The South American mining community leads the world in recognition and adoption of the latest grinding mill relining technologies. Clearly this region has recognised the benefits of improved relining performance as a defence against the Global Economic Crisis. Five of the six RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining Systems, ordered to date, are either operating or being manufactured for South American mine sites. The sixth is for Sino IronÆs Cape Preston Project in Western Australia. This paradigm shift, towards very short relining times, aims at displacing mill relining activities from the critical path of concentrator maintenance shutdown schedules. The first uses of the RUSSELL TWIN 8 Mill Relining System have seen some of the highest semi-autogenous grinding (SAG) mill new liner placement rates ever observed by Russell Mineral Equipment (RME), as would be expected with two, independent Machines working simultaneously in the one mill. The liner replacement rate, averaged over the whole reline is good (27 per cent improvement over single Machine System in the same mill) but short of full potential. This modest result can be attributed to reline crews unfamiliarity with RUSSELL TWIN 8 System operation. This paper compares a sample of conventional (single machine) RME Mill Relining System performance data with one ædouble headÆ mill liner handler by others. Early performance of EscondidaÆs new RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance is then compared with recent single machine data from Escondida, immediately prior to RUSSELL TWIN 8 commissioning. RME and Escondida look to constantly improving RUSSELL TWIN 8 System performance as full operational familiarity is achieved. The preparation of this paper revealed a need to develop a global industry standard for mill relining data collection. A web based platform to develop data collection templates is also discussed in Appendix 1.

Titaniferous magnetite deposits are a significant source of vanadium for use in high strength steel alloying and other chemical applications. The mineralogy of the deposits varies markedly and the ore characteristics strongly influence the process route selected and the metallurgical outcomes. Characterisation of the ores reveals the presence of magnetite, ilmenite and other minerals such as spinel hematite and goethite with variable degrees of weathering along with weathered products of host rock. The standard processing route is to crush, grind and magnetically recover a concentrate for salt roasting to produce a soluble vanadate. Ore beneficiation is practised to generate an iron based mineral concentrate containing much of the vanadium with low silica levels of two per cent. Typical processing problems encountered are fine liberation size, over grinding of the magnetite and variable response to magnetic separation resulting from the weathering profile. Beneficiation options are restricted, and generally focused on producing a combined iron and titanium rich concentrate containing vanadium due to the fact that ilmenite and magnetite and their products of weathering are magnetic and have similar specific gravities making their separation difficult. The ilmenite usually contains low levels of vanadium making its separation highly desirable from the iron mineralisation containing higher levels of vanadium. Salt roasting of vanadium ores followed by water leaching has been the standard processing route for many years. The cost of suitable sodium salts, availability of capital and increasing energy costs and energy availability are critical factors in determining the viability of aspiring vanadium producers. To date, only Windimurra has acquired full capital funding, secured energy and sodium salt supplies at suitable cost that enable the construction of the project. Low overall recoveries of vanadium to concentrate roasting at up to 1200¦C are critical cost issues. In this paper, factors influencing the recovery of vanadium are reviewed and emerging processing trends explored. The important features of the processing of titaniferous magnetites have been condensed from the literature, published works, company websites, our own work and personal communication.

The continued exploration of the major brown coal deposits of the Latrobe Valley has resulted not only in the discovery of huge additional reserves, but also in new concepts of the stratigraphy and structure of the coal seams in that area. The author sets out his interpretation of the new information which has become available over the last six years.A section of the paper is devoted to the quality of the coal. As the chemical composition of these brown coals has been discussed in some detail by previous authors, only the major constituents and the heat value of the coal are dealt with in this paper. Some of the variations in quality are related to the geological structure.The occurrence of underground water and its relation to open cuts is dealt with briefly.INTRODUCTIONThe Latrobe Valley Tertiary Basin is almost entirely covered by a layer of Post Tertiary sediments which mask the underlying rocks and their structures. As a result, the geological understanding of this area has had to await the comprehensive drilling campaign in search of brown coal, initiated by the Victorian Mines Department in 1917, and subsequently carried on by the State Electricity Commission of Victoria. The first detailed geology was published by Herman (1922), and this was followed some 25 years later by papers by Edwards, and later Thomas and Baragwanath, to which reference will be made later in this paper. Herman included a section on the geology of the Latrobe Valley in his book Brown Coal, which was published in 1952.Since that time a considerable amount of new information has become available from the continued drilling carried out by the Commission. In addition, geophysical work carried out by the Commonwealth Bureau of Mineral Resources has assisted in the defining of geological structures in the area.

The Mt Leyshon gold deposit produced in excess of three million ounces of gold and considerable silver over a period of approximately 130 years. Most of this production occurred between 1987 and 2001. Mining commenced in 1872, however it was highly likely that Chinese miners were not only removing alluvial gold from the area but were also mining very rich æreefÆ gold. Records for early alluvial and hard rock mining do not exist, however gold production was probably considerable. In the early 1980s Marathon Petroleum (Australia) Ltd (MPAL) joint ventured into the Mt Leyshon area which had been held as a mining lease by Noranda Australia Ltd since 1968. Noranda at that time was concentrating its exploration effort on the Balcooma base metal prospect areas to the north of Charters Towers. In early 1982 MPALs parent company was taken over by US Steel. This led to an opportunity for MPALs Australian management to purchase all tenements and licences (except for coal, oil and gas) which were duly purchased for $US 1 million. At this time MPAL had a remarkable array of gold tenements (many of which were subsequently mined by other companies) and Mt Leyshon was considered to be the highlight. Early æseedÆ capital ($A 3.1 million) was raised with backers being the Bank of America, the NSW Government Superannuation Scheme, Westpac, private individuals and a Queensland grocery chain by the name of æJack the SlasherÆ.

At present there exist few engineering calculations and principles to determine exclusion zones for personnel in the vicinity of underground explosive storage areas. This paper is written to encourage discussion and proposes a method to determine the impact of a blast wave through scientific principles. Then, criteria to determine an ‘exclusion zone’ need to be identified.There has been much work on identifying the pressure rise and the energy of explosive detonations underground but little to develop standards in criteria that can be used to identify exclusion zones for useful design of underground infrastructure. The author presents the newest ways of calculating the pressure rise and energy (impulse) of detonations and puts forward some criteria to be used in the identification of personnel exclusion zones to spark peer review and discussion of these criteria towards developing standards for engineering design.Smith and Sapko (2005) used Sach’s scaling laws to develop a relationship for both pressure rise and impulse, which incorporated factors for intersections. Intersections will have a large bearing on the peak pressure and the energy of the blast wave and needs to be incorporated. Silvestrini, Genova and Leon Trujillo (2009) developed the scaling laws with an energy concentration factor to predict blast propagation in partially confined geometries and together the author has proposed equations for determining the peak side pressure and the impulse in a tunnel. Given the weight and type of the explosive, the average cross-section of the tunnel complex and the number and type of intersections encountered, the pressure and impulse can be calculated.The military has carried out many investigations as to the influence of blast pressure and impulse on the human body. Lung damage, ear damage and velocity knock down are three of the criteria standards that are presented as possible methods of determining exclusion zones around an underground explosives magazine. The author suggests that the velocity curves presented by Bowen, Fletcher and Richmond (1968) could be an acceptable method of determining an exclusion zone as it incorporates the side pressure and the energy of a blast wave to determine the ability of the wave to knock down personnel.CITATION:Lovitt, M B, 2014. Pisolitic iron ores (also known as channel iron deposits) are an important resource of medium-grade iron ore in the Hamersley Province of Western Australia. They are a special case of transported pisolitic ferricrust, differing from normal transported ferricrust only in the exceptionally high iron and low alumina content. The pisoids typically range up to 5 mm in diameter with abundant particles of ferruginised fossil wood up to 15 mm in maximum diameter preserved in the sediment. Field observations indicate that pisoliths are commonly initiated by the action of raindrops on iron-rich soil. Pisolites form by the impact of raindrops forming coated beads of ferruginous soil, which after dehydration obtain additional coatings during successive showers. Thick deposits of pisolite that are transported and deposited primarily by sheetwash form in the distal regions of the pediment. A size range limited to particles that may be transported by extremely shallow water characterises the abundant fossil wood fragments. The absence of fine sedimentary layering in pisolitic iron ores is explained by the action of soil-forming processes after deposition, while the major coarse bedding features derive from successive erosional and depositional events in the evolution of the pediment. They are not deposited in channels by rivers which, in arid to semi-arid conditions, typically deposit quartz sands and gravels with characteristic point bars and current bedding, abundant ferruginous granules, but rarely pisoids. However, they may fill abandoned river channels.

In 2012, in response to an increasing potential unfunded liability, the Western Australian Government passed the Mining Rehabilitation Fund Act 2012. The intent of this Act was to introduce an annual levy on tenements covered under the Mining Act 1978 based on the area of disturbed land. The fund generated from these levies could then be used to rehabilitate mining sites where all other options to ensure rehabilitation had been exhausted. The fund could also be used to rehabilitate abandoned sites or features which, in Western Australia, number over 10 000.The Mining Rehabilitation Fund (MRF) was implemented on 1 July 2013 for an initial voluntary year. It becomes compulsory on 1 July 2014. By the end of March 2014, nine months into the voluntary period, over $6.5 million had been paid into the fund. The incentive for tenement holders to voluntarily enter the fund was the opportunity to have unconditional performance bonds held against their tenements retired. While there will be circumstances where bonds will continue to be applied, it is the State Government’s intention to retire most of the bonds.The MRF has received mostly accolades from industry and companies that have entered. Most have found the system easy to use. The MRF was also cited as a reason for Western Australia’s improved position in the Fraser Institute’s annual survey of mining jurisdictions. Work is now starting on processes to select priority abandoned mines for rehabilitation.This paper explains the background to the MRF and its development, and reviews its implementation during the first, voluntary, year. SITUATED in the county of Manchcster, in Northern Eyre's Peninsula, the Iron Knob ore-deposits form the basis of the industry. These deposits are connected by the Iron Knob tramway to the port of Whyalla, aal miles distant, on the western shore of Speneer Gulf,and to-day another tramway is under construction to link up with the same port, a second group of iron ore leases known as Iron Baron, which is situated 18 miles south of Iron Knob. Fig. 1 indicates the geographical relationship of these three places, Iron Knob, Iron Baron, and Whyalla, which together comprise this field of the company's activities.

The design and operating characteristics of the hydraulic cyclone elutriator were described in detail by Kelsall and McAdam (1963), and the method of operation of the commercially available version, the Cyclosizer, is described in the manufacturer's pamphlet (Anon). Complete details of the operating procedure are given in the relevant operating manual (Anon, 1964).The cyclones which form the basis of the Cyclosizer (Fig. 1) under normal operating conditions produce typical cut sizes of 44, 33, 23, 15, and 10 µm for cyclones one to five respectively for material with a specific gravity of 2·7. At the end of the selected elutriation period each sized fraction is discharged and collected for subsequent assay or analysis but all material rejected by the fifth cyclone (e.g. minus 10 \lm quartz) normally passes to waste. When this material is needed for separate study, although its amount and average analyses can be calculated by difference, it may be necessary to collect more than 250 I. of very dilute suspension, flocculate the solids, allow to settle, and decant off the supernatant liquid.This procedure is cumbersome and inconvenient and the simple technique to be described may offer some advantages. Much of western New South Wales is characterised by an extensive regolith formed during more than 60 million years of exposure, weathering and erosion. This cover includes intensely weathered in situ regolith and superimposed transported materials of variable thickness, commonly in complex palaeochannel systems. Mineral exploration in this region has been considerably hampered by the cover, which can complicate or maskgeochemical anomalies and also obscure geophysical signatures. A detailed multi-disciplinary study of part of this region, centred on the Cobar-Girilambone area has demonstrated a methodology for exploring through this regolith. The approach involves regolith-landform mapping to establish the main landscape and palaeolandscape elements and to determine the nature and spatial occurrence of different regolith materials. By combining knowledge of the surface distribution of different regolith-landform units with available 3D information on the regolith and geophysical data it is possible to construct simplified derivative maps or exploration ægoÆ maps, which can be used to advise appropriate exploration strategies or help interpret acquired exploration data. This study has also established the major regolith controls on geochemical dispersion and determined key background element associations. These regolith-related element associations can result in highly variable background levels for many trace elements and need to be understood and factored into the analysis of geochemical data for different regolith sampling media. With better knowledge of the regolith it is possible to select the most appropriate exploration techniques and sampling media for a given area, as well as apply appropriate normalisation procedures to the acquired data. Exploration success can be greatly improved by using many existing techniques in æregolith smartÆways.

The Northside Storage Tunnel is a TBM driven rock tunnel system designed to collect and store sewage from four major storm overflow points along the existing Northern Suburbs Ocean Outfall Sewer. At present, sewage overflows during wet weather are the main source of pollution for Sydney Harbour. The tunnel system comprises a 16 km long by 3.8 m to 6.5 m diameter tunnel from Lane Cove to the North Head Sewage Treatment Plant and a 4 km long by 6.3 m diameter branch tunnel from West Chatswood. The tunnel will have a typical rock cover of about 50 m to 150 m. Most of the tunnel alignment is contained within the Hawkesbury Sandstone Formation which is generally an excellent tunnelling stratum, and offers few geotechnical constraints. However, the tunnel is required to pass beneath incised palaeochannels at Middle Harbour and Manly with each palaeochannel containing about 70 m of sediment.Innovative geotechnical and geophysical investigations were undertaken to examine the tunnel route and characterise the rock beneath the palaeochannels. These investigations have located zones of poor quality rock beneath one palaeochannel in particular, suggesting significant stress relief had taken place in the rock at times of lower sealevel producing structural features indicative of valley bulging. This paper presents the geotechnical model developed for the tunnel, and the models and constraints for tunnelling beneath the palaeochannels.

QNI Pty Ltd operates the Yabulu Refinery located 25 kilometres north of Townsville, North Queensland. The plant treats nickel laterite ores sourced from the Philippines, Indonesia and New Caledonia. The cobalt head grade and overall recovery expectations for the 2001/2002 financial year are 0.161 per cent and 53.8 per cent respectively. Cobalt is a valuable byproduct derived from the nickel refining operation which utilises the Caron Process. Any increases in cobalt recovery that are achieved from the existing relatively low level provide significant improvements to the bottom line of the operation. Towards the end of 2000, a project was undertaken to characterise cobalt losses with the sole purpose of improving cobalt recoveries using a variety of analysis techniques. The Time-of- Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry (TOF-SIMS û University of South Australia) method was used to verify the presence of surface bearing cobalt species, originating from either co-precipitation or adsorption mechanisms. Cross-section examinations were also performed using Scanning Electron Micrscopy (SEM) and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectrometry (EDXS). These techniques indicated the presence of high cobalt concentrations (in the order of several per cent) within a select number of roasted and leached ore particles. The phenomenon of cobalt losses due to incomplete leaching within specific ore particles was not widely documented within the Refinery prior to these studies. In order to quantify losses via this mechanism, Mineral Liberation Analysis (MLA û JKTech Centre) was also performed on key samples. This paper serves to document a systematic approach in determining the source of significant valuable mineral losses in an established, operating plant. It discusses the use of a variety of analytical techniques, which have been adapted for the minerals processing industry, but are strongly relevant for plant investigations in the hydrometallurgical industry.

Increasing bed depth is one of the main options sinter plants consider to increase production, since it is an incremental improvement and less expensive compared with a new plant. To maximise the benefits of increased bed depth, correct blend design and plant operation is critical. This paper discusses test work conducted to show the effects of ore type and bed depth on sintering performance and the adjustments required in both fuel rate and lime addition depending on ore type. The differences in sinter plug macro and microstructure were also examined to show the effect of bed depth on ore assimilation and matrix formation. Finally, the benefits of blending ores to achieve the best sintering performance as bed depth increases is discussed.

The Angas Zinc Mine (Angas) is a poly-metallic, underground mine in the Adelaide Hills that has been developed through arguably one of the most volatile financial time periods in living memory. From boom times during the commencement of the project, the global financial crisis (GFC) through the stabilisation of the operating period and then a subdued capital market for the period where mine life extension was targeted, the financial environment has always presented a different set of challenges. Indeed even the Underground Operators’ Conferences that have been held across the span of the project allude to these changes: ‘Boom and Beyond’, Launceston (2008); ‘Safe, Innovative and Sustainable’, Canberra (2011) and ‘Managing the Margin’ in Adelaide (2014).Angas gives a rare opportunity to see the entire life-of-mine of a project and its economic performance within a relatively short time frame. Angas, owned and operated by Terramin Australia Ltd (Terramin), will have undergone resource estimation drill out, feasibility study, permitting, commissioning, operating and completion and rehabilitation all within a period of approximately ten years. A number of sensitivities of the project were tested, particularly in the bankable feasibility study (BFS) stage and the aim of this paper is to identify the factors that impacted the operations profitability the most, whether they were identified preproduction or not. The key sensitivities assessed in the BFS were typical of similar studies, including operating costs, metal recoveries, capital costs, zinc prices, lead prices and exchange rates. The manner in which these sensitivities presented themselves in real life were not as anticipated and modelled in the feasibility study and were also heavily impacted by technical challenges.CITATION:Harris, A, Laughton, K and Ranford, J, 2014. The Bong Mieu Project lies within the Pre-Palaeozoic Kontum Craton near the southern margin of the regional Phuoc Son û Tam Ky Suture. The Suture and accompanying Truongson Fold Belt of Indosinian age host significant gold and base-metal bearing districts including OlympusÆ other project at Phuoc Son to the west of Bong Mieu and OxianaÆs Sepon project in Laos. The Bong Mieu Project is located some 90 km south of Da Nang and some 30 km south-west of Tam Ky, the provincial capital of Quang Nam province in central Vietnam. The project area is covered by an Investment Licence of some 30 km2 which was granted in 1991 and a mining permit of some 365 ha granted in 1992. Several mesothermal, gold-silver deposits with assigned resources are present on the property. Deposits with assigned resources contain some 615 000 ounces of gold in situ. These are at Ho Gan and Ho Ray which are potentially exploitable by open-pit mining and Nui Kem which is potentially exploitable by underground mining. Newly discovered extensions to the known deposits at Ho Gan, Ho Ray and Nui Kem, and several other new prospects, are currently being investigated by drilling. The Ho Gan mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein, as well as intrusive breccia hosted style. Nui Kem mineralisation is of mesothermal, shear and shear breccia quartz vein style. The Ho Ray mineralisation is of skarn (gold-bismuth-tungsten) and lesser quartz vein style. The deposits straddle and flank the east-west trending Bong Mieu Anticline which trends through the central portion of the Investment Licence. In this paper the geology of the deposits, details of resources, results of recent exploration on the Investment Licence and recent engineering and mining studies at Ho Gan are briefly reviewed.

Minerals and Metals Group (MMG) Century mine (Century) is a large open-cut mine in northwest Queensland approximately 2.5 km long, 1.5 km wide and 240 m deep, with an ultimate pit depth of 320 m. In 2009, the mine experienced three failures which began as small failures, and progressively developed into significant multi-batter failures. The incidents were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and practical management to achieve positive outcomes for the mine. On the south wall of the mine, a series of batter-scale wedge failures occurred in December 2007. Analysis of structure orientations and design changes aimed to minimise the risk of failure extending over multiple batters, while accepting a risk of further small-scale failures. Design changes were constrained by a culturally sensitive area (CSA) located south of the wall. As mining progressed, shallow wedge failures developed over multiple batters and cracks were observed 60m back from the pit crest, indicating that a large-scale wedge failure was developing. Movement increased in January 2009 as a result of significant rainfall. After considering several design options, the area was stabilised by a cut-back of the wall. Two multi-batter failures also occurred on the north wall as mining progressed through a structurally complex area. Both north wall failures began as small failures that progressively developed, and required a redesign of the wall below as well as practical management of safety aspects. The complex structural geology was difficult to predict ahead of mining, and required geotechnical input into design changes as mining progressed. All three failures potentially had significant impact for ore recovery, and were managed by a combination of analysis, redesign and operational management have resulted to achieve positive outcomes in a challenging mining environment.
