in Australia emerging as a major world producer of a range of mineral commodities. The current contribution to the national economy represented by mineral production and export revenues would not have occurred without both capital and expertise provided by foreign investors in the past. The initial foreign investment has led to the formation of Australian majority owned and controlled multi-national mining groups such as BHP Limited, CRA Limited and MIM Holdings Limited. These Australian companies, and others, are playing a significant part as foreign investors in the mining industries of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and Indonesia. The study examines issues of importance in foreign investment in each of the countries. It concludes that in Indonesia, the nationalisation of the Dutch mining industry in 1957 did much to deter foreign investment. The remarkable degree of policy stability brought about by the Contract of Works system since 1967 has gone a long way to restoring that confidence. The level of investment in the Indonesian mining sector is steadily increasing. Its attraction to Australian investors is a combination of policy stability, favourable fiscal terms, geological prospectivity for a range of commodities and proximity to Asian markets to the north. PNG has a stable policy regime which until recently has been free from political interference at the administrative level. As such, investors were developing confidence in the system and investment was progressively increasing as evidenced by growing exploration expenditures up to 1988. The 1989 Bougainville revolution caused a re-assessment of PNG's investment and country risk. The recent Mt Kare incident has further raised concerns over the government's ability to guarantee internal security. Foreign investors are faced with weighing concerns with the risks of operation in PNG against the undoubted geological prospectivity of the country. The fiscal regimes of Australia, Indonesia and PNG were compared by means of a simulated open pit gold mine in each country. The effect of taxation is examined by reference to the relative change in project internal rates of return (IRR). The comparison of the relative differences between pre-tax and post-tax IRRs provides a measure of the relative attractiveness of each fiscal regime.

Traditionally, quality control of iron sinter has relied on time-consuming wet chemistry. However, the mineralogical composition that defines the physical properties, such as strength or reducibility, is not monitored.X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis in combination with Rietveld quantification and statistical data evaluation using partial least squares regression (PLSR) has been successfully trialled to determine the mineralogical composition and process parameters such as the FeO (Fe2+) content and basicity of iron sinter within an analysis time of less than eight minutes per sample. The results were compared with wet chemistry data.PLSR does not require pure phases, crystal structures or complex modelling of peak shapes. The analysis is therefore easy to set up and ideal if only one property needs to be analysed. PLSR results show an accuracy for the FeO content of ±0.3 per cent for the samples analysed in this case study.Both the PLSR and Rietveld methods take the full XRD pattern into account and can be simultaneously applied on the same measurement. PLSR was found to be the more robust method if only FeO and basicity results are required. The Rietveld method helps to predict other parameters, such as the compression strength of the sinter, by monitoring all existing phases (eg larnite C2S or silico-ferrite of calcium and aluminium phases).CITATION:König, U and Norberg, N, 2015. The mining industry needs to attract and recruit young talented people. An important task is, therefore, to create an attractive mining workplace that engages with, and motivates youngsters who are not particularly interested in working in the industry. This paper aims to illustrate a way forward for the mining industry to form healthy and safe workplaces honouring key components such as knowledge, skill, co-operation, continual development and acceptance of diversity. This is a way to create a vision of healthy and safe mining work. The mining industry must work towards zero vision; a future without accidents and hazardous environments. In this paper the authors discuss different aspects of an ‘attractive workplace’ and summarises lessons learnt in 26 statements dealing with safety, both physical and social work environments, and social responsibility. The authors hope these recommendations will provide some guidance for how attractive workplaces should be designed for future deep mining.The paper is based on lessons from two large European projects, a Swedish-Polish project: The Smart Mine of the Future; and a European Union project: Sustainable Intelligent Mining Systems (SIMS). Modern gold production from the Gympie Goldfield commenced in 1995 with the first production from the Monkland Mine. The primary ore target was the 2.5 m wide Inglewood Fault ore zone, which was initially mined using traditional narrow-vein shrink stoping. This manuallyintensive mining method allowed the mine to re-open with minimal capital cost, however the trade off was low productivity and high operating costs. As the mine has developed, access through 100-year-old, timber-lined, small shafts, and the high cost of delineating reserves, has restricted modernisation of the operations. In early-2000 a stockwork lode was discovered adjacent to the existing workings with an economic width of 40 m. In order to maximise the benefit of such an orebody, mining needed to be approached in a new way. This paper summarises the many changes implemented at the Monkland Mine, including the necessary cultural change, implementing long-hole stoping, de-bottlenecking and the application of mechanisation. The result has been a significant improvement in safety performance, higher productivity and a more secure future for all those involved in the project.
