In practice a sampling solution is a compromise of many requirements: the sample should be representative; the sampling system should also be reliable, less than 95 per cent availability restricts the use of the assayed sample for process control purposes; no sample is the worst sample, and investment costs and installation space/layout are frequently a restriction. For instance, online X-ray analysers for process control introduce a delimitation error by the nature of X-ray physics. Thus only in special cases a relative accuracy better than three per cent relative, as one standard deviation, is achieved. A sampling system for process control needs not to be, as representative, for so many sample properties, as one for composite laboratory analysis samples. Sampling system maintenance is also an important issue. There are many sampling systems in the industry which have been difficult to maintain and are in disuse for lack of resources or incentives to keep them running. Pierre Gy developed the most generally accepted sampling theory. One of the main principles is that all particles in a one-dimensional process stream should have equal chances of being included into the sample. A correctly designed and operated transversing cutter comes close to this goal but has limitations in temporal representativity. For slurries an acceptable solution in many cases is to use a fixed vertical cutter(s) in a position where the slurry is well-mixed by turbulence and other means. For online analysis, reliability problems are mostly related to faulty design or installation of the piping system to the analyser. Properties of material processed, process flow sheet and piping details before and after the sampler have to be taken into account when deciding on which sampling arrangement is appropriate. Guidelines and some solutions to these issues are presented in this paper.

Dr. Willett. I will start by answering one or two general points which have been posed. The first point is a question of liability of a seam to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are very liable to spontaneous combustion. Some seams are not liable at all except in most abnormal circumstances, and some seams have a liability somewhere between these two extremes. Dr. J. S. Haldane made the comment some 50 years or so ago that if you try hard enough you can make any coal seam in the world fire spontaneously. Many heatings have in fact occurred because the coal has been allowed to be ground up into a fine state and there has been air leakage through it for many years. This has resulted in spontaneous combustion which would not have occurred in some seams unless conditions had been very abnormal indeed. One comment I heard while listening to the discussions of one team was the importance of encouraging morale and the team seemed to go to the extent of suggesting that this was more important than the actual technical action taken. Though I agree that everything possible should be done to encourage morale, it must be in conjunction with the correct technical method of dealing with the Emergency.

Tailings storage facilities often represent a mining operation’s most significant liability, posing serious environmental, social and safety risks. Almost all mining operations dispose of wet tailings (Valenta et al, 2023), which represents a risk of failure due to the potential for a rapid strength reduction of the unconsolidated materials leading to static liquefaction and subsequent dam wall failure. As a waste stream, tailings disposal, decommissioning and relinquishment aim to be inexpensive processes, ruling out many highly engineered solutions. Advantageously, tailings consolidation does not need to be immediate, opening the door for relatively passive, inexpensive consolidation methods that aim to gradually increase the strength of tailings over extended periods (ie years). In this paper, we present the prospect of novel in situ tailings stabilisation, learning from studies that have investigated the most erosion-resistant landforms on Earth.

IGO Ltd’s (IGO’s) Nova Operation (Nova), which is 160 km east-north-east of the town of Norseman in Western Australia (WA), mines and processes nickel-copper-cobalt (Ni-Cu-Co) sulfide ore from the magmatic Nova-Bollinger Deposit (Nova-Bollinger), which is hosted by the Mesoproterozoic age high-grade metamorphic rocks of the Albany Fraser Orogen. Over its 56-month life-of-mine (LOM) operations to 31 December 2020, Nova has processed 5.63 Mt of ore grading 2.04 per cent Ni, 0.86 per cent Cu and 0.07 per cent Co from its underground mine. At the end of 2020, both the Nova-Bollinger JORC Code reportable Mineral Resource estimate (MRE) and Ore Reserve estimate (ORE) were >90 per cent classified in the highest JORC Code confidence categories of Measured Mineral Resource and Proved Ore Reserve respectively. The high JORC Code classification confidences assigned to the Nova-Bollinger MRE and ORE results from the 386 km of surface and underground diamond drill testing of the deposit to a nominal 12.5 by 12.5 m pierce point spacing in mineralisation. The close spaced high-quality drilling and bulk mining method employed at Nova has effectively removed the need for any grade control modelling outside of the MRE process. Importantly, having only the one fully drilled out deposit being mined and only the one process plant, Nova’s reconciliation process is in the fortunate situation of not being confounded by issues such as external ore sources and constant updates as new grade control information becomes available. IGO’s Nova reconciliation processes are focused on reconciliation ratios that quantify operational period differences between the MRE and ORE head grade and tonnage forecasts and the process plant head actuals. These metrics have been used to identify key reconciliation issues and have initiated several studies into the causes for specific reconciliation results, which are discussed in the paper. In late 2020, a period of sustained poor reconciliation results led to the recognition that increasing the understanding of risk between the MRE and ORE should be investigated. To assist with modelling stope level risk within the mine plan and subsequent reconciliation, an attempt was made to develop a formula to quantify ‘stope risk’ from MRE metrics such as sample spacing, kriging efficiency and so on

Although much talked about, social licence to operate (SLTO) is a relatively new concept that has been deemed as one of the four biggest business risks to a mining project over the life-of-mine. There is no accepted single definition of SLTO and this author understands SLTO to be stakeholder perception of the legitimacy of a project, a company or an industry. At a specific site, and across different sites within the same organisation, SLTO ranges through different levels according to stakeholders’ degrees of acceptance in time and space. Management of SLTO is vital for the mining sector but is difficult as it is informal and intangible. Although there are no key performance indicators, there are certain indicators that enable relative measurement of the ‘level’ of the SLTO. Because of the importance of the SLTO, information management during the entire life-of-mine, from exploration to rehabilitation, becomes crucial for the continued operation of a project. Every mine will close! Charting a profitable course through mine operations to acceptable mine completion requires that risk and opportunity management planning of the mine life begin as early as possible in the life cycle. Management targets and metrics are required to identify and navigate the course to successful mine completion based on economic, social and environmental criteria. This paper outlines the application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ principles to the life cycle of a mine site. In general, metrics are required to make key strategic ideas apparent, transforming those ideas into a manageable set of quantitative measures that guide communication and decision making. For example, the chemical industry has established metrics that focus on the life cycle impacts of its products and eco-efficiency of their processes. Other industry sectors have focused attention on workplace and community well-being outcomes. These management metrics are necessarily organisation-specific, aligned to stakeholdersÆ expectations and the strategic outcomes sought, as well as the cause-and-effect relationships underlying key issues. Recently, the Global Environmental Management Initiative (GEMI), a consortium of multi-national companies, developed The Metrics NavigatorÖ. The guidance document provides a structured process for assessing and developing metrics for key environmental, social, and economic issues based on business and stakeholder perspectives. It incorporates best practices learned from the chemical and other industry sectors and has since been applied to develop metrics that guide life cycle strategies. The paper examines how the life cycle of a mine site could benefit from experiences in other industry sectors where sustainability metrics have guided strategy. It considers the potential application of The Metrics NavigatorÖ process to the life cycle of a hypothetical Australian mine site using the processes that have been successful in other industry sectors.

EGAT Mae Moh Lignite Mine in Thailand produces about 16 Mt of lignite annually from open-cut mining. The coal is used to generate 2400 MW of electricity. In the near future, however, the coal must be extracted from underground at 400 - 500 m deep from the surface. The problem is the thickness of the coal seams. There are two coal seams that are about 25 m thick with 20 - 25 m of interburden between them.In order to investigate thick seam mining systems and propose a new mining system in ultra-thick coal seams in Thailand, a joint research group was established by Japanese and Thai researchers and mining engineers in early 2009. This paper describes conventional underground mining systems and underground coal gasification for thick coal seams and discusses the applicable coal mining systems to this mine. Then, this paper proposes an innovative underground coal mining system for thick coal seam, ‘eco-friendly underground coal mining system which consists of the utilisation of flyash and CO2 storage’.

Mining is an international business and vital contributor to national and global economies. It depends on the trust and confidence of investors and stakeholders for its financial and operational well-being (Committee for Mineral Reserves International Reporting Standards (CRIRSCO), 2016). The Social Licence to Operate (SLTO) is an increasingly multifaceted and multistakeholder risk that can impact investment decisions. Community challenges to broader political and economic decisions have given rise to protest delaying or stopping projects or closing mines and has led to loss of life (Ernst and Young, 2016). Some governments are now giving greater powers to stakeholders to make the final decision on approving mining and metals activities (EY, 2016). With billions of dollars in project investment at stake, ongoing engagement, collaboration and effective communication with stakeholders is crucial and mutually beneficial solutions are increasingly expected (EY, 2016). It is therefore essential that the industry communicates the risks (and opportunities) associated with investment effectively and transparently in order to earn the necessary level of trust with investors and stakeholders to underpin its activities (CRIRSCO, 2016). In 2015, MMG Limited commenced further action to improve operating margins and establish a blueprint for future growth in the Australian environment. This action was taken in the context of weakening metal prices and high input costs that arose during the Australian minerals boom.MMG was formed in June 2009 following the purchase of the majority of assets of OZ Minerals Limited by China Minmetals Corporation (CMC) through its subsidiary China Minmetals Non-ferrous Metals Co Ltd (CMN).Since formation MMG has been implementing a business model to deliver a standard way of operating. The overarching purpose of the business model is to enable fast integration of acquired assets to realise improved productivity and performance. CMN established MMG as a vehicle to reach their growth targets through further development or acquisition of mineral assets in jurisdictions external to mainland China.The business model is underpinned by the MMG operating model. The operating model defines how MMG is arranged to deliver the company strategy.This paper describes the application of the operating model to the formation of the Australian operations into a single business unit from multiple stand-alone operating sites. The development and impact of the business model on MMG’s performance is also presented.The extension of the operating model to the Australian operations has led to improvement in safety performance, direct costs and productivity. These improvements have been achieved through reducing duplication, simplification of systems and rapid deployment of improvement initiatives.The successful implementation of the operating model to Australian operations strengthens the platform for further growth. Pbo activities have been measured in conventional blast furnace and direct smelting type slags at 1200¦C. Much higher activity coefficients than previously measured have been obtained and attributed to interactions between iron and lead oxides. The behaviour of PbO in the two types of slag reflects their relative silica contents. Simple equations derived from mathematical modelling work are presented for the prediction of Pbo activities in complex industrial slags.

In the search for significant new economic base-metal resources within Australia during the early 1970s BHP's Exploration Department had observed that the majority of lead and zinc con- centrate production in Europe and the USA came from carbonate- hosted Mississippi-Valley-type (MVT) zinc-lead deposits, but Aus- tralia had no history of production from this class of deposit despite several very favourable geological environments, par- ticularly in the large Palaeozoic sedimentary basins. An exploration-research team was established in 1975 and the Lennard Shelf region, near Fitzroy Crossing, was selected as a most promising geological environment. Previous exploration for this class of deposit by other companies in Australia had largely used conventional exploration philosophies (geological mapping, geophysics and geochemistry to identify specific drill targets) but BHP sought specialist advice from a North American expert and adopted a grid-drilling philosophy, which involved wide spaced relatively deep diamond drill holes on a regular grid pattern, and statistical evaluation of the results. This technique resulted in the discovery of the Blendevale Deposit in 1978 in an area which had previously been explored by other companies using conventional methodologies. The deposit was delineated and a pre-feasibility study carried out in 1985 indicated that the resource of 20 Mt @ 8.3% Zn, 2.5% Pb was a marginal proposition.

In the Renison Bell area of western Tas mania, a series of Lower Cambrian quartzites, shales, carbonate beds ("dolomites"), cong- lomerates, tuffs and argillites have been folded into a broad monocline whose general strike is NW-SE, plunging slightly north and dipping NE. The downwarped eastern side of the monocline is disrupted by a steep (50-800) east dipping normal fault, known as the Bassett Structure, whose throw is in excess of 500 m. A series of flat north dipping normal faults, each with a throw of approximately 50 m, further disrupts the sequence. All major faulting was pre-mineralization. A cassiterite- bearing Devonian quartz porphyry body intrudes this Cambrian sequence 2 km south of the currently operating mine. Of economic importance is the presence of three carbonate beds in the sequence. These carbonates consist of a mixture of calcite, dolomite and siderite. The No. 1 (youngest) and No. 2 carbonate beds are each approximately 15 m thick and are separated by 20 m of hematitic conglomerates and tuffs. The No. 3 (oldest) carbonate bed is approximately 5 m thick and is separated from the No. 2 horizon by 50 m of dark grey, finely laminated shales and quart- zites. Whilst the carbonates are remarkably persistent over at least 30 km2, facies changes are common and as a result of these changes, the carbonates vary considerably in

Fosterville Gold Mine is an underground operation located approximately 20 km northeast of Bendigo and 170 km north of Melbourne. Fosterville is the most productive gold mine in Victoria, producing over 100 000 ounces of gold annually. Access to the underground is via two portals cut into previously mined open pits. Fosterville is 100 per cent owned and operated by Northgate Minerals, a gold and copper producer with mining operations, development projects and exploration properties in Canada and Australia. (Northgate Minerals Corporation, 2010).Underground operations commenced in 2006 with ore production focused on three orebodies – Phoenix, Ellesmere and Falcon. Primary ventilation to the existing operation is provided by wall mounted exhaust fans located underground. This system provides approximately 220 m3/s of primary ventilation to the operations with intake achieved through the portals. Exploration drilling during recent times has uncovered another lode, the Harrier orebody, located 2.2 km to the south of the existing workings. Due to the location of the new Harrier orebody, vent analysis revealed the requirement for a separate source of primary ventilation to service Harrier. Figure 1 shows a current underground long section and the location of Harrier in relation to the existing workings. A number of options were considered, including a parallel decline from one of the existing two portals, however, a 4 m diameter, 350 m deep surface ventilation shaft was selected as the most suitable and feasible option for the mine.In December 2009, geotechnical drilling commenced to determine the most suitable location for the shaft. Site locations were constrained by a number of factors including interaction with current and planned surface infrastructure as well as proximity to nearby community members at the southern end of the mining lease. Results from the geotechnical drilling indicated that the majority of the proposed shaft would be suitable for a 4 m raise bored shaft. However, the top 40 m of the proposed shaft were deemed unsuitable for raiseboring due to zones of weakness that would likely influence the stability of a 4 m diameter shaft (Robinson, 2010). Following independent geotechnical advice and input from experienced raiseboring contractors, it was decided to construct a 40 m presink prior to raiseboring activities.A crane mounted auger was chosen as the preferred method to construct the presink. This method differs substantially from traditional blind sinking methods which are highly labour intensive. The auger, or drill, is designed and built to be attached to a crane base using engineered pivoting cradles. The auger is suspended from the crane jib by pennant ropes attached to hydraulic rams. The auger applies rotation and axial loads to the drilling tools via a telescopic steel bar (Kelly Bar). Drill tools are attached to the bottom of the Kelly Bar and comprise an assortment of drilling buckets and reaming barrels. Drilling buckets cut in situ material and collect the spoil for removal and are used for the excavation of the ‘pilot hole’. Reaming barrels are used to expand the diameter of the excavation by directing cuttings into the pilot hole which are then removed by the drilling bucket. In June 2010, the presink was constructed utilising a crane mounted auger with support to the shaft walls applied via a remote fibrecrete unit. The excavation method involved cutting a series of smaller diameter holes (2.4 m wide) before reaming out to the final diameter (4.7 m wide) in 4 - 5 m vertical increments. Fibrecreting activities were carried out on the backshifts, to ensure the stability of the excavation and minimise interaction between the two units. The presink was completed on time and offered many advantages compared to traditional blind sinking methods, including safety, costs and timing. This paper will examine the benefits of this method as well as lessons learnt and future applications in the mining industry.

As long as the tendency of Chilean copper ores continues to feature high levels of impurities, the smelters will tend to produce high-impurity mattes. The most notable impurities include As, Sb, Pb and Zn. Producing high-quality copper with such materials is a major challenge to metallurgical engineers and operators. More investigations into process optimisations and/or alternatives are needed, using both theoretical knowledge and operational skill. Converting of matte in Chile depends on the matte grade using established technologies. Mattes up to 66 per cent Cu, such as those from Outokumpu Flash furnaces, are converted in two stages, while typical Teniente Converter mattes, ranging from 70 - 74 per cent Cu are converted in one blow, directly to copper. In this paper thermodynamic data are used to evaluate possible variations in the use of traditional technologies applied to smelt copper concentrates with high impurity levels. The results of this analysis help to predict the impurity distributions between matte-slag-gas during the slag blow, and between copper-slag-gas during the copper blow. For converting high-impurity white metal, the effectiveness of volatilisation in the slag blow is analysed. In the copper blow, the type and the amount of flux (SiO2, CaO and others) are altered with the aim of optimising impurity distribution to the slag and gas.

The process selection and design aspects to treat primary ore in a new carbon-in-pulp (C.I.P.) plant while utilizing, where possible, existing equipment and infra- structure are discussed. The existing crushing plant, water supply, reagents, laboratory and infrastructure facilities from the heap leach have been upgraded and expanded to meet the C.I.P. plant requirements. The new power supply is from the North Queensland grid system. A series of metallurgical tests was carried out and a review of the data showed that the primary ore was amenable to conventional cyanide leaching. Following feasibility studies, a new process plant which included grinding mills, leaching, and adsorption tanks, thickener, desorption and gold roam facilities was constructed.

With more than 50 000 recorded abandoned mines in Australia, effective management strategies are needed to prioritise and manage health, safety, environmental and socio-economic risks and opportunities. This paper reviews international leading practices for abandoned mine management and identifies key issues that need to be addressed in the Australian context. As well as the academic literature, this review draws on a 2008 global legacy site survey and forum in 2008, a Churchill Fellowship study of abandoned mines and the recently released æStrategic Framework for Management of Abandoned Mines in the Minerals IndustryÆ (MCMPR/MCA, 2010).A conceptual model was developed to identify the relationship between key issues affecting the management of abandoned mines in Australia. The conceptual model is then used in the development of a maturity chart which draws on risk management principles to provide leading practice guidance for abandoned mine managers, jurisdictions and stakeholders. The control of phosphorus in steelmaking is one of the famous challenges of pyrometallurgy. It is well established that highly basic slags, the presence of FeO in the slag and lower temperatures (less than 1650°C) are favourable for phosphorous removal. The thermodynamics of this reaction have been extensively studied under laboratory conditions and the general trends confirmed through industrial trials. However, in general, phosphorus slag/metal distributions measured in industry are far from equilibrium and quite specific to the oxygen steelmaking technology being used. This variability was quantified by Urban, Weinberg and Cappel (2015), who found that the phosphorus partition ratio measured in plants varied with blowing practice, stirring intensity and even converter life. Some recent kinetic studies by Gu, Dogan and Coley (2017) have shown how the kinetics of these reactions vary with FeO content and dissolved sulfur at the droplet scale. A global kinetic model by Rout et al (2018) provides meaningful predictions of where dephosphorisation occurs in an industrial basic oxygen furnace (BOF) and some recent heat transfer modelling by Madhavan et al (2021, 2022) implies that temperature difference between droplets and slag has a role to play in explaining why equilibrium is not achieved. This paper will review the current state of knowledge and provide suggestions on predicting phosphorous removal for industrial operations and how greater removal could be achieved.

As a material asset for mining entities, the resources and reserves (RR) estimation processes are surprisingly underrepresented in the assurance landscape. When press reports expose them being inaccurately reported, or in merger and acquisitions processes, their importance becomes clear. The impact of erroneous RR numbers (both positive and negative) could have a material impact on an entity’s reputation and value.The technical nature and ‘black magic’ connotations of the RR estimation processes are possibly reasons why audit committees are not actively involved with it. Internal auditors avoid the RR processes for similar reasons. Also the traditional approach to obtain assurance on RR is expensive and is therefore only performed when it is absolutely required.However, stakeholders’ expectations of good governance are growing. Part of this increased focus is based on attaining a higher degree of certainty about the current and forecasted position of the entity. Stakeholders are also increasingly more interested in non-financial areas of entities, as the future success of an entity is more than a set of financial metrics.Consequently, the RR estimation processes should be visible on the agendas of audit committees. Monitoring of key controls is required as part of the governance obligations for senior management and the audit committee. So once it is on the audit committee’s agenda, the question then becomes, how will that agenda be supported by an assurance process that is cost-effective?The main objective of the paper is to describe a model of RR assurance that has been effectively applied in some mining companies. The paper discusses one particular approach that provides an audit committee with the required assurance regarding RR processes. The approach ties the assurance needs of the audit committee to the needs of the technical experts in the entity, therefore involving two important figures. It also offers assurance providers with a model to audit ‘through’ the RR processes rather than ‘around’ them. The paper then discusses top-down and bottom-up approaches that provide assurance at different levels of an entity.A governance audit that focuses on the RR processes is suggested as a top-down approach. A bottom-up approach assesses the design adequacy of internal control processes. A hybrid model is described which meets the needs of diverse stakeholders including the audit committee and the RR community.The hybrid model combines the expertise of professionals in both internal audit and RR. The right balance of these skills directed by a singular approach ensures that a credible result is achieved.This approach is not as expensive as some verification approaches used in the industry and can, as a result, be performed on a more regular basis.The last element of the paper looks at implementation of the reporting mechanism. Barrick (Australia Pacific) Limited initiated a trial of Caterpillar’s Minegem autonomous loader technology in 2009 at the Kanowna Belle mine in Kalgoorlie. Autonomous loader technology offers the potential to improve loader productivity, reduce operating costs and improve safety through removing personnel from the mine operating environment. This paper discusses the implementation of the technology at the mine site, the data collected during the trial and quantifies the benefits of using automated loader technology in comparison with teleremote loader operation. The lessons learned from the trial and work planned for the future in respect of this technology is also discussed.
